I've done some bird stalking in the backyard, and then got to see the Brown Swiss cows at a neighbors' farm. So far, it has been a good way to spend a federal holiday.
@d083a60e 🤣 We had problems that people worked on for PhD theses as test questions in an AI class back in 2004. Predictably, everyone bombed it.
Did the prof. change approach? No.
Treescope cont.
... Provides semantic segmentation labels of scans for tree stems, ground, and misc. Provides ground truth diameter at breast height (DBH) measurements. Baseline semantic segmentation methods are RangeNet++, SqueezeSegV2, and SqueezeSegV3. Baseline diameter estimation methods are DBCRE and SLOAM.

Happy Friday! Our blackberry, 'Prime-Ark 45'. It is in its second year, there are still blooms and berries on it. An everbearing type. We love it. I saw this N. Mockingbird try to get some of the fruit and it was unsuccessful. We put up bird netting in the early season and since the birds haven't taken off with most of the harvest, did not net the parts that grew this summer.

While shopping for an overbed table,
"...This also makes it convenient for you to use this overbed desk for *oil painting* while in bed, not just using your laptop or Kindle. "
Some of these descriptions are quite hilarious.
Modelling wine grapevines for autonomous robotic cane pruning.
Henry Williams et al.
Publisher & free pdf (open access): http://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biosystemseng.2023.09.006
tl;dr: Systems paper concerning the 3D modeling of grape vines, for cane pruning. Uses learned methods for panoptic segmentation and stereo inference. (Detectron 2 for panoptic segmentation, HSMnet for stereo inference.) Uses an over-the-row unit with two UR5 arms to acquire camera data.

@88b449c5 I liked this photo b/c the first time I saw it, the tall building in the distance seemed like a road, just 90 degrees from the road the vehicles are on.
Very neat. Illustrates your underlying message -- there buildings and roads everywhere you look.
I got my ?th covid booster yesterday and MERCY SAKES I feel like my body has been stretched past normal limits.
Joint pain, which I have anyway, seems to be a consistent side effect for me.
@51872fa7@a9e37abc
This is also my fear -- that we're going to have a for-real shutdown in 45 days. The mess in the House is so bad I'm trying not to look.
I'm looking to get a KVM (keyboard-video-mouse) switch, and need to it play well with Linux and Windows, support 2 monitors, & 2 mice + 1 keyboard.
Anyone using a switch they would also recommend?
I've been doing some reading and given the price on some of these things, want to get it right from the start.
@ff82dc5e So ... were you bare-handed leaping on alpacas today? Sounds ... interesting.
One of my many horse farm jobs was at a pony farm. 200 ponies. Getting a halter on the little Dartmoor foals without getting kicked in the knee - had to sort of grab the critter length-wise and hold it against a wall, and hope the mare didn't go after you. Sigh. Those were the days!
@134318c2
Yes. I post less because I ask myself -- "do I really want to type in the alt text for that photo of a book page?" and usually the answer is no.
@f1795701 How much does it cost in tolls to get from KY to ME? I have to go to NJ occasionally and the TOLLS .
And then get a passive aggressive letter from the PA Turnpike, '3rd notice!' when it is the first notice.
[education] TIL about Bloom's 2 Sigma problem courtesy of @af2dd916
This tracks w/ what we've observed with our kids .... when they started in virtual school 3 years ago, we were surprised at what they did not know. Virtual school was student working w/ parent checking & teaching study skills, etc. Now the kids are in physical school ... & we still need to check, study skills, review, comms, etc. The TIME.

I really really want to have an American Sycamore but I don't have the space for it. Is there a way to grow a huge tree, small, but not bonsai small? thinking about
- large container,
- root pruning,
- plant growth regulators.

@224e8c26 I have a similar response ... last fall I got the flu and covid-19 vaccine at the same time ... that was really not a good idea. So I will break them up this year.
Buttercream (BC) the Brown Swiss at Mom's. She was very friendly, Mom changed the feed schedule to enable catching Buttercream. Buttercream will get shots to bring her into season, and then Mom will arrange for an AI tech to come breed BC, again. This is round 4. Buttercream -- "I'll be a 3-year-old unfreshened heifer! ha ha jokes on you humans."

It has been a while since I've used my DSLR -- been using the mirrorless z6ii lately. It was fun to use it again, and a light rain gives the perfect light for large critters -- minimized ear and head shadows!
Michael Dirr on White Pine, cultivar 'Pendula':
"'Pendula' is s flailing, arching, pendulous, irregular form that is often staked to provide a semblance of a central leader. Use as an accent plant; one is acceptable, two represent bad taste, and three disgrace."
No one talks trash about plants quite the way this guy does 😅

tfw: I'm reading one of my oft-rejected papers, and I'm thinking, "hey this paper is pretty good! I would like to read this even if I didn't write it!"
So let's see what happens with resubmission.
@a808b8e5 she's very weird about it -- like soft things are suspicious and she doesn't want to walk on them.
Your dog likes like they are having a very nice time, utterly relaxed.
