Mastodon News
The tech press is picking up on WordPress federation...
PC: Forget Twitter - WordPress.com Blogs Can Now Connect to Mastodon >>> https://www.pcmag.com/news/forget-twitter-wordpresscom-blogs-can-now-connect-to-mastodon
"Your blog can take on a new social-media life of its own if you publish it on WordPress.com. This commercial version of the open-source web publishing platform WordPress now offers an ActivityPub option to turn a blog into a fediverse presence on Mastodon and other federated social networks operating on the open standard."
Brilliant thread today on Google enshitification from Cory Doctorow @b92dcc07https://mastodon.online/@pluralistic@mamot.fr/111171192350737364
"When I think about this #enshittification curve, I often think of Google, a company that had its users' backs for years, which created a genuinely innovative search engine that worked so well it seemed like *magic, a company whose employees often had their pick of jobs, but chose the "don't be evil" gig because that mattered to them."
"And yet, it's turned into a pile of shit..."
So, this surveillance capitalism thing is totally out of hand. Today @749d2a0c had a great explainer (https://mastodon.social/@protonmail/111165171600485248) on the mind bending evil Google is up to with it's new "privacy features". But pretty much every tech company is now in the business of profiling you and monetizing your tidbits.
What can you do? A lot as it turns out, but if you just want ONE EASY THING that you can do today, SWITCH TO FIREFOX (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) and make DuckDuckGo your default search engine.
@603773e5 Not criticizing your post. It is tough to deal with people that you care about when you see them in "hooked" on something that is damaging to them. It is super frustrating because it seems so obvious that what they are doing is out of control. And it is.
But most won't take your word for it. It is something that they need to come to on their own. Hopefully there is a moment, some call it "rock bottom", when awareness hits and resolve to do something about it kicks in.
@603773e5 People say that comparing Twitter addicts to drug addicts is disparaging, and also that it is it is insensitive to ridicule people who have the disease of addiction. These criticisms seem valid.
Dependency and addiction are horrible and can ruin your life. It is insensitive to fail to acknowledge the mental illness aspects and be insensitive to those who suffer from addition. But, it is also true that the only way to "get clean" is to be truthful... (more)

@603773e5 And the first person your need to be truthful with is yourself. The first step is to acknowledge that you have a problem, and you are not in control. If this sounds kind of AAish, it is. The same techniques that people use to address alcoholism and drug dependency are available to social media addicts. Its not disparaging to say that there is a powerful chemical force binding people to Twitter. It is something people need to understand and acknowledge.

@603773e5 Thing is that it really is an addiction. For high follower count posters the dopamine fueled cycle of dependency is very real and in some ways stronger than hard drug addicts. Here is a Stanford article providing some background: https://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2021/10/29/addictive-potential-of-social-media-explained/
When posting on this subject in the past have received some strong push back on two prongs.... (more)

Recommendation regarding 'curated' accounts @31954853 and @1fe1d81f
Some users do not like how these accounts flood their home feed. Here is a suggestion. You can now remove the contents of a List from your home feed. Create a new list, add the curated account, and go to settings (slider bar icon at top right) and toggle "Hide these posts from home". Your home feed will no longer receive boosted posts from the curated account, but you can still view them by clicking on the list.
@6fdfac8e This is the sickness that needs to be treated. The damage that Trump has done to society has been to glorify hucksterism and normalize dishonesty.
So today @e184fd3c put up an analysis of the problematic legal issues surrounding a gag order for Trump >>> https://law-and-politics.online/@Teri_Kanefield/111133028862927449
Rather than learn from Ms. Kanefield's vast expertise in these matters, some responses gave vent to their anger against Trump by accusing her of taking his side etc.
Listen up. Mastodon is not a cheering squad. Most of us value honest in-depth facts, even if uncomfortable, and we treasure those who contribute their time and expertise to keeping us informed.
Anybody else feeling it? Mastodon becoming essential...?
Mastodon is tiny, yet are we now seeing the vital niche that this nascent open social media platform is beginning to fill?
Today the AoIR, Association of Internet Researchers @8a3790c2 abandons Twitter for Mastodon (https://aoir.org/aoir2023onmastodon/), and EU Commission Vice President Vera Jourova declares Twitter the largest source of #misinformation and #disinformation (https://mastodon.ie/@EugeneMcParland/111132449403615794)...
People are turning to Mastodon...

AoIR (Association of Internet Researchers) moves to Mastodon >>> https://aoir.org/aoir2023onmastodon/
"Twitter (or ‘X’) isn’t just unfriendly but actually unsafe for many more people.
For these reasons, the Association of Internet Researchers has decided that we will be ramping down our use of Twitter, effective immediately.
Instead, we are shifting our activity to Mastodon... https://aoir.social"

AoIR Moving to Mastodon (cont)
"This means that we will not be tweeting during the #AoIR2023 conference. Instead, we will be posting on AoIR’s Mastodon instance (https://aoir.social).
Mastodon and the fediverse are an attempt to carve out a better space that is not owned by huge corporations. We invite you for at least the duration of #AoIR2023 to give Mastodon a go..."

To: Journalists and others still posting on the political propagada platform formerly known as Twitter.
Time's up. Next year is a presidential election year. The most consequential election in the nation's history.

@603773e5 This is excellent advice. The "tone police" or "scolders" here are frustrated that the network they had has changed with the influx of many new users. They do not speak for everyone, and their suggestions can be overwrought, and distracting. There is no right way to do Mastodon, and there is nothing wrong with blocking or muting someone who you feel is not contributing in a positive way to your engagement here.
Oh, come on... 🤦♂️
X is no longer labeling ads for some users
"Multiple users on X have recently reported advertisements showing up on their feed without any disclosure or labeling. The paid ads being served to users appear as organic posts (aka tweets) and show up like non-paid content, right in a user's feed."

For a steady dose of world news, a great follow is BBC journalist Kriszta Satori @348f4b7b
Every day Kriszta posts links and intro summaries to a great selection of a dozen or more news stories from the BBC and other media across the globe.

@cbe08add@603773e5 They did grant licenses to put all that space junk up in low earth orbit, effectively giving away humanity's orbital space to a capricious billionaire. The US government needs to wake the hell up. This does not end well.
@98042630 This episode raises even more questions. How did Elon know when and where the operation was happening so as to disable communications at the critical moment where the attack would fail and the drone assets lost? What other operations is he meddling with? Is he sharing any comms or location information gleaned from #Starlink with the Russians.
#Musk #Starlink #Ukraine #Russia
So, let's get this straight. Elon Musk decided he had the authority to cause a strategic Ukrainian military offensive operation to fail. An attack presumably coordinated with the US. And Elon Musk shut down communications once the operation was already in motion resulting in a Ukrainian defeat. Ukraine is now in the position that military actions are subject to Elon Musk’s approval. Let that sink in.

"Elon Musk secretly ordered his engineers to turn off his company’s Starlink satellite communications network near the Crimean coast last year to disrupt a Ukrainian sneak attack on the Russian naval fleet...”
"As Ukrainian submarine drones strapped with explosives approached the Russian fleet, they “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly,” Isaacson writes."

Why not give following James Gleick @58fbd252 a shot?
He's super smart, insightful and often very funny. He posts about politics, but also a wide range of interesting subjects. James might be a really good addition to your Mastodon experience.
#follow #USPolitics #information #perspective
Well in their infinite stupidity the US government has granted Elon Musk's SpaceX permission to launch thousands of Starlink satellites into low earth orbit (LEO). These things are wizzing around up there trying to avoid crashing into one another, and with each new batch that becomes harder. Plus now the Chinese and Amazon are sending up their own satellite constellations. It's a massive traffic problem.
