I've been essentially off Twitter for almost a year now, and Mastodon has become an increasingly rich, diverse replacement. Many of the gaps that were here a year ago are filling in.

I still miss the extensive breaking news coverage and official government and org accounts I remember from Twitter.

When I've mentioned this in the past, zealots here have suggested I shouldn't want those things and that they'd somehow ruin this "community".

I disagree. We can have those things without Nazis.
@f1c6c5c3 Hey, I'm very sorry but it is called "Fediverse", not "Mastodon". The fediverse is practically the platform you're using, and Mastodon is the frontend/client you are using.

Why that? Well... Mastodon is not the only server software communicating over the ActivityPub protocol (which the Fediverse is using). There is Firefish or Akkoma for example, which are microblogging servers too. But there is Pixelfed for image sharing and even PeerTube for videos, and there's so much more out there.

In simple(r) terms:
Mastodon is the server software, and is not the only one out there. The Fediverse is the actual platform.
You're free to disagree and want other things. Personally, what I want is basically Twitter, but without the Nazis.
@f1c6c5c3 Someone described Mastodon as "social networking for people who have a preferred Linux distribution" and for people who don't fall into that descriptor, it remains really, really inaccessible. Even if they actively want to NOT use Twitter anymore because of what it's become, they still NEED to use it because it fills gaps Mastodon won't or can't (largely because of the benign network effect of getting libraries, meteorologists, municipalities, etc. to move collectively)

I wish I could cite who described Mastodon in that way, but... you can't search for something like that. :/
@f1c6c5c3 have a peek at the sources you miss's websites and see if they have rss feeds. I'd they do they can setup a Mastodon bot super easy if you ask them or you can do it yourself.
@f1c6c5c3 @fd87413d “News Without Nazis.” I like it.
