Here is a great tip for Core Lightning node runners.
I have found that the automatically chosen fees when performing a cooperative closing are too low to confirm quickly during these times of high fees. Here is how you can close a channel and specify a fee:
lightning-cli -k close id=<PEER PUBLIC KEY> feerange='["52000perkb", "96000perkb"]'
This says to offer your peer (who is currently online) a range of 52 to 96 sat/vB. I found with another Core Lightning peer that we agreed upon the low fee that I offered so you should expect the same.
I find that I would much rather have any lightning related transaction confirm within a block or two rather than leaving open the possibility for fees to jump and have a channel end up in a limbo state.
Hello #Bitcoin node runners who have some ability to monitor bandwidth usage! Have any of you noticed a large increase in bandwidth usage over the last 24-48 hours? Optimistically I'm hoping this is due to new nodes being bootstrapped and performing IBD. I'm just wondering if others are seeing this or perhaps I just had a handful of nodes that were downloading a lot from me over the past 2 days.
I think that's right.
One thing I've learned from failed attempts at "orange pilling" is that you can't sell something to someone who believes they have no need for that thing. If "normies" are generally happy with their current social media platforms they don't have a strong enough incentive to learn a new platform. If/When they realize they need a censorship resistant platform #nostr will be there for them.
This is insane! Someone opened a channel to me with a fee that was too low to confirm. I took the TX ID and used this tool and viaBTC mined the TX! I'm not sure why they are doing this since it is costing the pool money so I wouldn't expect this to be around long term but enjoy it while you can!
Fellow #Bitcoin node runners:
If you are running Bitcoin Core 26.0 please enable this in your bitcoin.conf file:
v2transport=1
This will enable BIP324 v2 transport protocol which as I understand it causes communication to be encrypted between nodes that have v2transport enabled. I can see from my own node that there are very few other nodes have have BIP324 enabled! Lets bring those numbers up! You can check your own node with:
bitcoin-cli getpeerinfo | grep transport_protocol_type
and hopefully you see a few "v2".
I currently have 198 peer connections to my #Bitcoin node and have only 1 peer with whom I have a v2 Transport connection. At least I know it works but we have a long way to go!
I think it will go lower. The degens will run out of money eventually.
Now fee pressure from an ETF approval and #bitcoin price ripping, that fee pressure will be pretty persistent.
Testing LNURL Withdraw. Doesn't seem to be working with Phoenix or perhaps not working at all. You can try to claim the free 111 sats!

As a node runner for a couple years now I generally agree with your sentiment. However you aren't doing yourself any favors running LND. Switch to Core Lightning and be happy (or happier at least).
I think this is the right move for Braiins and I hope they attract more hash as a result of the change.
The only downside I see is there is no way to accurately pay out the transaction fees since miners are paid proactively rather than based on the fees collected in a block. Those fees have been pretty material for a while now.
Here is the problem. On a new Phoenix wallet with a newly opened channel all of the liquidity is on your side of the channel. As a result you don't have any inbound liquidity to receive a lightning transaction so Phoenix does a submarine swap which increases the size of you channel but is an expensive on chain transaction due to the current backlog of transactions in the mempool.
If you were to do a bunch of spends from your Phoenix wallet in the form of many zaps or a purchase at Bitrefill or something, those sats would move to the other side of the channel. You would then have a good amount of inbound liquidity and a transaction like the one you are trying to receive would come through as a regular lightning payment with very minimal fees.
Phoenix is an excellent wallet but since it's non-custodial you do have to think about channel management to a degree.
You are a legend!
@ODELL gave @MartyBent a hard time about getting on normie social media but if this wakes up a couple of people by "meeting them where they're at" it is 100% worth it.
IMO pools can mine whatever transactions they want and miners can choose to mine with them or not.
Ocean's sin was acting in bad faith by false advertising about their pool.
ETH is 100% riding on the coat tails of #Bitcoin. It absolutely needs an ascending Bitcoin to pump.
The ETH Dev team has done everything they can to constrict supply to get the turd to pump but there is no long term value in that approach and the market is realizing that.
I think so and hope so. I always marvel at how many things Satoshi had right out of the gate. These inscription folks can broadcast transactions forever but at the end of the day they have to pay the fee. Only they can decide how long and how much they want to pay. Most likely they will reach their limit and then I can force close my AWOL lightning channel partner.
I don't know why more people don't set this up. It's no problem!

Same. Self-Sovereign Zapping is the way.

I don't understand why more people don't do this, it's easy!
nostr:nevent1qqsfcse9xzyuewqrvnwl92f7729hpr3u9hw2smpz3u8slqz9v98ekwsppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qgstdyhuuwa60007jraan73ykgg72nx04gsr4pqugm4uuaw4mhj5y8crqsqqqqqpydaral
My primary account includes only F-Droid apps and a few that I sideload that don't depend on Google Services. I spend 98% of my time here.
I have a secondary user account with sandboxed Google Services installed and a handful of apps that require it.
Some apps require Google Services and won't function without it. Most often it seems to be for notifications but it can be for other things as well.
As an example I sideload the Twitter app. It works 100% except for notifications which is cool with me. Other apps just won't work without Google Services but I find that most do minus notifications.
Core Lightning is fantastic and noncustodial. You could open one channel to a large node. That gives you a pretty good spending experience.
Receiving Zaps is a much bigger issue. Noncustodial Zap receiving requires a BTCPay server and is technically challenging to set up. You also probably need to have your node connected over clearnet to reliably receive which presents privacy concerns.
You can do this!
nostr:nevent1qqsfcse9xzyuewqrvnwl92f7729hpr3u9hw2smpz3u8slqz9v98ekwsppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qgstdyhuuwa60007jraan73ykgg72nx04gsr4pqugm4uuaw4mhj5y8crqsqqqqqpydaral
You can certainly feel them trying to program you.
I would like to dump it completely but I do feel like there is good value in the macro content as well as the diet and fitness content. Not too much in the way of quality #Bitcoin content like there was several years ago.
This is outstanding! Thank you for adding this. I run GrapheneOS with no Google Play services. I install the X app via APK and without Google Play services there is no possible way to receive notifications (I'm fine with this actually). Now with Amethyst I am able to receive notifications. Amethyst is more of a 1st class citizen on my anti-Google phone than the X app! Great work!
Very likely you will have to allow write all for the Amethyst topic. I've set this up for my Synapse Home Server and that is the recommended approach for a locked down personal NTFY server. This guide is very helpful for a personal NTFY server:
https://docs.ntfy.sh/config/#access-control
It worked for a Zap with my own NTFY server! I found that it didn't work for a direct message.
If people have access control setup on their NTFY personal server they will need to run something like this to allow the notifications:
ntfy access '*' 'up***********' write-only

Yeah, I don't feel like he is a grifter like most altcoin folks. He ran a business that helped a lot of people stack early on, went to prison, and when he got out #Bitcoin had moved on without him. I think he was just trying to get back in and altcoiners will welcome anyone with own arms.
I'm a fully self sovereign Zapper! I don't rely on any 3rd party to send and receive Zaps!
Several months back there was a lot of discussion about how the vast majority of Zapping was custodial. There is no need for that, it's easy to be fully non-custodial!
Here are the quick and easy steps if anyone is interested:
Run a Bitcoin Node
Run a Core Lightning Node on clearnet with good liquidity and a handful of channels
Connect BTCPay server and configure a Lightning Address
Install the BTCPay Nostr Plugin
Update my Nostr profile appropriately
Great, it works, but not reliably so I also added some channels:
getalby - minimum channel size 10,000,000 sats
WalletOfSatoshi - minimum channel size 5,000,000 sats
Now it all works reliably, easy!
I hope you could catch my sarcasm because I was laying it on pretty thick! Unfortunately there is no way that even the vast majority of Nostr power users can pull this off. I'm a Bitcoin Nerd (masochist?) who sets this stuff up because I think it's really fun. Maybe someday there will be an easier way to set up non-custodial Zapping but for the time being Zapping will be fully custodial and I think that's okay. We need more more "Zapping Providers" and more diversity in usage of these providers so that if a given provider rugs the entire Nostr Zapping community doesn't get wiped out. Happy Zapping Nostriches!

You've done the hard stuff so you can get there if you want to. BTCPay server is like magic and does so many things well. Getting up and running with BTCPay takes some work but once you have it running and have a Lightning Node connected the LN Address and Nostr parts are easy.
And then after all of that I can't Zap you! Looks like I need a channel to StackerNews as well. Jeesh!
I have no idea why Core Lightning won't bother to try more than 1 route.
https://bitcoinlizard.net/nostr/error.png
This is because the fee is too high as a percentage of the total payment. I can Zap you via the Core Lightning CLI. I suspect I can put something in the Core Lightning config to have the small payments be reliable as long as I'm willing to pay routing fees that are greater than the actual invoice amount.
With WoS shutting down in the US I thought this might be relevant to some. Roll your own Lightning Zapping setup and become unruggable!

A lot of open source Android programs leverage NTFY for notifications, you may want to check it out. It works for users that don't run google services. It works great!

Yes! My 5 sat/vbyte force close lightning TX confirmed today. I had a feeling that those sats might be living in the mempool forever.
I can't wait until anchor outputs are deployed.
#Bitcoin and Lightning incrementally improve wherever they are stess tested. Thanks for your contributions to improving the protocols inscriptor folks!
This is very good news. I have a forced close lightning TX that has been floating in the mempool for months and i think it has a great chance to confirm this weekend or sooner!
Well I guess that won't happen!
Ironically I use Zeus as the front end to my CLN node and I'm not going to be coding up any changes to block LNURL to zeuspay!
They are a pointless waste of sats in my opinion but they are paying customers so they can do as they wish. I hedge by mining at home to offset my higher transaction fees.
Also, a number of shortcomings in Lightning have been exposed thanks to the high fees. I look at the whole inscriptions thing as a tool to further harden #Bitcoin
Did I miss something?
I mean, I agree. It's terrible. I've run Core Lighting for a year or so now and been much happier.
LND sure garnered a ton of network effect by being fairly user friendly and getting application support out of the gate. Now the technical debt is piling up.
