I came across a "deleted account" in my follows, someone who started on nostr over a year ago but gave up just recently. In their last post they said they'd genuinely tried but it just wasn't working out for them. However, when I checked their stats on nostr.band the results were unsurprising. They were not actively using nostr. They posted maybe 1 note a day avg., never zapped anyone (publicly at least), and only followed ~200 accounts. That is not "genuinely trying" to use any social network, including nostr. You get out what you put in with most things in life, and nostr is no different. It's ok to be a passive lurker, but if that's all you put in then you probably won't get much out of it. If you want to find depth of experience here, be present and active, and engage with people in meaningful ways using the features of the network that allow you to do so. You will make or break your own #nostr experience. https://image.nostr.build/226bdbb6d6cbb531bed73f44ecae3fa9953351cbe105752b73ae8849bf84e043.jpg
Hello fren 🫂
Hello 👋 🫂
"Working" likely requires bots giving unlimited negative attention
And doom scrolling a never ending algorithmic feed of posts designed to keep you glued to your phone. Lol
Lurking can be eye opening too! The people of nostr have exposed me to a lot. Books, programs, companies, groups, events, etc that I would never have known otherwise. I generally don't have a lot to say, but I enjoy learning from smart people.
Good point. Following lots of accounts seems crucial to making that happen. You're following over 800 which is a good range to be in, in my experience. At a minimum I've found that following 500 or more is necessary to have an active feed. Even more than that is better, because then you can occasionally filter out the lower quality or less active accounts and still maintain a nice active feed.
Not saying most of it is laziness, but most of it is laziness. Most people can't be arsed to enquire about it, do a little search or something. There was a referendum recently in Ireland, and there were a lot of young people on television saying they didn't vote because the 'government didn't provide any information' to them. That is kind of what you are dealing with, people that are so spoonfed that they can't put a foot forward because nobody told them which foot goes first.
💯
I only follow like 250 and this is still way better than anywhere else imo
🔥🙌
Yes don't do this, get involved. nostr:note14xvkhrf0vlqetktmvlakjgt4vf35xaeaqxw8nxx9wpvp0zdt8u0qwj9gy2
Zaps are the key--they fall under the "tis better to give than receive" rule 😃 (i.e. the more you zap, the more you become attached to Nostr and the genius of the protocol) (Frankly I see little use for the "like" heart--if you like a post, zap it!) Zap more, like less...
Perfect meme…love it.
😂🤙
It took a good 2 years of effort to get any traction on Twitter, until the algorithms made it completely opaque and engagement went into a freezer. Nostr was quite a bit quicker, but the world is smaller here. But it does take effort. Biggest difference is discovery of people, that's simpler, but harder. The only algorithm you have is what people you follow repost, and maybe hashtags, but that is a hit or miss for me.
Yea my best advice for anyone here wanting to improve their experience is to follow more people. It's easy enough to unfollow unsavory accounts later on as they show their true colors. But in the process, you will probably find people they're interacting with and those may end up being people you love interacting with. Follow follow follow.
Not having the ads every 3 posts already makes it much more enjoyable. I'm defaulting to opening Amethyst lately, instead of X
Yes 🙌 🔥
Ironic because corndalorian made me want to quit nostr when I first joined 😂
This meme is incredible. Thank you for brightening my day.
I’m gonna slide in here to say, you should probably be spending more of your time off Nostr. I love it. I think it’s great. I’ve formed wonderful relationships through Nostr. No social media should replace real world interactions. Go touch grass.
Everyone has to find the right balance. My point is that if a person is hardly ever on Nostr, then they shouldn't be surprised that they're not finding meaningful interactions on Nostr. Good for them if they're finding that elsewhere, online or offline, but the reason is not that Nostr isn't working for them. They're simply not investing any time into it.
Like a lightning channel, things got to flow both ways or it works for awhile but eventually it just becomes useless.
💯
Oh know it might be my future 🤯 I must zap some https://media0.giphy.com/media/13RKWw9oA5o3GU/giphy.gif
Yeah, I kind of disagre. There is many different ways to use social media and even more Nostr. One might interacte a lot but some (most) will just follow and consume from creators like news or enrertainement from following accounts or hastags/interest. It's the way the majority (silently) use Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, YouTube and even Facebook I would say. Some just like, some reply here and there from time to time, some never post or even never interact at all. You should not reject any users and any usecase, there is no right or wrong, no good and bad.
He/she rejected their own use case. You absolutely should reject use cases that don't fit the way something works. There are ways to be successful doing anything, and ways to be unsuccessful doing anything. It all depends on your goals. You should reject methods that don't allow you to accomplish your goal. If passive consumption of content is your thing that's perfectly well and good, but then you should approach Nostr in such a way as to do that successfully and probably not complain about the lack of depth of interaction with others.
Are there tools built into @damus or @primal that allow a user to one-click-follow the top50 most active users? Or other such nifty cheat codes? I only recently discovered the most-popular-last24h button in Primal 😂
Hmm good question. Nothing in Damus like that. I'm not sure about Primal. I haven't seen anything in the Primal app, but their web client might have something similar to that. Tagging @miljan in case he has a moment to chime in.
Also tagging @elsat in case something like this might already be on Damus' roadmap.
You can manually trigger always show onboarding to see the suggested follows onboarding prompt. It’s hidden and not ideal today. Want to improve discoverability post onboarding. https://image.nostr.build/d4990a40a8b39d3343ca078a5ec98285b4b303346b9120606fdf6fe1cccb8159.jpg
For now practical advice is go to someone else’s follow list who you enjoy, and check their follows. Here is a snapshot of @corndalorian follows https://image.nostr.build/f3986207b267f8429c3eb2050b66888032e37169e1382b40a9f8ab7b1bc6920a.jpg
Good advises, lucky I found this post as I have just started my jorney to Nostr. Still testing different web clients, as they all seem to have something good and something missing, so haven't found my favorite yet. And yes, I want client which works on web browser, in computer and in mobile phone as well. And it has to be able to handle Nsec.app sign in (sigh, Primal!) and Settings should be sticky even if you delete all the cookies as I do. Was going to test Alby extension on browser, just to find out that it requires Lightning wallet or node, which I do not have. Just another obstacle on the path which I would like to have avoided. Just followed most of commenters in this post and realized that I have to improve my Bio, as I checked that for each one to make my final decision if pushing the Follow button or not. I have to say, that getting started with Nostr is not the easiest task. Thanks for @garden_variety_jess and her article, that was a bit easier. Piece by piece it is coming up and running, but lot of little things to screw up before you can start interacting with people effectively. On positive note I decided to add #introductions tag, so someone else can pick it up for speedier start.
Encouraging people to treat social media like a full time job seems like a bad idea.
Exactly. I expect a social media to be a 5-10 mins thing where I see the content I am genuinely interested in, interact with those notes with my opinions, and check back after 2-3 hours to see the replies, if any. Instead, right now, I am supposed to discover people on my own (I have done so), even then scroll for a long time through the notes I am not interested in and find the notes that are interesting, there is not topic based filtering. An analogy here is "coffee breaks" during work, or evening chatter with people to talk about our interests and not be chatting with people throughout the day instead of working and providing value. Who is solving for this? I want clients that encourage discussions and not content creation for the sake of content creation. The influencers do nothing but just post content 24/7 getting themselves and the crowd dopamine addicted. Also memes on the topics I am interested in >>>>> memes on topics I am not.
Well... I rejoined today!
Followed 🫡
Now i follow not even 21. 😂
Well it depends what 'working out for them' means. Cos maybe they don't have friends or discovery of interest groups is 'hard' on nostr. Read only is not much fun I think also it depends on what they are comparing to. Instagram and twitter are probably easier for discovery.
„They will buy at the price they deserve“ - stolen from another matter similar to this one
what's the meme equivalent for Nostr? "They'll join at the number of active users they deserve?"
Pra mim está ótimo… tô em paz aqui!
Damn, that’s so me 😂
Wow i follow not even 20 accounts, i post maybe 1 note per week (mostly replies) though i'm fairly new (4ish months or so?) but i have no expectations. Truth be told i'm not here for yet another social media experience. I find the protocol fascinating and like to keep up with whatever people start doing with it apart from the nth incarnation of something that still mostly looks like twitter. To me it's about the possibilities and not the actual engagement and it seems like most of the things that people do with it appear here first.
So you checked their stats to confirm your bias - right... Nostr never took off. When I joined a year ago it had about 520k members and it's now at 766k which most of it probably dead accounts. No amount of posting or "engaging" will change that fact or lure in more users (also too complicated to set up for Joe Average). My timeline/network is to 50% full of garbage like postings of steaks and food, dozens of annoying "GM"s, stupid memes and cap locks from Odell. Nostr migth not be dead yet but it's dying. Fact.
getting zapped multiple times per post and in thousands of Bitcoin (sats) will change lots of users minds.
It certainly can help 🤣🤣
Can't argue about getting paid. I'm trying to onboard the kids here to NOSTR but using their Machankura feature phone wallet.
Does Machankura give them lightning addresses? Should work fine for receiving if so. The zaps will only show on their posts if Machankura supports NIP-57, but even without that they'd at least receive the sats.
that's the issue I think may be happening. They've received zaps but unable to zap another account. But they've moved to a Primal wallet now.
Primal is probably simpler since it's all integrated. In general, sending and receiving zaps are separate actions. Any lightning-enabled wallet can pay a zap as long as you can get the associated invoice into your wallet to pay it. In that sense they are just regular Lightning payments. The receiving wallet defined in your nostr profile receives zaps sent to you, and if it supports NIP-57 will also return a receipt so nostr shows it on that post. For instance, I use Alby to send zaps and I use Lightning Tip Bot (ln.tips) to receive zaps.
this is a interesting, if I can get the accounts I onboard to receive to Machankura but send via Primal wallet, it may be able to work for my purposes. How does one separate the sending from the receiving wallet in NOSTR?
Your receiving wallet on nostr is defined in your user profile settings. Any zap you receive from anyone on any nostr app will go to the wallet defined in your profile. Your sending wallet depends on the individual app you are using at the time you send it. Some wallets like Damus give you a wallet selector when you send a zap, or even allow you copy the invoice which you can paste into any wallet to pay it. Other wallets are more limited in their options for sending. For example, the Primal iOS app can only use the built in Primal wallet for sending, but their Android app can use either the built in wallet or NWC. The Primal web app on the other hand can use the Alby browser extension for sending. So sending is different depending on the client/app. Receiving is always according to whatever wallet is in your profile settings. Hope that makes sense the way I explained it.
Wait, am I supposed to post more than a note per day. I don't have enough interesting stuff to tell you guys, my life is not a wonderland 😕 nostr:note14xvkhrf0vlqetktmvlakjgt4vf35xaeaqxw8nxx9wpvp0zdt8u0qwj9gy2
I am confused are you suggesting that 1note a day is not a lot for a grown ass person ? I am glad if i can put half an hour every few days in exploring nostr. This was always a reason why IG never worked for promoting my art cause engaging with social media on regular is not possible in my schedule and I don’t think I work more than an average
From one grown ass person to another, yes that's what I'm telling you. In fact there are lots of grown ass people on here with grown ass jobs and grown ass families who I'm sure would tell you the same. Posting one note a day is nothing. Fuck that doesn't only apply on here. If you're not active on IG, FB, or any other network you won't have engagement there either. I'm not saying it's bad to post infrequently though; I'm only saying you can't expect to have a lot of engagement if you're not spending the time to build out your social graph and your reputation.
