The greatest technological advancements that improved the human condition were made by self interested individuals. People that are trying to get wealthy. 

 A different way to look at is to consider what it would take for a collective “we” to fix the problems we face today. Since everyone will never agree on the same solution to a problem, we’re left with majority rule. When the individual sacrifices himself for the collective, we end up with statism, democracy, etc.
