I’ve seen people here say they’d like a Nostr app like TikTok for video. I’ve even thought that at times. Throughout the election season, I spent a fair amount of time browsing other social media apps, including Tiktok. I hadn’t used it in a couple years and I hate it now compared to what it used to be. It is essentially this generation’s “Home Shopping Network.” Nothing but constant ads, even from people who “aren’t advertising.” This isn’t really surprising, I guess, but it’s a horrendous user experience. Whatever improvements can be made on nostr for video publishing and consumption, PLEASE don’t make it into another TikTok. 😩
 THIS!

TikTok is much better if you use it in a country where they haven’t enabled the crazy home shopping network functionality. This is kind of like Amazon where they found a business model that makes so much money they can’t stop as it destroys the central value proposition of their platform.
I didn’t realize there were countries that don’t have the TikTok shopping thing
Yeah it’s only US, UK, Spain, France, Germany, and Italy I think right now.

I have such an American bias though I read this stuff for hours every week
I wish there was a way to turn it off. It was such a fun app 4 or 5 years ago when I started using it, but they’ve ruined it sadly.
It’s inevitable though. Even mastodon has a version of TikTok now.no clue if anyone actually uses it or if it’s any good. It’s new. Looply if I remember right.
No doubt nostr needs better video-centric apps. But how to avoid the advertising model destroying it for users is another question I guess.
 Bring back Vine….

But also, the legacy platforms fed people video. Video gained traction because they forced it. Then culture took it on and demanded it.

But video is for entertainment, mindless zombie scrolling.

It’s no way to communicate 1:1 like we do now on here.

I know of few who met and made friends via mindless scrolling of trendy videos.

Connection is still the killer app.
Advertising on centralized apps gets crazy as users simply can’t opt out or customize what they’re being bombarded with.
💯 And on TikTok they’re showing ads like every 2-3 videos you scroll past. It’s really bad.
And (like all big tech) their app is bloated spyware.
This is amethyst.. get yourself an android and you will every best feature in nostr

If I didn’t hate everything else about android
You missing out.. hahaha android is the real deal. When you open an iphone all the parts say Samsung 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️
Android is great... Of you degoogle it and get f-droid
 Yeah, that sounds like work.
 Freedom ain't free
That’s one way of looking at it. The other is people don’t have time.
Anything that collects my data I can do without...

Full stop.

Doesn't matter what the value proposition of the platform is...
And yet you connect to nostr relays?
 🤣
Sure...I'm just a nobody here on Nostr--yes, AI may eventually be able to identify me, but I'm comfortable with Nostr.
 Slowly working on it.

What’s needed is a suite of tools so that any kind of video app can be built on top of nostr - from TikTok streams, progressive VODs, to event streams.

The tools need to allow for a ton of ways to market/charge for the content, while still being optimized for content ownership. This is tough, but I’ve got some theories I’m testing out.

Finally, I think to truly make a lot of the incumbents obsolete, there needs to be a mechanism for managing the consumption of content. This means tracking - but it doesn’t have to mean divulging your identity!

My goal is secure, anonymous video distribution that decentralized over time via consumption.

I want to kill the media industry by putting their power in everyone’s hands. And I want to do it for free.
