It's the only social media I use (if you exclude YT). Instagram and Facebook are data harvesting machines that I don't want to feed. Twitter's algorithms are too addictive. And they are, because they tap into negative emotions. I didn't feel good about using them. So there is Nostr. It's interesting and new. I like the idea of decentralised social media and open source stuff. And I really appreciate the lack of horrible algorithms. I also like to sweat sometimes and appreciate to not get punished for that. And last but NOT least: we are beaming the hardest asset/money ever known to mankind through space at the touch of a button. Oh, and Udi Wertheimer isn't here. Thank fuck!
oh yeah, that anxiety about getting banhammered or cultshamed... i've said some pretty daring things on numerous occasions on nostr and a few funny reactions but not the kind of cancel gang situation i'm used to from anywhere else... it is like the old days of phpBB and Simple Machines, before the facebook and google machines started up... oh, you could get into a little bit of trouble being controversial but it was not the same cult drone army situation anyhow, even if mister sunglasses shows up to try and influence his flock of drones here, i doubt that anyone not interested in his nonsense will even hardly hear about it i think that the cult leaders know that they don't have a big cult leader behind them to back them up here, that's why they are so scared to come here

Bc the bird app is worse every day. On Nostr I don't get bots, ads, scams, bc we have Zaps, integration with other clients like zap.stream and other cool apps. Bc it's worth investing my time bc the data belongs to my account. Bc i developed and want to develop more apps on nostr and the potential is bigger than ppl realize.

A handful of people I’m not connected with or don’t see elsewhere, memes, and zaps. That first one keeps shrinking though, not growing.
Any insight as to why they leave?
I’m sure everyone has their own reasons, but I think some of the top reasons would probably be the echo chamber, the trolling and harassment of varying kinds, the lack of any kind of algorithm to boost visibility and gain followers, and the bugginess of the clients.
Because I can contribute and build on it instead of being a passive user. I also think I'm helping Bitcoin by creating apps that use Lightning and nostr. I feel free here, reminds me of my early internet days and gives me hope for a better future. There are huge challenges ahead and I'm not happy with the state of many things but the protocol has insane potential.

Using Nostr more for my daily social media has made me realize how much time twitter was sucking from my day. I can feel my brain hurting when I'm on twitter for more than 5 minutes now. My body is beginning to actively reject it. Kinda wild.

Covid 19 was an awakening for me. Never in my life was I so aware at the preciousness of being able to exchange information freely with another human being. If people can be censored and separated from each others thoughts and analysis, whether right or wrong, if we can be cut off from the spontaenous order of unfettered collective thought, then tyranny has a free hand, and that hand invariably wraps itself around your throat. If Bitcoin is financial self defence, then I at least hope that Nostr is my communicative self defence. If Nostr is dedicated to the preservation of free speech and censorship resistance, then I will back that horse.

One of the many reasons is that you could have a look 3-4 times a day for about 5 minutes and you see every post from the people you follow. And you're done for the day. But if you want to, you could search for tags, trending 24h and so on. But it's your decision, not the algorithm

Just to let you know. Some clients already support the filtering OUT of keywords or certain nostr lists. Snort and noStrudel for example. If you set your own filters you can tailor your timeline to see more content relevant to your interests.

It does not suck and it feels different. Other socials started with people you knew directly. Nostr started for me by reading Jack and Derek’s tweets about it. I know neither of them personally. Never really enjoyed social media stuff, avoided it mostly, and reducing Nostr to juat that isn't my intention, it's more than just that. Constantly evolving, with so many features not even targeted for me, but fun to watch get built real time. The interoperability, with both various clients and lightning. Proving to me there is a group, however small that use sats as a standard and see the potential and actual use to all that. Came from my deep dive and interest Bitcoin, stuck around to read interesting takes, tech stuff way over my head, and memes. The general chaotic nature of it all and emergent topics of the day I miss half of. There's more interesing stuff being said here to me than what most other Internet pursuits have degraded into. Similarly, as it evolves today onwards, Bitcoin is transitioning from a non-usurious instrument into a tool of usury, influenced by the descendants of those who controlled the 1919 gold fix. New here. NOSTR has lowered by blood pressure level.
New to it. It feels like a new enough space to experiment with what "works" in terms of connecting with people. It feels more authentic, I feel less lost in the noise.
As far as the social media aspect… I like the culture and atmosphere better than the legacy social media, as for the protocol as a whole, I’m just excited for the possibilities

I like watching the future being built around me. Reminds me of when I tried the Cello browser as a kid (yeah, I'm pretty old). There was no TCP/IP through Prodigy, so I requested html files via Prodigy mail. Then I had to assemble the data block by block to view the HTML files in Cello. The internet happened anyway despite how slowly it came together. And so it will be with Nostr, the first protocol built by based people on the principles of open discussion and based money exchange.

With X I think the end was when I set out to try and remove some obnoxious accounts being 'suggested' to me (only horrible big media accounts). I set on a mission in my head to remove them from my feed and after blocking even reporting found it to be impossible like whack-a-mole. Kind of felt like I wasn't in control anymore rather than a place I went to to do what I wanted.

It does not show ads. And the feed is showing me a timeline, that changes almost everytime i look at it. Thus it is social. And it doesnt show what does it think it should show me. At least amethyst and some other clients i use do not do that.

I have been a #nostr user less than 2 months. I still use it because I enjoy it. I have read a variety of interesting notes and engaged in conversations with several users.
Experimented with it in the past before, but more permanently stuck around about five months ago. I like the protocol, the people seem nice, and it's pretty interoperable with the Fediverse.
Nostr is better than the Fediverse because it doesn't tie the user identity to any given server.
I like being around people with passion to make something new work. It inspires me.

Awareness and education.
I believe Nostr is the answer to permanent, public documentation in the same way Bitcoin is, but complimentary. We should use Nostr to do what Bitcoin can’t and use Bitcoin to do what Nostr can’t. This way, everything is permanent and verifiable by anyone anywhere at any time. It forces the accountability we need to heal humanity.
