Today was Anarcoooooooooon!
We usually camp the full Friday through Sunday event, but this year, because of the rescheduling, @boatingaccident and I were only able to come down for one day. We brought my pottery and I actually sold some despite the lower than usual turnout.
Each year, they’ve held a Toxic Masculinity competition with spear- and axe-throwing (that USED to be coed…!)
This year, for the first time, they also held a Tradwife competition 👀
I was invited to participate and repeatedly declined, but my husband pointed out it would be pretty funny if I won, which is true…
…it is indeed extremely funny to both of us that I won 🤣
We were scored on speed and skill in several challenges: folding a fitted sheet, diapering a baby, throwing grenades (water balloons) to protect the homestead, and separating egg yolk from white using only the eggshell.
One older woman seemed to have it in the bag with her perfect sheet folding and accurate aim, but I must have beaten her on time and egg separating.
Good thing it was a contest of skills, not strength of belief in the importance of gender roles, or I would not have won:
- a snazzy sash
- in-jokes with my husband I will never live down
- a cast iron skillet
- a silk flower bouquet
- the “baby” we diapered which was a cloth doll handmade by one of the judges, which makes Sophia extremely giggly and happy
It was fun! The energy of the spectators was intense, especially for fitted sheet folding. The organizers picked good challenges and good prizes.
As a bonus, it was a minor point of humor for me to see the menfolk holding the babies during the tradwife competition 😁

Let me say this… I think guys like form fitting dresses ✨on perfect bodies✨
I tried on a mermaid wedding dress because I love that look. I did NOT love it on me 🤣 I would be much cuter (positively cute) in a flowy sundress than a skintight mini (negatively cute)…
Damsels in distress used to often be flat characters who are unrealistically weak, serving basically as a macguffin to motivate the hero, not as a person.
Real life ones: it’s no fun to feel powerless, especially when the condition is foisted upon you by limiting social roles.
When you’re actually working to the best of your abilities and still need help, it’s a different feeling.
One of the coolest things about the Virginia State Fair yesterday was the marine exhibit, which unfortunately I didn’t think to take any pictures of at all, probably because I was holding Sophia.
She got to pet a live horseshoe crab (and scream because I didn’t put her in the water with them 🤣) and see many other live marine animals from the Chesapeake Bay like blue and hermit crabs, pipefish, and spadefish.
I had no idea such exotic-looking fish lived nearby! There was even some kind of small fish that looked a little like a less-extravagant lionfish to me, with “walking” pectoral fins to walk across the bottom. I can’t believe I forgot what it was called; if anyone can remind me, I would appreciate it!

Yeah! Yesterday was just the first day. They’re open through October 6. Check out the schedule, they have some special events!

As for me, I didn’t ride a single ride. I went for the other aspects of the fair, oriented towards farming and crafting.
I think those are the main aspects and rides are just a bonus diversion, especially for kids and teens.
My friend told me earlier today the Lake Lure dam was filling up and people were told to evacuate. That flooding is horrible. You never think about that happening so far inland.
I view notes and replies by default.
It’s useful for new leads on who to follow and who to mute.
And for butting into the middle of interesting conversations.
It’s generally a good idea to also include photos of
- spore print
- cuts on the mushroom made a while ago and immediately
- habitat or discussion of habitat and nearby flora
