Hmm good question. I just thought that meant that’s the relay the wallet service uses for publishing zap events once the payment is made. But I’m not actually sure.
So apparently Microsoft Word and Excel scrape your files to train its internal AI, and the feature is turned on by default. Wow 🤯

I’ve seen people here say they’d like a Nostr app like TikTok for video. I’ve even thought that at times. Throughout the election season, I spent a fair amount of time browsing other social media apps, including Tiktok. I hadn’t used it in a couple years and I hate it now compared to what it used to be. It is essentially this generation’s “Home Shopping Network.” Nothing but constant ads, even from people who “aren’t advertising.” This isn’t really surprising, I guess, but it’s a horrendous user experience. Whatever improvements can be made on nostr for video publishing and consumption, PLEASE don’t make it into another TikTok. 😩
I’ve run a node before. I intentionally choose not to right now because I know it’s overkill and too expensive for what I need. Most people are in my category. Not sure why people get offended about that lol
Some people also oversimplify self custody lightning into all or nothing, and it doesn’t need to be that. I use a mix of self custody “node in phone” wallets, liquid, and then custodial services are primarily for zaps. Each use case can have a different solution depending on the situation/need. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
At current levels of zapping, no there is no real economic justification for it. If someone has a business or otherwise processes a larger amount of lightning payments each month, then the cost/time associated with running a node (or paying someone like Alby to do it) makes more sense. At this level, though, custodial services are more economical and lower risk for most users.
My entire post and argument is about zaps. Even said so in the original post. Self custodial LN payments with Zeus or Breez are easy enough. Self custodial zaps are not economical for most people if that’s their only need, which it is the only need in my case.
Just got Alby’s email about officially ending their custodial wallet service in January. End of an era. Can’t really justify the cost of Alby Hub or running fully self-custodial just for zaps though.

Channel management is costly and time consuming. If it wasn’t, then the custodial services wouldn’t be going anywhere. And the problem isn’t that they want to charge, but how much they’re charging here. 21k sats a month at these prices is exorbitant. 😂🤷♂️
They are ending their self custody wallet service in January, and lowering limits in the meantime. This email started going out today.

I don’t think this has any impact on being able to use the browser extension for nostr, other than the wallet function now needing a node/albyhub if you need that feature.
I appreciate Alby’s push to make self custodial easier but I feel that they are refusing to acknowledge that they’re leaving a lot of their core user base behind with this move. It irks me that they do not even want to acknowledge it. Custodial services have a place and for most people it serves what they need. As it stands, most nostr users will simply move to other custodians, or use cashu wallets which are still custodial and are even less proven and reliable than Lightning.
The reality is that humans always have and always will rely on each other. Alby had an amazing product/service that many relied on because it was reliable. You’ve decided to completely shut that product/service down. That’s your prerogative. Now you have launched a new product that is no doubt equally amazing, but for a much different and more niche market segment and user base. Again that’s your prerogative. But the attitude I’ve encountered from you and others on your team is that you are dismissive of this market segment. Well, I appreciate what your team has done, it’s a bit offputting.
I respect the work you and the Alby team have done, and building easier self custody tools is great. It’s just a major shift in what Alby has been, and for me it doesn’t provide what I need. Many users already went through this in the US when Wallet of Satoshi pulled out, and Alby was a reliable and stable alternative that filled that gap. Now that gap has been reopened and most of the users like me, who don’t need to run our own LN node and can’t justify the expense for the cloud service, we will simply leave Alby. It doesn’t matter how good the new product is, or how dedicated your team is, because while it is admirable it simply doesn’t fit our need. You’ve lost customers because of this.
Dear @AQUA Wallet the updated app design/colors are great. But please, for the love of all things holy, give us a way to show the balance in sats instead of BTC. 😭😭😭
I can only assume they were thinking of bitcoiners like Adam Back and not poor pleb stackers like me when they decided to denominate in BTC instead of sats 🤣
