And before anyone says anything "Great replacement" adjacent...
NYC already had the most migrant heavy workforce of any major city on earth. 44% of NYC employees were born in other countries. Almost half.
Have you been to New York? Haven't you noticed that you can get great Shakshuka, Birria, Hummus, Tibs, Laksa, Biryani, Confit, Dim Sum, Pho, Shawarma, Jollof, Panang, All'Assessina, at like midnight, in any borough of the city?
And yes, it's still one of the safest major cities. Relax.
I'm not a racist xenophobe. I like the global south. I love its people, their kindness and love for each other, and the rich tapestry of cultures.♥️
🤔 But if I was a racist xenophobe, and I didn't want yucky Black and brown migrants coming here, then I would strongly consider *checks notes* NOT making the global south uninhabitable by human beings.
I dunno, just a thought? Seems more practical than "Nah, ruin their climate! Then build a wall (fence) capable of blocking over a billion people!"

It's truly impressive how NYC can complain that its economy is failing because 400,000 NYC residents left the city for higher paying jobs and lower cost of living in Atlanta and Austin, depleting the NYC labor force and dooming small businesses...
And then without skipping a beat, complain that its economy is failing because tens of thousands of migrants seeking work, are coming to NYC looking for jobs, wanting to be part of the NYC labor force.

The mayor of NYC is going to South America on a "fact finding mission," to understand why migrants are here.
What will happen when he discovers that one of the biggest drivers is climate change? Will he then come back and be all in on the Green New Deal? Or will absolutely nothing change, and he'll still ask people to come back into the office, commuting unnecessarily, just to prop up commercial real estate prices?
Climate changes. Crops fail. People go hungry. People start walking North.

Really good paper by Dr. Emerson Murphy-Hill and friends, about what the Engineers and Managers at Google that have successfully built and sustained inclusive teams, found worked for them.♥️👍🏿
https://research.google/pubs/pub52616/
(Related: I love my little hot takes and tweets about inclusion and all, but nothing beats sound, rigorous research to back up all the vibes and typos. Dr. Murphy-Hill is one of the folks that consistently produces good work that makes the whole industry better. Read his stuff.)
"🙏🏿Lord please grant me the confidence to deny a brilliant woman professor and researcher tenure track, demote her, push her out of my school, to be the adversity that she had to overcome in life... and when she overcomes me and wins the Nobel prize, to roll in like I did something. Amen!"

U Penn is bold! Real talk, I couldn't do that. I couldn't even fake that till I make that. Levels.
A Black woman has just been appointed to something. You know the drill:
GOP:
Why appoint based on race?! Just appoint the best person for the job, which is never a Black woman!🤡
Dems:
Black women will save us! Can I call you auntie? (No). I love Black women! Just... NTBW (Not That Black Woman).🤡
@3bd57d4d
Same!
But that's not good enough for me. Because most white people in this country do believe these lies printed about Black folk. And there are a lot of these white people. And they vote. So the disinformation is very effective.
Yes, I want more people to be able to see through the disinformation. But I also want the disinformation to not exist.
@3bd57d4d
If someone has lied to you hundreds of times before and you found out after the fact, you should not just believe them the next time they give you a statement and print it as fact. This concept is not complicated.
Journalists stating that they cannot corroborate the information yet, and that their source is unreliable and a known liar, is also not complicated.
I'm not going to waste time pretending that it's difficult to find *hundreds* of cases of police having lied to journalists.
@3bd57d4d
Tomorrow, if Minneapolis cops said that a Black man went into "medical distress" and died of "natural causes or a drug overdose," every major newspaper in the US would print their statement unquestioningly.🤦🏿♂️
Even though they know that the 1st statement cops give after an incident is usually a lie. Even though they know that this is the 1st statement that MPD issued after George Floyd:
https://web.archive.org/web/20210331182901/https://www.insidempd.com/2020/05/26/man-dies-after-medical-incident-during-police-interaction/
So yeah, Black folk not trusting US news reporting about us, is rational.

@3bd57d4d
That's just not true.
1) Cops issue statement
2) Black people say it's a lie
3) News prints cops' statement as the truth
4) Facts come out later proving that the cops lied
...
5) New incident happens
6) Cops issue statement
7) Black people say it's a lie
Etc...
Repeat ad infinitum.
It's a weak excuse to say that journalists have no choice but to credulously print whatever lies the cops give them. You don't need to go to journalism school to understand that there are options.
This survey is a big waste of time, because it doesn't ask the important questions about why Black people feel this way, or what would fix it. "More education" for journalists will not fix this.
1) Cops lie about Black people and crime. Constantly. The first thing cops say following an incident is almost always a lie.
2) Every journalist that works a crime beat knows this. Not "suspects" this. Knows this.
3) And yet, they print the lies anyway.🤡

Shout out to the polite package thief that had the decency to open the boxes at my mailbox first, to see if I ordered anything worth stealing. 👍🏿
That's just like, manners and stuff. Mighty neighbourly of ya!
Although, I'm a little insulted that you determined the answer to be "No, nothing worth stealing. This man orders trash." Not gon' lie, that stings a little.
I told y'all a few weeks back that the commonly held belief that "toxic, hate fueled, enragement based content, drives the most engagement on social media," is an easily disproved lie.
The most engaging social media platforms (Instagram, Tik-Tok), are not fueled by this content. The most engaging content across all platforms, by far, is not rage content.
The original of this Tik-Tok, made by brown girls, had over 20M views, and another 90M when re-shared on Twitter.

🤔The News is a strange industry.
If every auto company owner stopped buying newspapers, the newspapers wouldn't even notice. That's only like, 1000 people. But if every auto company employee stopped buying newspapers, the industry would feel significant pain. That's over 2 million people.
And yet, UAW stories are framed from the perspective of owners, not employees? Tik-Tok and other social media coverage frames it from the perspective of employees.
And we wonder why paper sales are down.
If Elon fired half of his SRE team, disbanded his Trust & Safety Eng team, unlaunched the most important features for keeping marginalized groups safe, and broke the 3P ecosystem of T&S tools... we can all see how this enabled abuse.
Now run that in reverse.🙂🙃
If the Fediverse gets more reliable and resilient Trust & Safety software (SREs), gets a distributed Trust and Safety Eng team, that ships the most important safety features for keeping marginalized groups safe, and enables 3P T&S tools.
Lots of conversation and swirl over the past few days. Here's what hasn't changed, and isn't going to change:
* A space that is safe for white queer people, and not safe for Black queer people, is not a "safe space for queer people."
* We will make the Fediverse safe for people of all backgrounds
* We will make it safer, easier, and cheaper, for admins to keep the most toxic abuse away from their users
* We will take our time designing blocklists and composable moderation.
I don't care if everyone likes me. I care if I'm effective. To make progress on civil rights, you have to choose. I choose effective.
You will know that we were effective, when ~20% of the trans folk on Mastodon are Black. Today we're very far away from that number. Because Mastodon is not always safe for cis Black men, let alone Black trans women. But we're fixing that.
You might not be able to see "the people that are missing," but I can. I see who's not here. And I know why they're not here
The super fashy trans folk want the Fediverse to stay uncomfortable for Black folk. Some want to make it even more uncomfortable. Some are literal nazis.🤷🏿♂️
Some trans folk pretend to be surprised that there are actively anti-Black trans folk, and ask questions like, "But isn't the Fediverse welcoming to all marginalized communities?"
I used to try to explain that being welcoming to one community isn't default welcoming to another, but now I just ask, "Have you never heard of the nazi phase?"
Defining a term "civility trap," and explaining why nazis wear suits, and why Obama never gets angry:
A civility trap is where a Black person receives an intentional provocation. If the Black person responds with understandable frustration/anger, they are perceived as unreasonable / unhinged / untrustworthy. The original provocation is forgotten.
If they respond reasonably, another provocation will follow. And more. Hundreds more.
Nazis wear suits to try to make the contrast even greater.
OK, let's get into it. Let's talk about anti-Blackness on this here Fediverse, "civility traps", and "why nazis wear suits."
First: there are some trans folk that love Black people, care about our safety, and want to see the Fediverse be more welcoming to Black users.♥️ These kind folk volunteer considerable time, money, effort, and social capital, to make the Fediverse more welcoming for Black folk. We love them for this.
But there are some trans folk that are super fashy, and hate Black folk.
The super fashy trans folk want the Fediverse to stay uncomfortable for Black folk. Some want to make it even more uncomfortable. Some are literal nazis.🤷🏿♂️

@6b43cb18@14242b3f
Some Black people quit Mastodon, because someone asked them for the 3rd time that day "Can you show me some evidence of racism?" Even though that 3rd ask might just be a proactive mod, hearing that Black users are being harmed, and looking for a report to act on.🤷🏿♂️
A lot of it is misunderstanding, and unseen experiences.
We can increase understanding and create a shared experience just by clarifying two things:
1) existence of troll instances
2) reply visibility issues
I guess what I'm saying is...
1) History doesn't repeat. But it sure does rhyme.
2) A conviction doesn't mean what you think it means. You still have to oppose fascism directly. There is no way around that.
The same way that Trump will claim credit for Biden admin Infrastructure Bill improvements in about 10 years, is how people to this day still think that "Hitler made the trains run on time and fixed the roads." Hitler did not do that.
We are still on a not great path.
