@aa934f59 I wasn't asking for advice on finding news. I know how to do that. I find it regrettable that discussion and dissemination of breaking news and official announcements isn't more prevalent here. That's all.
@69383c1b In fact, if you call it Mastodon, you get people "correcting" you that you should say "fediverse" in exactly the "I believe you mean GNU/Linux" tone.
@7faadb2b Looks like a strobed display, in which the lights have a duty cycle shorter than the shutter/capture speed of your phone. You'll often see the same effect in, e.g, LED information displays in train stations.
I've been essentially off Twitter for almost a year now, and Mastodon has become an increasingly rich, diverse replacement. Many of the gaps that were here a year ago are filling in.
I still miss the extensive breaking news coverage and official government and org accounts I remember from Twitter.
When I've mentioned this in the past, zealots here have suggested I shouldn't want those things and that they'd somehow ruin this "community".
I disagree. We can have those things without Nazis.
Recent discovery: I've long observed that there's a huge, disproportionate price difference between consumer-level and pro-grade still photography equipment, but that didn't even remotely prepare me for the same difference in the pricing of consumer vs pro cinema gear.
Even very well off still photographers have budgets far lower than feature film productions, and the market definitely reflects that.
Those of you who stopped by the Village in person no doubt were frustrated by the poor acoustics and ambient noise level in the room, but the videos have much better sound.
The natural inclination of security people focuses on failures and risks, so it's important to occasionally step back and celebrate our successes. And election security is an area where we do have things to celebrate!
