After two years full-time here on #Nostr, I'm going to say it again...

It's not a good sign that...
I'm not convinced that it really is up to us. You can't force people to value or use something like Nostr. Especially when it's such a monoculture. I plan to post more cigar and pipe content as I can to help diversify content, but I'm skeptical of how much it will matter.
Imagine Trump wins and appoints Elon to accountability office and Elon brings in Ron Paul and the...
You will need even more help if it doesn't. It has to happen at some point.
Private keys are too difficult for the human.

The average house user does not want to deal with ...
It effectively does. Send me your keys and I'll show you what I mean.
No, that is not the only way and you don't get to decide what the goal for everyone is.
That is literally not fucking true. They could each hold their own keys, one could, two could. There are a lot more than one single way for keys to be managed. And I think it's retarded to delegate key management for an entire family to a single person. At least a single key. A multisig setup would be better, but still far from the ONLY way.

Think a little. It won't kill you.
Getting distracted by a squirrel lmao.

Cats kill squirrels and it's fine, but when the governmen...
It takes a special retard to not see the differences between these two things.

The biggest relays are Bitcoin topical relays, sometimes leaning toward Nostr Dev relays.

Give o...
Is this a message to devs or users? (My understanding of relays is still pretty weak).

Is there anything I can do as a user to help with this? (Add specific relays, etc).
Ah. I didn't understand what topical meant. It would be cool if clients added such relays when someone follows a particular topic or whatever. Or at least offer to add them.
The whole relay thing has been one of the most annoying aspects of UX for me.
It's bananas when a FOSS project says they don't want more donations (because of how small their operational expenses are) when the app is buggy and becoming unusable (AntennaPod).

I can barely use the app for listening to podcasts anymore, yet I'm still being discouraged from donating money.

I don't understand it.

Debian is similar in that they take donations (in a very convoluted way the last time I made a donation) but are hardly willing to actually use it to make Debian better. The last I checked, anyway.

I don't run a FOSS project, so maybe I'm just missing something. But I do like to support them in ways I can, which is usually financially. What's the point if they aren't using the money to improve the software?
They even use 'Ape in' as if it's a good thing. Lol
Personally I’m leaning towards Greer being a fraud and bser. Much of what he says doesn’t pas...
Maybe he is, but I think the general concept of the work is interesting and important. I'm generally skeptical of people who say disclosure is a mission yet hide it behind a paywall. However (and I don't know what's behind the paywall, so I'm speculating), it's really common for all types of research to be behind paywalls. That's the biggest lesson I've learned from academia, and frankly, a lot of it, somewhere along the line, was at least in part funded using tax dollars. A lot of the paywalls I've ran into seem sketchy for that reason, but my main point is that it's pretty common. Again, I don't know if it's his research or just some other documents he doesn't necessarily own.

I understand the need to fund research and have no idea how to balance that with open access for people who aren't using it commercially. I'm skeptical that his stuff has commercial value, but I have no idea.
There is some content on Nostr that isn't strictly Bitcoin or Nostr related. However, the problem I see (and I could be wrong) is that such content only has a chance of gaining traction IF the attention of a larger Bitcoin or Nostr focused npub is caught.

I just don't see a sustainable path here for people who want absolutely nothing to do with Bitcoin or the Nostr protocol, which frankly is going to be most people.

The exposure I've gotten to other topics on here have come from my feed of Bitcoiners and Nostr developers. Primal sort of drove me that way when I first onboarded, and my feed is now driven by a few larger npubs.

This probably IS natural given the context of Nostr and alignment with many Bitcoin values, but it really isn't surprising that others aren't sticking around. I've found like two people interested in cigars (and they post Bitcoin related content lol). I've encountered hundreds to thousands on other platforms over the years.

Telling people to sift through a mountain of spam and rando npubs to get started isn't going to do it. The onboarding was pretty much entirely through a Bitcoin lens when I joined. This stuff is beta as it is. That isn't good or bad, it just is.

Frankly, it's all too nerdy for people other than the majority already active on Nostr. Even I get bored with it, and I'm extremely interested at baseline.

I don't know how to solve it. I suspect time and better UX will bring more people. But I'm not surprised as things are.
This seems like a good time to say that the 'no algorithms' marketing crew aren't necessarily demonstrating a virtue. Algorithms are wonderful, and can be designed ethically.

I don't see a future for the social media use case on Nostr without applications having discovery and relationship algorithms (at least as a default with the option to disable or tailor).
nostr:nevent1qqs8xhzqppt3uuuyetz8rnks7d2yp4zz5f29m9qn6z8vv3z3ywvllygpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzv9hxgtczyrl2rpkz53ncm0zrwuzwa5skpprw3fupuha3wptwnwen8pqdt000yqcyqqqqqqge8y34t
I'm not sure what would be left other than porn and spam.
Sure, but good luck discovering it. I'm not saying that one can't painstakingly sift through the shit to find something else to follow. But the onboarding experience for me was driven by and toward a handful of large Bitcoin and Nostr accounts that now dominate my feed and the people I interact. Discovery has been a tedious experience and one that I have largely given up on. Maybe I am the problem here, but expecting the average person to stick around is goofy in my opinion.

For example, this is what I get for the first three pages when searching for music as a keyword.

https://image.nostr.build/de8f87511368d65da9ac93ce7cafae22124788be94ad361779b78d915786eb20.jpg

Development is happening at an incredible speed, but I don't buy that excluding Bitcoin and Nostr content will result in a sufficient feed for the average person. Even the artists and musicians I have discovered came from my Bitcoin feed. They're Bitcoiners who also do art and music.

None of this is a bad thing at this stage, but I don't think the UX or userbase exists to attract and retain people who absolutely do not want to see anything related to Bitcoin or Nostr specifically. It's all in beta, which is why I haven't recommended Nostr to a single normie in real life. Even my Bitcoiner (lite) friends aren't interested.

I think it will require some branded application that doesn't advertise ties to any Nostr protocol or Bitcoin stuff and offer people a very easy way to manage keys. We aren't there and people leaving quickly is exactly what I expect. I tend to think we shouldn't taint people's view of Nostr this early on by recommending it to people who aren't at least somewhat interested in Bitcoin and relevant tech.

I see myself as a beta tester here and nothing more.
And the noob sees this on the most popular client for one of the two major mobile platforms.

Stuff like this isn't going to keep average users around.

It's going to be okay with people like us, who are already here.

My fingers would be absolutely fucked if I tried this.

In the US, I compare it also to three rights specifically:

The right to free speech (encryption can protect my speech in transit and at rest).

Most importantly, the right to bear arms (firearms or body armor for personal defense). I have the right to defend information critical to my life and property (like Bitcoin).

I also use it to defend myself from unreasonable search and seizure. In this case, it's an explicit protection that prevents the government from just secretly stealing what they can't get legally. At least in theory.

I still work for it, but I dump it ASAP.
I ordered: Scrambled eggs and cheese. Pretty simple. The ingredients say: Scrambled egg, white Cheddar, salt and pepper. Great.

Oh, I wonder what this little "Detailed Ingredients" link will show. After all, they showed me the ingredients. Seemed simple enough.

They are putting seed oils in fucking scrambled eggs now.

Ingredients: Scrambled Egg (Liquid Whole Eggs (Whole Eggs, Citric Acid [To Preserve Color]), Canola Oil)

Bro. What the fuck. It isn't technically a scam since I did get some portion of an egg scrambled, but it feels like a scam nonetheless.

And it gets worse.

The Salt & Pepper also has a buried list of ingredients: Salt and Black Pepper Blend (now it's a blend, okay): (Sea Salt, Black Pepper, Canola Oil)

EXCUSE ME?!

I'm going back to hardly ever eating out. It's better that way anyway. Fuck it.

I'm just in shock. Salt and pepper isn't even safe anymore.

It's in fruits and vegetables naturally too. I'm not all that worried about citric acid. It's not like you're breathing in the mold.
But yeah, I generally prefer no preservatives. Citric acid is one of the least offensive ones in my opinion.
Making my own food using raw ingredients has helped a lot. I can't reasonably attain perfection right now (and probably never will), but I've reduced the impact significantly compared to my past. Maybe that's the best I can hope for in my country right now.
It’s my genuine belief that Kamala Harris’s IQ is a few points below the national average.
I'm usually able to discern whether an opponent is smart or not and admire their skill even if I vehemently disagree with their conclusions.

I've never felt that way about Kamala.

Maybe she's a gifted actress. I don't know. She deserves an award for portraying stupidity if that is the case.
Vehicles have become so goddamn complicated that even dealerships are having issues actually fixing problems for me lately. The new maintenance approach seems to be to replace parts and rack up the bills until something sticks. I've experienced this in multiple areas and shops. I've also noticed that I can no longer do the same simple fixes I used to do on my older vehicles.

You almost need engineers in the shop to work on the fucking things.
One breakthrough for me has been my realization that I consume way too much information. It's just how I'm built. However, it can be detrimental when I don't slow down to actually apply or sit with certain concepts long enough. Often, information applied if more beneficial than information consumed. This is a massive lesson for me that I wish I'd figured out at 20. So goes life.
 Good morning ☀️

I have not received a message from anyone yet

Guess the bull run hasn’t...
99% of them won't be getting a response from me.
 Policing in America is fucked.

My proposal:

-BS/BA education minimum

-Some number of hours in a higher responsibility position (EMT, nursing assistant, etc - something that requires skill and an ability to make decisions under pressure and without abusing power)

-THEN a psych and physical fitness eval, and whatever other requirements of acceptance into a 2 year minimum police specific training program.

-Lastly, starting out in either a lower level position (parking enforcement, community assistance, etc) or partnering with a senior officer and demonstrating excellence for an amount of time before going solo or becoming a non-probationary officer.

Plus continuing education, and mental and physical fitness requirements to keep the job.

This would require a lot more money and career potential to attract the best, but I think it's better than: completed high school, completed a six month course, and reached 21 years of age. It's really no wonder we have so many horrible people in LE. The standards are super low.

Being a cop should be incredibly rewarding and a privilege given to the most moral among us, not a career any asshole can drop into with little effort.

Falling through the cracks as an unfit police officer should be incredibly difficult, and I think it would be a lot more difficult with these standards.

Ending the drug war and other stupid laws would help even more.
You're not being a killjoy, you're over inflating your concerns. I've been through a lot of my proposals here, and there wasn't as much DEI and PC leftist stuff as you're insinuating. It's certainly not as systemic as you seem to think it is. I'm sure there are varying degrees of those problems in pockets, but that doesn't mean we should just throw our hands up and say fuck it.

As for unions, those exist now. I'm skeptical that they would be opposed to having better standards in training, career opportunities, and pay. Besides, we get to vote for the people who actually make these decisions.

Most Americans on all sides probably don't want some dumb fuck 21 year old (in general) with little life experience running around with a badge and a gun. I just don't buy that police meeting my proposed standards would be worse than the very low ones we have right now. DEI or not. That stuff already exists right now anyway and people don't have to go to those kind of schools. I didn't.
Intended by whom? That's exactly my point. WE don't have to accept it. Hopelessness and unwillingness to demand change definitely isn't going to fix anything. I think the average American voter is what's broken. You can't let bad philosophy and low standards run rampant and then take none of the blame. We are the system.
You are right, my paintings are worthless, the people who bought them so far don't like my art, t...
Then why buy anything ever? Your statement applies to pretty much everything one would or could buy.
Not everyone is buying art as an investment. I might just like to look at a particular picture on my wall. Buying everything based on the value it might give someone else in the future seems like a pretty pointless life. Art should be bought based on the value it brings to your life.

I don't think art is necessarily a good investment anyway unless you plan on outliving the artist (or they are already dead) AND a lot of people like their work or you have reason to believe they will. The problem with art is that it could be low value now but priceless in a museum two hundred years from now. It's also super niche. Money isn't. Everyone uses it.
the people on nostr are some of the smartest and coolest i’ve ever got to know. who cares if it...
There is no shortage of idiots either, so it may have a greater reach than you realize.
 😂
Bitcoin gains value and my paintings with them.
Were they valued in fiat my art would be worth zero.
In terms of USD, the obvious negation to this whole debate is to buy the 500USD worth of Bitcoin and immediately send it to the artist just like you would if you were paying in fiat. Your point only makes any sense if you aren't spending and replacing or earning income from some value you provide in a market. You could argue this for any money you spend on anything. I just spent $260USD on Yeti products. Could I have invested that instead? Of course. Will someone pay me more than that in the future? Probably not. But we have to separate our investment pile from our spending pile and decide how much we want to put into each based on individual values. Otherwise, there is little point to life. Delaying gratification can be good, but that doesn't mean everyone will have the same idea of what that means (I buy new underwear and don't sell my chairs and go into debt for Bitcoin). I value my happiness and wellbeing right now to some degree more than future potential earnings, but I do have my own lines (I don't buy brand new vehicles or the latest electronics, etc).

It's also worth considering that the major levels of volatility in Bitcoin come from it being an emerging technology. There would come a time when "going up" doesn't mean what it does now. It's value would only increase with population an economic growth, which probably won't be anywhere close to the levels we see as early adopters.
 How would you define yourself:
selfish or generous?
 Both.
Selfish and generous are two different concepts, so one need not be one or the other.

The opposite of selfish is selfless, not generous. This isn't just about being picky with words. There are important philosophical differences that can have a huge impact on one's life.
When I was younger I thought “wow if everyone believes that it must be true”

Now that I’m...
Neither has any bearing on truth. They're both equally wrong.
That isn't what you said in the original post. You're watering it down into a different point, which is a pretty weak debate tactic. It's not the point I actually responded to, nor are you responding the actual point I made.

Even setting that aside, the number of people who believe a thing has no bearing on what reality actually is. It doesn't matter if the belief is in the affirmative or negative.

What is and isn't true exists independently of human perception. But we have to actually evaluate things independently to live life as intelligent beings as part of a society. Basing our evaluations on the number of people for or against a given position doesn't actually mean your belief is accurate or true.

You seem to think that truth is whatever the fewest people believe it is. That isn't necessarily going to lead to the truth. It's a ridiculous way of evaluating anything. Sometimes a minority is right, sometimes it isn't. There's no definite correlation.

Intelligence also has nothing to do with the topic and is not correlated with being right or wrong. Another weak tactic.
I'll be more interested if someone puts it on Nostr. I get turncoat vibes from reading that article. But at least it might be open source if it does. The idea is cool for those who can stand that format.
 Fucking A+ response though. Lol

I tell people that the best strategy I've found that's worry free is to just keep stacking over time regardless of price. I'm far outpacing most Americans and the gap is getting wider for me every year 🤷
Fuckem. I'll buy the dips every time they get rekt.

Anything connected to the internet is going to have essentially the same problems, just in a more limited capacity.
How would an algorithm even begin to know what is good for your individual well-being? The algorithms are supposed to serve you content you'll engage with. Would you want to see a bunch of shit you don't find engaging?

I understand the negative consequences that can come from social media use, but I don't understand the expectation that a social media company is supposed to somehow know what exactly is good for you. You are responsible for figuring that out for yourself.

The algorithms are mostly just reflecting you because that's what makes money. They wouldn't be making money if they only showed you things that you don't keep choosing to engage with.

Clickbait is lying. I don't give a fuck if it gets more people to consume your content. I lose respect for you because you have poor character in my eyes.

It's pathetic and probably attracts lower quality consumers. Maybe that's the goal. Cool. But I can't imagine that any decent human actually respects you.
The best way to understand recursion is to understand recursion.
I guess we need a ComplyGuy bot to go around checking compliance for every note posted.
I don't see how taking free contributions from Russian contributors is supporting Russia's political aggression. Unless they were being paid or there's some other law not being mentioned here...

I believe there are some export laws that cover certain types of software, but it isn't as clear to me as he implies it should be.
Apparently it is an executive order from Biden causing the chaos.

I do find it concerning that he made no effort to defend maintainers who weren't exactly no name contributors. He had no issues stating his other political views.

I also hate Russia, but I see no benefit in going along with clipping dedicated FOSS contributors without even acknowledging the absurdity of it.

I can understand the US not wanting people to directly help the Russian government or other enemies, but I don't think FOSS should be a concern. I especially don't think alleged defenders of FOSS should just go along with this sort of treatment for contributors without calling it out as bullshit.
I'm not sure that flies if an official regulated entity is involved. For example, a non-profit or something that spearheads a project (as with Linux). Maybe best efforts to collect dev data will suffice, but this is somewhat unchartered territory (for FOSS software) in the US from what I can tell. It may not suffice and anon devs may just get booted anyway.

The best strategy could be to let the regulated arm do what it has to and then use the right to fork for those of us who aren't regulated non-profits or whatever.

I'm honestly not sure how this plays out. Centralized funding is an obvious issue here because that's the attack vector government is using. It isn't practical to go after every single one of us pulling from repos.

I think the result is going to be greater fragmentation, lower quality and less secure software in the long run. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Either way, forking Linux outside the US may help, but so many other US based projects are using it that I just don't think it's practical. The whole thing is goofy.

Centralized technology stacks are the problem. Building on a broken foundation isn't going to address the root problem. They can always just change the software to ban or break your app store.
