Matt Stoller looks at the ammunition shortages.
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/why-america-is-out-of-ammunition
A result of consolidation of the manufacturing base.
A few references to a GAO report on DOD procurement. The DOD has TWO (2) people who look at mergers and other changes of ownership - there are roughly 400 of those a year. Basically, no oversight.
Bruce Schneier about an AI audio deep fake in Slovakia
https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2023/10/deepfake-election-interference-in-slovakia.html
An odd circumstance about this item where the press was supposed to be silent in the 48 hour period before an election.
Mentions China and Russia - ignoring that the US and other countries are probably doing stuff like this too.
@d4f294ac@833914fe
I heard three excuses on the NBC Nightly News for this.
Mayorkas saying there is an immediate need for the wall. Plus the administration (not Joe?) waiving 26 laws to do the construction in Starr County TX.
Pinocchio Joe saying he is only doing so because the money was authorized by Congress - I can't stop that.
DHS Secretary - no new policy.
Plus adding Venezuela deportation flights.
@449841af
For a while.
I have two coffee cups from working B-2 and F-23 (not 22). Both were stealth aircraft and were only visible on the cups when filled with a hot drink.
They are over 10yo now - both show the aircraft (and not the cloud) when cold.
In case you didn't notice
https://saraacarter.com/tax-payer-funded-pbs-pushes-radical-gender-ideology-90-of-the-time/
PBS promotes "radical gender ideology" 90% of the time (looking at LGBT vs traditional ideas).
The study looked at the PBS News Hour - 152 hours of coverage. About 200 minutes of gender coverage. So the numbers aren't big. But I expect that bias could be detected for many topics - not just LGBT ones - in many of the regular broadcasts.
"bad cattitude" has some more comments about the Pfizer COVID vaccine.
https://boriquagato.substack.com/p/did-the-pfizer-vaccine-even-really
This isn't a new problem - points to a 2005 paper about plasmids & DNA delivery.
Basically the tests by Pfizer were done with materials produced with "process 1". The production batches were made with "process 2" and is filled with all sorts of debris that can be harmful to people.
Zombie Zoom links - beware
https://krebsonsecurity.com/2023/10/dont-let-zombie-zoom-links-drag-you-down/
It should be obvious but don't send out links to Zoom meetings that include a permanent ID and password. They can be reused later by anyone who got the link - even if scraped by Google off of a web site.
Several suggestions in the story on how to avoid this problem.
Not just AI, server farms in general are using a LOT of water
https://www.jwz.org/blog/2023/10/under-appreciated-existential-threats-of-ai-drinking-water/
Microsoft alone uses over 1.7B gallons of water for cooling. An Iowa server farm used 11M gallons of water in July 2022 - 6% of the total water used from the West Des Moines IA water supply.
Link to the AP story - not sure why the MDM outlets are not picking up this story.
Okay, this is weird

Some churches have been using immigrants to lead services in languages other than English.
Someone in the State Department made a mistake and put abused kids from some Central American countries into the wrong queue. To fix it, they now put them into the same queue as the clergy (above). The queue length is now 10 years ! Many clergy will have to leave the US.
Not clear how this will be fixed.
Today’s golf at Buffalo Dunes in Kansas. It turns out this course is also used for an Epson Tour event for the LPGA. Wasn’t set up as hard as Mystic Creek but with a steady wind wasn’t easy either.
(Mast is getting stuck on adding photos - just text today)
The permanent grandstand gave me an idea to talk with the pro about tournaments. The course has a lot of native grasses.
Three greens are being rebuilt. It is good to see them putting work into keeping the course great.
#golf #roadtrip
Today in Oklahoma City. Apparently everyone was in a tournament today. The first two courses were busy with tournaments. I played at Choctaw Creek golf course for about $20 since they were repairing the greens.
The two pictures show what the greens looked like. Either a temporary green in the fairway with a large hole or the regular green in poor condition.
The rest of the course was in good condition so I still had a good time.

Not sure what got loaded.
I’m using Mast to post the pictures and when I try to post the correct two pictures it says the media hasn’t uploaded.
I tried to work around by uploading a third and removing it. It posted the wrong pictures. Sigh.
@34b3698a
Only once.
The program manager's joke about three envelopes goes something like this.
A new manager is given three numbered envelopes. Was told open one when you get into trouble.
Gets into trouble & opens the first envelope. It says "blame your predecessor". He does that and things work out.
Another problem. Opens the envelope and it says "reorganize the team". He does that and things work out.
Another problem - the last one says "prepare three envelopes".

A video from 10 years ago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRBbvSxXvmI
It says a couple minutes in they only have specific logos on the end zones - the center is only the NFL logo. Each turf piece is about 2K pounds.
Not sure how it changed with the "new turf".

Median price in El Dorado AR is under $190k
https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/El-Dorado_AR/overview
I stayed there last night on my road trip. Was surprised how nice the town was for such a small place (under 20k people).
"downtown" was packed last night
- an Elvis tribute in the arts center
- a closed street with a market stalls in it
and so on.
It looks much more popular than some of the other small towns I have stayed in this trip.
The Colorado Sun has a story about keeping small town newspapers in print
https://coloradosun.com/2023/10/01/coloradans-saving-local-news/
A printing press has closed in Pueblo CO serving 80 papers - some of these papers are now going as far as Chicago to get the paper printed.
Dennis Prager with RFK Jr.
https://www.prageru.com/video/ep-308-dennis-prager-and-robert-f-kennedy-jr
Yeah - about 90 minutes long with some interesting discussion between the two.
A few key points
- they agree MUCH more than I would expect
- the disagreements seem to be more about side issues or assumptions
For example Dennis asks why RFK jr doesn't support Nuclear. The answer goes into several issues like
- insurance
- applying total costs (including disposal) to use fees
- subsidies - RFK jr says they are all over the place
@9b5e94b5@f1c2774e
At least in the US.
There are even some "street view" images at some ski areas as well. IIRC, they did Crystal Mountain in WA. It may be tagged as "photo path" or "photo sphere" on the map. I just checked at Vail - they have several of the green runs in "street view".
@aba3e4c9
My doctor recommended using a saline nasal spray a few years ago to take care of congestion. Instead of one or two squirts, he said to use up to six instead.
RV living to avoid homelessness
https://coloradosun.com/2023/09/29/can-rvs-help-solve-homelessness/
This talks more about staying in an RV park or similar facility. What I see on my daily walk is a couple campers / RVs that move from time to time up and down a side street in a commercial area.
I will also guess there are far more than the 6K or so this story talks about.
@7418bc22
Hey Pinocchio Joe - then tell the White House staff to STOP calling Republicans "extreme" (about 100 pages) or "extreme MAGA" (about 250 pages) and APOLOGIZE.
Then maybe we will start listening to you - not as an enemy.
@61c8a35a
I've never used anything like BleachBit on a Linux or MacOS system - ever.
They do have a Linux version here
https://docs.bleachbit.org/doc/install-on-linux.html
that could use if that makes you comfortable. Or just run without it and see how it works out for you.
@91f99226
@9a9797e1
I thought of that but my days have been pretty busy on the road trip. Between the golf, driving, and meals - I don't have much free time to do anything else. The day I drove through Dayton was one of the few exceptions.
I may have to cut down on the driving between towns the next time I plan something like this.
@4206c9f7
I drove through Mississippi a couple days ago - somehow I missed that kind of entertainment. What I saw a LOT was a random SUV on the side or median doing speed checks. (might have been AL and not MS though)
I also remember the small towns south of Dallas that used to do similar stuff on I-35. Made like 80% of the town revenue on speeding tickets. Lasted until TX passed a law preventing that kind of income.
