Just a quick reminder. If you're using the Internet, you are leaking your IP address to any server or network administrator. Nostr is no different. Assholes exist everywhere. Any asshole can leak your IP. If this concerns you, use a VPN.
How often do I need to refill my IP?
This depends on your ISP.
"if assholes concern you, use protection." 🫡
I like it.
Unless a vpn provider is an arsehole then use tor. Unless tor nodes belong to Cloudflare and they are arseholes.
Do you know of a way to pay for @Mullvad VPN using Lightning? I know they accept on chain but I’m concerned about building dependence and then on chain fees spike.
I do and have used it a few times: https://vpn.sovereign.engineering
There is also #Tor, #i2p, #proxies etc..👏👍😊
Or neighbours wifi 😆
ppl have been brainwashed by advertising companies into needing a VPN, why trust and pay a 3rd party company on the other side of the planet with all of my internet traffic? when there are better solutions for maintaining privacy.
You don't have to pay and trust a third party. You can host your own VPN solution. It's not hard.
@Derek Ross best resource for doing that. What’s not hard for some can be very challenging for others. Looking at me here
This would be the easiest for self-hosted https://getoutline.org/
Don't sell yourself so short here. I've seen you do some great stuff, Bevo. Here's a quick and dirty guide. Buy a virtual private server from a provider with bitcoin. Choose to install Ubuntu. Google how to setup a Wireguard VPN on Ubuntu. Do that. Install a Wireguard VPN client on your phone. That's it!
An you DEFO don't want a leaky asshole , so , just add that to the whole thing .
Confirmed.
just used NORD & no feed showed up but could still post
I haven't touched the internet without a VPN in about a decade... I hear people still smear feces on their butt cheeks using paper too...
Not everyone is brown pilled.
Unfortunately VPNs have proven problematic with apps for work. On this topic shouldn’t the Nostr protocol give users the option to delete anything and force it across all relays…not make a deletion request discretionary? Seems like a bug…not a feature.
The Nostr protocol is composed of relays that can comply with certain features or not. You can’t guarantee that even if you “force” my relay to delete my content that I am not storing a backup. Guarantee none of the centralized services are actually deleting your data fully either. You really have to assume that whatever you put out there is going to be somewhere. As for VPNs and work apps, some VPNs have a split tunnel or exception feature that allows certain network traffic to not go over VPN. protonVPN has this (I think just PC version, will have to check).
Heh. Work apps not liking a VPN is foreign to me since I have to use a VPN to even connect to my work apps 🤣
Same here. Does seem some SaaS platforms don’t like the known list of VPN IP addresses out there. I know zoom was being an asshole to me in my previous fiat mining assignment when I had protonVPN up.
So are DMs actually encrypted from relays holders?
Yes, NIP-04 DMs, only the recipient can read the DM. relay holders (and everyone else) can see who you’re messaging through.
Unless your using a client that supports and uses NIP-44 for DMs then no one can see who you're messaging.
One more question. Using Primal exclusively now. However, it appears to keep purging all of my Follows. It's happened 4x. Is this a client issue or something that could be manipulated in the protocol by a node?
DM content is encrypted. If you want your DM metadata to be private too, you'll need to use a client that supports that such as Amethyst, Snort, Iris, or Coracle.
VPNs are another problem. Now they have data on all users who want privacy. If I was government, I would get their logs or even set up my own providers to spy on users
Mullvad was raided and asked to provide user data. They couldn't comply because they have zero user data.
Where and by whom?
Let me Google it for you. https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/21/23692580/mullvad-vpn-raid-sweden-police
Mullvand is located in Sweden. Swedish police can lawfully hack devices. Do not relay on any services located in Sweden when it comes to privacy or security.
"Crypto AG rejected these accusations as "pure invention", asserting in a press release that "in March 1994, the Swiss Federal Prosecutor's Office initiated a wide-ranging preliminary investigation against Crypto AG, which was completed in 1997. The accusations regarding influence by third parties or manipulations, which had been repeatedly raised in the media, proved to be without foundation.""
Get a VPN from a Bitcoin-friendly provider. Mullvad is based af. Get a Mullvad account and share it with your friends, you can register up to 5 devices.
Don't use a VPN. Please read this: A) https://overengineer.dev/blog/2019/04/08/very-precarious-narrative.html B) https://gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29 If you want to hide your IP Address use Tor instead.
