If a relay doesn't accept posts from random pubkeys (usually for spam prevention purposes).... how could gossip test that it would work well as an inbox? I can't create new events signed by your friends. Best I can do is make up a random keypair which will get rejected. Basically I think inbox suitability cannot be tested on such relays. Gossip will give such relays an X for inbox usage because I have no way to otherwise know, but the (OK, false, msg) message will be available as a hover-popup to users so that relays have a chance to explain themselves.
I do that with different Unix accounts. But you could just use GOSSIP_PROFILE or GOSSIP_DIR to point to a different data dir or profile name. Env cars.

Twitter claim that russia detected four Israeli F-35s approaching Persian Gulf.
US Navy E-2D Advanced Hawkeye South of Oman turned off it's transponder.
Reports a second one in Iraq also turned off it's transponder.
This might be Israel striking Iran.
I'm just verifying that I saw the blip on flightradar and then flightradar couldn't find the blip anymore. I don't know if they turned off their transponder, crashed, landed on an aircraft carrier, etc.. I'm just reporting on the news.
Could have been this: "IDF F-35 stealth fighter jets of the Israeli Air Force conducted an airstrike against headquarters of the IRGC backed Hashd Al-Shaabi militias in Kalso garrison, Iraq, two hours ago"
I don't know shit about this situation, but what comes to my mind is the looting risk. Disasters draw looters like flies. So I suppose FEMA is stopping private people from coming in to offer assistance on the presumption that they are looters.
keto update: start of day 4, -1.7 kg, still not in ketosis
Most of the weight loss will have been glycogen and water so far. I'm probably still eating too much protein and getting sugar via gluconeogenesis.
I just got back from the Free Speech Union town hall meeting where I passed out nostr flyers.
These people have barely even heard of a computer and they can barely walk. I'd say they were grey hairs but for many of them that would mean literally 2 grey hairs left.
Are the only people in NZ that care about free speech the 90 year old geezers?
I probably shouldn't announce things before I've finished writing them but i'm pretty excited about this.
Gossip will soon have an embedded mini relay tester that will tell you if a relay is suitable for outbox, private inbox, public inbox, or DM usage.
I think the proliferation of many different kinds of relays for many different purposes has made the situation for end users very difficult, and this is going to help a lot... it is better than trusting a relay to tell you what it does. It will work for paid relays too (once you have paid) as it uses your keypair to test.
It will just be a manual test that only happens when you choose a relay to test and press the test button. I'm not even sure I should bother persisting the results beyond a restart, or even preventing double-click from testing twice.
So yes you could imagine better more automatic things, but this should save people 98% of the time they currently have to spend researching which relays are appropriate for which purposes. Test... ah there is one. Switch! Next relay, test... nope... next relay... You could work things out in under a minute now.
Right now people just pick relays kinda randomly. A lot of the time they pick relays that are very specialized and just don't work for normal nostr things.
This "test" button will tell you if a relay works, so you only pick relays that work instead of picking broken or specialized relays by accident.
And what are you drinking?
You can use one relay to do all the things if you wanted to.
I'm just trying to avoid mismatches.
As for automating relay selection, fiatjaf is against hiding relays from users and he makes some good arguments. So I'll leave it manual for now.
Israel threatens to strike Iran's oil assets.
Iran threatens to destroy oil assets in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in response.
I'm thinking "NO! Iran, don't make an enemy of Saudi Arabia! They might come to your side, but not if you blow up their oil!"
Then Saudi Arabia meets with Iran wanting to "permanently close the chapter on their differences"
Whew.
I've been using Coracle so I hadn't noticed. I didn't change anything with following lists recently that I can recall.
Perhaps Amethyst changed to NIP-44 encryption for the content and forget to support decrypting from both? Just a wild guess. Vitor should know more.
Yes she does. Her diet is mostly raw meat with the bones. Chicken and lamb, kangaroo based kibble (smells like cereal more than kangaroo), rotten dead rabbits she finds, freshly shot rabbits, possums from time to time, sheep shit (her choice not mine) and the occasional long blades of grass, dried duck snacks, peanut butter, and tiny bits of (toxic in high quantity) chocolate, maybe a few almonds, cottage cheese from the bottom of the container, yogurt from the bottom of the container.
Yes the United States is targetted by Israel. This is why so many people in the United States are pro-Israel. They spend massive amounts of money to keep America on their side, and I believe also probably have blackmail on a bunch of people (there is no way congress is entirely pro-Israel, somebody is surely being blackmailed).
But interestingly, most other countries are not being targetted by Israel. You will see a very different perspective from the US/Israel perspective in many other countries. And the UN walkout when Bibi did his speech kinda shows how most of the world sees things very differently... those countries where Israel didn't spend the time and money to deceive.
Thanks to @Catomizer gossip 0.12.0 now has a flatpak build.

These maps show that, according to your theory, Russia is trying to steal coal and metals, but not natural gas or oil. Interesting.
Can you explain why are they fighting down near the lower Dnipro river where there are no resources?
I keep your theory in a superposition of possibilities, but it's not a strong one in my book. Russia has MASSIVE mineral resources that are untapped... the limiting factor is people and infrastructure, not underground resources. There is no logic to getting more resources when they can't harvest all the resources they already have. OTOH if these resource dots already have infrastructure pulling out resource that would be different but I don't tihnk WaPo used such dots.
I think Russia wants to maintain it's Naval presence at Sevastopol and to never be cut off from it (via Kerch bridge attacks) and so they wanted a "land bridge" all along the north from Rostov-on-Don across and right down E105 to always have access to their critical naval port. I don't think they want to capture any more of Ukraine but are taking it because it strengthens their negotiating position.
None of this means Ukraine shouldn't be fighting them back. If I were Ukraine I'd be doing everything I could to fight them back. But I'd also prioritize what matters most and understand what matters most to my enemy so that some kind of settlement could be made, and try to move the situation towards a peace.
You also argue that "killing people is a part of self-defense." Turn that around. Perhaps (another theory) Russia killed people in Eastern Ukraine for self defense. We have even NY Times articles that the US was installing military right along the Russian border including CIA bases. I think this possibility is strong.
I wouldn't be wed to just one explanation too tightly, and most things are decided based on multiple reasons.
There is so much censorship on X now that it is not even worth going there. You aren't getting a balanced view there anymore. They take posts down almost as fast as they go up. Elon Musk has failed.

I'm sorry but I have to point out how 1984 doublespeak this situation is right now
as Israel pounds civilian areas in Lebanon https://x.com/ALJADEEDNEWS/status/1841288430858145804 with no regard for civilian life, claiming they were all "human shields"
and as Iran launches precise strikes with small explosions on military targets https://x.com/WarMonitors/status/1841170806187180212
CNN complains that Mossad HQ is surrounded by civilians https://x.com/SarkastikB/status/1841168009177468992
... why doesn't he say that Israel is using civilians as human shields to protect Mossad HQ?
It is pure fucking willful blindness and hypocracy, wildly obvious and insane to the degree that I cannot for the life of me understand how some people on nostr still think Israel makes a good case for itself.
Iran is not killing civilians. Hezbollah wasn't killing civilians (they were depeating the Iron Dome and hitting sensor arrays). Israel is slaughtering civilians, taking out city blocks. If there is such a thing as good and evil, it is patently clear which one is evil.
I listened to much of the first episode and I think he really get into the shoes of the people whose story he tells. I was very impressed. I don't recall anything he said being wrong, but he did certainly defer counterarguments when he was telling it from the side of the Jews.
But I haven't listened to the whole long thing yet. Thanks for reminding me.
It will truely be only historical though, he doesn't go beyond 1949. And the recent events are far more interesting to me.
Did they now?
I'm not going to pretend Iran is a good country without serious serious problems. Maybe they killed civilians. But I heard from an Israeli news source that only 2 people had minor injuries from Iran's attack. Did that get updated?
Iran clearly is trying to do the most limited response it can under Article 51. It cannot just be attacked and not respond, that is military suicide. Buit it doesn't want a war. It wants friendly relationship with the USA. It wants a new nuclear deal and sanctions lifted. Netanyahu is determined to scuttle anything like that.
Also, if the USA is not responsible for the military actions of Ukraine, then Iran is not responsible for the military actions of Hezbollah.
I'll be eating kimchi and miso soup, because I don't think it is healthy to go without some plants and bacteria. Once I'm done with my keto period I will reintroduce things like cabbage and swedes.
Ok fine. I give up. I am going to try Keto. Too many of you who I respect swear by it. And I've recently gotten heavy for unclear reasons. I need an emergency measure, and strict fasting erodes muscle.
I"m not worried about the saturated fat. If you can't keep those levels below about 9% of energy, then you aren't getting the cardiovascular benefit of that "trick". Once you are eating more than that, the amount doesn't matter (it is a sharp S curve). A few months of "normal" saturated fat intake is in no way going to offset the benefit of the weight loss.
I'm not worried about high protein intake. I expect to get 30% of my energy from my own body fat; I'm not replacing a 2500 kCal diet with 2500 kCal of meat... that would be mad. It is more like fasting augmented with some meat.
I'm not going strictly carnavore, but pretty close. I will have salt, papper, tea, coffee, miso soup, kimchi, metamucil.
I'm starting at 104.9 kg.
Advice and support is welcome.

I've practiced "sugar control" for 30 years. Even small amounts of sugar tastes too sweet for me. I don't crave it, I am repulsed by sweet tastes. I'm very much "off of sugar".
And intermittant fasting does work for me. But it isn't always easy, and the effort psychologically detracts from other things I'm trying to put effort into.
It is good to hear this worked for you.
And also good for me to hear that sugar was the binge craving. Because I haven't craved sugar since I was 5 years old. I hate sweet tastes. Always did. But I do love bread... :-/

If I buy green coffee beans and roast them myself, are they likely contaminated with mycotoxins? I have a UV light to check for that classic aflatoxin glow, lemme check ..... nope they don't have aflatoxin.
Your experience is very much what I expect... where you just can't eat any more fat and protein, and yet you are still hungry for something. Your body wants carbs (for the brain at least) and has to subtitute ketones, but it really doesn't want to, so you remain carb-hungry.
Thanks. Yes we are complicated and all somewhat different. I experiment on myself a lot and I take a lot of clues from evolution, some evolutionary arguments are very convincing. Gluten alone didn't make much difference in my case, but cutting out coffee+milk+wheat for 2 weeks did fix my IBS for a while (until I started cheating)... it took almost 2 weeks for the result to occur which is probably why it has been so hard in the past to test foods (I didn't know I had to wait so long). HIIT is great. I climb hills as fast as I can, forcing myself to over-breathe makes it easier. My current keto diet is not a short-term change, it is a short-term experiment. I will evaluate what to take from it after I'm done experimenting.
You are right on the metamucil I have pure psyllium husk I am using that instead. I just grabbed the bottle for the picture without much thought. Metamucil has sugar anyways I think.
Everybody hopes for some simple trick that will make all their problems go away. Avoiding gluten, avoiding blue light, keto, etc, etc. Most of these interventions have no effect on most people.
And even a major intervention like a CPAP machine isn't curing my daytime sleepiness!
When I think back over my life, only twice was there a simple fix for something:
1) losec cured (or at least put into longterm remission) my many-year-long perma-heartburn (it probably worsened my IBS though)
2) athletic tape cured my longterm plantar fasciitis. Yes, $4 of tape beats $400 orthotics every day of the week.
So it is possible for "one simple trick" to work, but these are rare things.
But if you have a story of a simple thing that made a world of difference in a longterm way, please share.
Wahl clippers are unreasonably good. No other brand comes close.
As for an e-reader I'd choose a Kobo. You can copy the books to your computer and decrypt them so you will never lose access to them. I'm not sure you can do that with a Kindle.
Ok sorry I was wrong to put keto in that sentence. I was thinking how everybody I know that did keto lost weight but gained it back later on... but it surely has an effect.

I wouldn't call it a simple hack, not as easy as a pill or athletic tape. But I benefit from that and I concur. If you are going for more than 1 day I would use a protein drink and weight training (including hill climbing) to avoid muscle loss... so not a strict fast for too long. Even if you have tons of body fat, you burn both fat and muscle during a fast once you deplete your glycogen which happens in about a day.
You are right, if you keep doing it you will keep the weight off. And your visible measures of health will be great.
But I'm not convinced that longterm keto is without risk. I think it raises the risk of colon cancer and atherosclerosis very significantly. I've talked to doctors who have told me they are seeing a huge uptick of young people with colon cancer, far more than ever before, just in the last 5 years. And I notice that is when carnivore diet became popular. And I notice that medical research going back many decades has made that association before many times. So I have a hypothesis and I'm running with it.
Of course medical science might be wrong, or misinterpreted or whatever, but I don't want to argue this. We can just agree to disagree. I just wanted to state my position so you understand my personal choice here.
I'm only in it for the short term. I will lose weight, I will see what all the fuss is about, and then I will slowly adjust the diet and try to keep the weight off.
Some sleep apnea is caused by obesity. In my case you are correct. In Joe Rogan's case you are not.
I've been experimenting on my IBS for years and still haven't come to any firm conclusions. Sometimes I wonder if maybe it isn't a food intolerance at all -- for example, maybe some nights I sleep in my stomach and the pressure that causes shoves stomach acid through my duodenum counter-cycle to my digestion, and that stomach acid without bile salts or something similar is fucking things up. Just a hypothesis, hard one for me to test.
I'm at the end of day 2 on an essentially carnivore diet, except I am eating some kimchi which isn't even strictly zero carb but does have high vitamin C and fiber. I plan to go 30 days. You could say I'm taking your advice, except that you basically described what I'm already doing.
I keep burning myself into the ground. My house is a mess, my lawn is overgrown, and it is hard to stay awake, and I still cannot keep up. But I get distracted by war news... I gotta stop looking and start sleeping.
I could not get it to compile. After 2 hours, instead of holding up the release, I just released everything else. I'll keep trying but I'm really quite stuck.
If you want to try, cd into packaging/flatpak and run 'build_flatpak.sh'.
For some reason it pulls/uses rust 1.77.2 which is too old for some of the deps. I can't figure out why it is using that since both rust installs on my system are 1.80.
I am going to be attending a Town Hall meeting on free speech next week, put on by the NZ Free Speech Union (of which I'm a founding member).
I would like to have a stack of flyers about nostr to hand out in order to purple-pill people.
Can one of the many graphic designers here come up with something, or point me to something that is already designed and ready to go?
