You can't be in peak physical condition if you don't jog/run. #changemymind
What is peak physical condition? Did you mean peak atheletic performance?
Peak physical condition of your own body. You don't have to be a mega athlete, just consistent with your regimen. People to obsessed with metrics & physique - but the people with best quality of life I see all low impact jog long term.
The current science is that the impact helps with bone density and regrowth afaik but I wonder how much of that can be achieved by other means like dances involving stomping and applying pressure to joints with regular yoga... body adapta to running fast for somepeople and gets too efficient for growth
Yeah man, there's no replacement. Do you really think hunting animals involves walking only? 😆 It's what we're built for!
Difference between sprinting and pacing resting digesting and thinking ... we are not gazzells and cheetas, is there such a thing as too much cardio ...🫀 💀😂
Haha there is such a thing as over training, but most people wouldnt get anywhere near that!
why? easy to over train running, shin splits and fascitis , ligment tear, stress fractures ...
Maybe from asphalt jogging, but low impact natural terrain jogging as part of a regimen that includes weight lifting & maybe sports is ideal. Can't save everyone & can't prevent injury from life in general. Refrain from jogging at your own risk.
yea asphalt sucks, but you're right, simplest thing to get fit and have fun is to run. Getting injured sucks tho, many ppl get overzealous at the start and overtrain.
If you make me choose between the two extremes I'm taking the overtrain crowd.
I'm in really fucking good shape and I do neither. I WALK and BIKE ratarded amounts of miles. Bad ankles. Did I change your mind?
No, youve just given up on physio & strengthening your ankles. Bicycle good, but doesn't replace low impacting jogging.
I'm considering this
Special Olympic competitors would give you the looks if you say that loud.
Intervals on the bike/spinning as well 🫡
This allows for muscle building & endurance but bicycling doesn't replace jogging. Remember, there is a difference between natural movements & man made inventions.
I think rucking might be a good replacement. Walking while carrying weight is a thing humans were meant to do. Jogging and running are good too of course no debate there. But it's surprisingly easy to injure yourself running jogging. Rucking I think has maybe equal benefit, less downside.
I use to run a lot. Small kids + long winter. Easier to stay consistent with the spinning bike. Other than that I walk a lot
Winter = the best jogging experience. All the benefits of running & cold exposure.
I used to do that a lot too. Lots of dark ice. Phone would eventually give out: the battery didn’t do well with weather that cold. Also urban area. Sidewalks is not the best for the joints (concrete). Street (asphalt) is better but too much cars
Surfing
Great for you, but not a replacement for jogging / running whatsoever. Not even close.
Idk, in my experience running endurance doesn't transfer to swimming or surfing very well, but swimming endurance does to some degree transfer to running. Idk if it's quite the same with surfing, but expending energy with your whole body for extended periods of time while your breathing is greatly limited is truly one of the most intense forms of exercise.
The mechanics of your legs are being used surfing, but the natural motion of moving on the earth has a physiological benefit to human beings that can not be reproduced. That's why longevity & quality of life are both excellent in people who keep their mechanics strong in the fulcrums of their bodies: Ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, neck. Running, Crawling, Swimming, Walking. The natural human motions, but which are more important to a land mammal?
don't do it as a jog-maxi just do it great reward "in the long run"
Depends on your definition of peak. I can no longer run. It was my favorite sport most of my life but I have an out of place bone in one foot that has given me arthritis and I have 3 days of pain for every run I do. There's no surgery or fix for it. So I have to do everything else, my new peak cannot involve running 🫂
Have you gotten second/third opinions on this? Never heard of something like this. Also would recommend The Foot Collective on YouTube.
Yep, many doctors + physical therapy and also tried to just do barefoot running etc to fix it but no luck. They think it was either genetic or some injury basically my navicular bone is no longer between the other two bones. It no longer gets blood flow and has necrosis +arthritis. Options are surgery to rebuild entire foot (low chance I walk again) or deal with it and I can live a normal ish life except no running or long walks. Hoping medicine advances enough that that changes. https://m.primal.net/KIiv.png
Very sorry to hear about this brother - sounds very unlucky - I hope for you too that we find you a solution. Do you walk daily in barefoot/ minimalist footwear?
i did for a while, it actually fixed my other foot which was flat but no luck on this one foot S'all good, I've learned to deal, my point was more that the peak may depend on the person 😅
How long did you commit to the barefoot footwear & why did you stop? Yeah bro I understand that some people have injuries that physio can't heal - but I feel that is very rare. Most people just don't want to put in the work.
Long enough to run a half marathon in vibrams 😅, they're still my lifting shoes as I love them. Unfortunately unless I have an arch support on that foot the two bones there close up and aggravate the arthritis. Ok during the day but wakes me up at night. That's why I stopped
Heard that, have you seen the sandals with the ball in the middle? https://www.avostherapy.com/products/avos?variant=32521104916542¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjww5u2BhDeARIsALBuLnMAKma-t-nIFeCQBQeheK1SSJLe6sruBsqxUlblADOd34zibk2_BUQaAmqwEALw_wcB
No, those look awesome
Lmk if you end up getting em, considering the purchase as well as a physio item if my feet feel the need for some relief.
There are a TON of things people can do in place of running. HIIT and TABATA training provide great cardiovascular workouts. Cycling, rowing and swimming all work well also. I trained Strongman for several years and we would drag weighted sleds or suitcase carry at a quick pace with short rest intervals for cardio. Step and aerobics classes are also great. I took a step class and a power lifting class for electives during one semester of college and I was peaking pretty good by the end of the semester. Honestly, if you want absolute “peak” performance even running should be trained in intervals. Whether it’s a 5K or a Marathon. I’ve done all the above at different times in my life and never failed to do 5-7 mile hikes at high elevation with a 50lbs pack. I guess it all boils down to how you define peak performance. P.S. If you really want to be humbled try jumping rope without stopping for the same amount of time it takes you to finish a 5K. Every time you miss, add a minute. 😈
I totally understand where you're coming from, but this is not what I'm talking about when it comes to peak physical condition. Longevity & quality of life maintenance is the goal. If you can add low impact endurance jogging to your regimen & are just choosing not to, you're just conceding that you refuse the ideal natural motions of the human body / physiology.
I love “Longevity & quality of life maintenance is the goal” and ideal natural motions of the human body / physiology. I try to work these motions into my daily life. For example: watch how a baby moves or an ape moves. None of them ever bend at the waist they always squat to pick something up every time you pull a weed or go to get some thing out of the bottom cabinet squat instead of bend at the waist. Need to pick up something heavy dead lift, need to pick something up over your head power clean. Seriously, watch a toddler pick stuff up. This is exactly how they do it. We as humans learn a lot of our physical movements by mimicking and the factory/Office culture that we’ve evolved into is a completely unhealthy way to move our bodies. I agree that people should run, a lot. We should stretch every day also. However, as one ages, repetitive motion and overuse injuries become a real concern. All the guys that took part in the jogging fad of the late 70s and early 80s had bad knees by the 90s. Mixing things up helps avoid wearing things out. I understand running is your thing right now and that’s great. One day run 5K, the next day do a 30 minute interval workout to improve your 5K time. The next day do a long slow day. Doing the same thing every time you work out is repetitive and injurious. This is a good conversation, keep it going.
You're spot on bro! I need to a do a better job of not bending over, it's been killing my hips! Great reminder appreciate this!!! & Definitely must do everything in the right amounts, big believer in that & training knees is something I do religiously through following the ATG program. (kneesovertoesguy).
I hate how correct this is
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
