Is it really true that Bluesky has better marketing than Nostr and is a better product than Nostr and that's why it has more users? Or is only big like that because it has received consistent and relentless praise and free corporate media boostings since day one -- always, to this day, with a big picture of Jack on the side (even though Jack has never been much involved and then cut his ties with them completely) and the word "decentralized" in big letters (even though it isn't decentralized and can never be). Sure, there are other factors, probably many others, but to ignore this part -- about which we don't have any control -- is not going to lead to a good understanding of our situation and of what we should do. nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzq0fw29ggdx0e3u8jhkl853dkw0rg0lnyyr6xdhpfdkgtjzx4r4v5qy08wumn8ghj7mmv09khq6trwverqv359ehx7uewwdhkx6tpdshszxrhwden5te0dehhxarjv4sk6tn0vd5xztn0dejj7qgmwaehxw309ahx7um5wgh8qmmzvfkx2mrpvfejummjvuhszynhwden5te0dehhxarjd9kzucmpd5hsz8rhwden5te0dehhxarjxyh8gatwdejkcumpw3ejucm0d5hsqgr8ve2jdffu98h0c2ptl29guu3l4acmnnzj7wfy97pts3ewa8ulgy4vnyqx
This is the nature of the game. Those that align with the establishment will always be better funded, more popular, highly praised, shielded from risk, spared from failure. But they will also never have the freedom to oppose the establishment. How's their payment mechanism going? They took Bitcoin VC, and also refuse to actually use Bitcoin. "In war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak." > The Series A funding round was led by Blockchain Capital, a venture firm that has invested in OpenSea, Kraken, and Coinbase. Several other crypto-related venture firms—including SevenX, True Ventures and Alumni Ventures—participated in the funding round, as well. > Nonetheless, the social media startup vowed that it would not “hyperfinancialize” the Bluesky “social experience” by integrating crypto tokens, NFTs, or other blockchain-based technology into its platform.
What? Nostr is incredibly well-funded, just largely not building for social and not doing innovative stuff there anymore.
I'm not trying to take sides, though I have my preferences. I've always been a fan of startups, and money shapes the landscape. Who, how much, structures, valuations: they drive decisions both short and long term. Knowing where the next round will come from is always on your mind. Bluesky has raised more than twice what has been attributed to nostr. They also benefit from friendly publicity. These things make certain things very easy for them. They also have traditional business structures, and relationships with VC. These constrain what they are able to do. It currently appears that anything with Bitcoin is off the table. In periods of crisis, I expect even more control to be exerted. I'm not inherently vested in either of these. Nostr appeals to me for the same reasons that Jack talks about: there is no corporation, no debt or equity obligations, no points of leverage. I only ended up here after hacking on Mutiny, working directly with the protocol, and understanding what it allows. Most of the politics here are pretty silly if you ask me. But, freedom is the ability to make bad decisions. Counterintuitively this tends to focus people on making good ones. Without it you end up with endless mediocre ones that never move the needle, and you can be sure that others are moving their needle to grab as much land as possible. So, my advice is a modification of Lao Tzu: we shouldn't spend our time challenging them on publicity, moderation, consistency, or scalability. They will always win these things because they are centralized. We should spend our time on things that they will never be great at: availability, portability, interoperability, financialization. Can you post to Bluesky over a phone call? Can you memorize your identity? Can you run your own community relay without Internet access? Can you zap your favorite developers? Nostr will never "beat" Bluesky because they aren't even playing the same game. My view is that the game nostr is playing will become more important over time, and the one Bluesky is playing will erode, one crisis at a time. In the words of the unnamed zen master, we'll see.
Better marketing? It's simply become the anti-Elon spot du jour for all of the liberals that can't have discussions with anyone outside of their echo chambers. I just noted this little gem: https://primal.net/e/note1vpvw54ce3z7j46nreqnc2je7arwxlnsxxp5ru2hc2nqrphgkqy0q65nhtz
There’s likely a way to monetize it that isn’t available on Nostr. Also, lots of reporting and blocking going on. So, have to assume the leftists flocking there want their echo chamber.
bluesky is a product... nostr is not a product, it's just a mess of stuff there's no CEO of nostr even though some of these woke snowflake propagandists like Atlantic want to pin that on you, if you disappeared tomorrow nostr would keep ticking, it's a hydra bluesky could be shut down with one single organisation being attacked
Content content content. Bluesky has a massive liberal bias. So unless you’re that you won’t want to be there. NOSTR has a massive bitcoin, and developer bias. So if you’re not that then you won’t won’t to be there. Ask yourself how many people in the world care about those things, and if you care to broadcast your reach further. If you do then put lightning in the background, and diversify the content. If not that’s cool continue what’s your doing. For what it is currently it’s a successful grouping of those people. If you want more then ask what people want. Unfortunately that’s stupid cat videos, and not bit coin.
go find the VCs to pay for such a product and it can be made but literally there is nobody throwing that much money at nostr... i even do my own dev work as a hobby, a great deal of those who build for nostr are only being paid partially or very little or even nothing for it
Does anybody issue regular press releases about their Nostr stuff? (I really don't know, just trying to help brainstorm) I can't compare services. I won't try it. I signed up for early access & never got the green light. I assume that was because I was never very vocal on Twitter. That alone felt disingenuous to me.
I saw a post, recently, claiming that pro-palestine accounts were being deleted from bluesky as spam. If that's true, it would seem that a major effect of bluesky will be to give left/liberal people a feeling of safety so that they don't push back too hard as they are herded by the Zionist machine. Xitter for right wing, bluesky for left wing, but both of them ultimately serving Israel.
lol what? So we should learn nothing from the cool stuff others have built because they got some good PR? Come on, that’s absurd. Also, users don’t choose to use a product just because it got a few mainstream press stickers, they certainly don’t stick around because of it.
Most users flock to and put up with a whole lotta shit on social media because their friends on on it. So I 100% do not agree with this. It's not some PR. It's been mentioned everywhere, and celebrities have said they areoving to it. Google trends for it is through the roof since the election.
But most of the articles are *about* how people are moving. You’re confusing cause and effect :)
Yes. An article says X is moving there. Say don lemon or whoever. 35k people see that, talk with some friends, now it's 50k people. 1k people go sign up and then post on x or IG or threads. An article about 1 person going there draws a thousand or more new signups. I've been in news media and marketing my whole career life. 25 years now I am not confusing anything.
Yea it perpetuates a movement, but articles talking about how there’s 1M users or whatever come after the 1M users….there was relatively little coverage between when they launched and a month or two ago, during which time they got 1M users. Blaming “the media” for losing users to competition is so lazy.
Most of the articles are about liberals leaving Twitter. Also, they are typical click bait pay per view stories on Forbes, fortune, BuzzFeed trash. But I'm not sure why anyone on NOSTR cares, personally. It isn't a competition, it is about more freedom, and the nostr protocol is the better choice at the moment.
Bluesky is an app that runs in on the AT protocol. Nostr is a protocol. People can’t go to an App Store and download Nostr. The apps need to market themselves. Marketing the protocol simply gets you more developers. There are other factors related to branding that are not helping Nostr, but starting with the apps instead of the protocol goes a long way.
#Bluesky is twitter wannabe .. all the vague and woke people obviously go there - no surprise .. #Twitter in itself was a failure - absolutely no traction for common people .. Even though I have tremendous respect for Jack but that doesn't change the facts .. Zuck beat the shit out of twitter not once - three times (with FB , Insta and Whatsapp) ... I know people here may not like this but it is a data based truth .. The goal of #nostr is still iunclear .. people are trying to figure out what it stands for ... I am attracted to #nostr cuz I feel it is natural extension of #bitcoin .. if #btc is #gold then #nostr is the market place ... many others beleive it is new inetrnet .. some think it is the content management system .. yet others feel it is the system of record ... Masses shall find #nostr only when it pivots to one aspect .. but the point is - there is no hurry to pivot .. there is no reason to crave for dumb users - at least early on ...
Nostr leads with decentralization - a term which an average person doesn't understand the meaning of, forget care about. A new user typically starts off with a blank feed or Trending feed that will most likely contain atleast 2 Bitcoin posts or global feed which is a wildcard. What's the incentive to stay on? Most social media are used for passive to moderately active consumption, which is difficult on Nostr 🤷♀️
