what are some sources that estimate total number of bitcoin nodes, reachable and unreachable?
Sometimes when folks call me mean names on social media I wonder:

* What do they expect it to accomplish?

* Do they realize I've literally had guns pointed at me as a result of social media antics?

* Do they have any clue how amusing I find ad hominems to be?

 Please enable zaps!
Lots of folks are upset about ordinals because they can't understand how a market exists for them.

Truly I tell you, the same view is held by nocoiners about bitcoin.

Markets don't require your understanding in order to operate.
If you don't think speculation and gambling are markets, I don't know what to tell you.
Folks have whined about Bitcoin not being a proper currency since inception.
 Cry harder 😘

Ser you need to enable zaps so you can stack sats on nostr too.
I've generated a visualization of the 2023 developer activity in the Bitcoin Core repository:

Does anyone want to generate the gource video for Bitcoin Core 2023 development? Bitpaint appears to be inactive...
Today is a good day to create a secure off-site data backup.
https://blog.lopp.net/how-to-securely-back-up-data-to-cloud-storage/
You can load a GPG key into multiple yubikeys.

Any decent service should allow you to add multiple 2FA yubikeys.
In 2024 we all get girlfriends.

If you already have a partner, then they get a girlfriend.
 Gym was empty this morning.

I guess the New Year's Resolution folks are laggards.
 My 2023 nostr stats!

I sent:

700 posts
630 replies
42 zaps
32 reports

I received:

 Yes
I am fairly judicious because I don't like sending dust.

Although my volume is low, my average send amount is 7X my average receive amount.
I guess I have a high bar for posts I consider insightful or entertaining.
has nostr gained more active users?
 Pretty flat
 Lately we're seeing on nostr:

* 10,000+ daily active trusted pubkeys
* 20,000+ weekly active trusted pubkeys

Let's aim to 10X it in 2024!
You lovely folks have zapped over 5 BTC via over 2,000,000 zaps this year!

My question to educators in the space.

They can see all the UTXOs that you spent to fund the transaction.
I'm not a fan of passphrases because they result in a brittle 2-of-2 setup. If you lose either the seed phrase or the password, you lose access to your funds.
Distributed 1700 TBTC to nearly 50 people today. Don't spend it all in one place! 😏
 Ding ding ding 😇
Yes it's a valueless shitcoin for developers to play with so they need not put real funds at risk when engineering bitcoin software.
Should be the same as mainnet, you just have to set your node's to use the testnet network in their configs.

The trickier part would be finding lightweight lightning wallets that support testnet.
 Correct
Are you a Bitcoin developer in need of testnet coins? Reply with your testnet address and I'll make you testnet rich!
Different network magic bytes, different address versions, slightly different mining rules.

Here's why there are deep incentives for a Bitcoin fork with the Ordinals people.

Ordinals/BRC-2...
I'd love to get a nice airdrop, but I doubt there's enough value available to be extracted from the ordinals side of a fork.

Should probably start with a futures market to test the waters of this theory.

My annual node performance tests are now live: https://blog.lopp.net/2023-bitcoin-node-performance-tests/
Normies see a holiday, a time to relax and socialize with family.

I see an opportunity to buy the dip in the block space market.

We are not the same.
 Yes, both backups are brittle.

In my experience, people tend to

A) Create incredibly complex passphrases
B) Not back them up because they created the passphrase in their head

Also, I think folks fool themselves about the utility of durress wallets.

In general, I like seedxor more because you KNOW it's getting backed up AND the backups have plausible deniability.
Mainly that duress wallets are speculative.

1. You're speculating about the attacker's knowledge and motivation. For example, there was a physical attack recently in which the victim gave up their wallet pretty quickly, but the attacker kept torturing them for hours in case they were holding out.

2. You're speculating about how you'd act in a high stakes stressful situation.
I'm pretty sure that guy has been anti-Bitcoin for a decade soooooo good luck.
It's time for end of year review metrics!
In my experience the total addressable market for node devices is 5K-10K and many folks who buy them actually buy every company's device just to try it out.

And a ton of folks who buy them never even set them up.
Your profile doesn't seem to be zap enabled.
Who's the jackass at Google who decided that the mute toggle in Meet is CTRL+D instead of spacebar?
bcash would have been a good name for Bitcoin ecash but we wasted it trolling Roger
I told Roger from the very beginning that he should have called it "bitcash" but he was hung up on being Bitcoin.

If you buy Bitcoin ETF you are dead to me
Instructions unclear, my 401K has been almost all GBTC for many years.
I suspect Craig Wright will disappear within a few years. The only question is if he disappears of his own volition or if he gets disappeared by Calvin Ayre.
Not much, just feels like he's running out of runway.
If I publish my annual node syncing tests on Christmas Eve, will anyone read them? 🤔
If it's a SATA SSD I'd assume disk throughput would be the culprit. Have you checked that and compared it to a disk throughput benchmark test?
That wouldn't be very fair since no other client supports it 😆
 Over the course of 2023:

Reachable Bitcoin nodes are up 16% to 16,837

Reachable Ethereum nodes are down 25% to 7,483

Reachable Bitcoin Cash nodes are down 28% to 645

Reachable Zcash nodes are down 48% to 4,175
Sounds like a job for Starlink!
You could also look into Blockstream Satellite if you want to nerd out. Just a one time setup cost of a couple hundred dollars IIRC.
 Yup, over tor of course.

It's kinda funny that tor nodes are MORE reachable than clearnet nodes because there are no NAT issues.
If you are reading this message, you are the Resistance.
 I'll take that as a "no." 😆
Even Lowery failed to respond to my critique of his thesis; we shouldn't expect any of his sycophants to be able to mount a better rebuttal.
