All centralized systems fail in the long run because they have a central point of failure. They almost always outperform self organized ones in the short term. That doesn't make decentralized systems the best systems. Different systems for different reasons. Speech and money should be decentralized. They cannot fail. There are some tradeoffs that make central systems great for certain other applications.
Military for example. Self organized armies will on most occasions fail to defeat a centraly planned one. They lack the coordination made possible by centralization. The exception is when the Central authority makes a big mistake. Decentralized systems will make less mistakes over time.

But I gotta say, I post about grain from time to time, making a big robust relay implementation from scratch. Nearly no engagement usually. But when UTXO makes a 1 off specialized relay, it's the talk of the town for a few days.

My goal in making grain was to reduce this list. 2 of them are my own relays. It's hard because you want to have reach, (your notes on lol or damus, but you don't necessarily rely on those relays to indefinitely store your notes)
As a user, I'm skeptical to remove the big relays because I'm unsure if all clients will look at my specified relay list for my notes. Grain will get a backup relay config soon enough. Then you can specify a blaster relay as your backup and know you've broadcast to a big public list while your relay list can remain small.

There are handful of nip98 server implementations (nostrcheck server , route96 and nostr.build) and none of them are easy to set up. None of them have compiled binary releases. (Not that I expect them to) I'm sure I could get one working worth enough tinkering but no time. What's interesting is they are all three different language implementations. PHP/HTML, Rust and TS/NodeJS. The PHP would probably be my favorite as I don't have as many packages managers and dependencies to go find and set up but on the other hand it requires you have a webserver executing PHP (not too bad though) I'd really like to see an implementation that a normy can clone, download a simple database with little experience, and set up their own self hosted nip96 server. We still have lots of work to do to make users more capable of maintaining data sovereignty.
As soon as the video on the code base is done, I'll add a backup relay config for grain. Then set it to a blaster relay and your notes will go everywhere with just one relay in your outbox.

Public private key pairs are usernames and passwords and I just think it's a cool fact that users don't make them, they are generated and ironically have more true ownership of the things they unlock than any other service where the user hand selects their username and password.
