Alright, after watching 5+ hours of Dune part one and two, I’m going to need someone to explain to me why this is a good movie. Whatever other people are seeing, I am not seeing it.
I get you so much right now.
You must be a Lord of the Rings maximalist 🫂
Saw the first one. Dunno if I’m up for the second one.
Same
I agree with you @LynAlden. I didn’t like it either.
Is prelude to a Shakespearean tragedy where we all get to be complicit and the second film let’s the cast or of the bag prematurely, so yeah I think I agree with you.
😁
If you don’t believe me or don’t get it I don’t have the time to try to convince you, sorry 😂 Jk I haven’t read the books, but I thought the world was really well fleshed out, they dived a lot into the religion of the world which made it feel grounded, some of the action set pieces were spectacular, it was very well acted especially how Paul atreides transitions in dune 2. I was completely hooked into the hero’s journey. Feyd-Rautha was fla formidable villain, something I haven’t seen in a movie in ages. But hey, movies are a subjective experience so it is understandable, I didn’t like the first dune a lot either, thought it dragged.
i found the first one to be a great theatre experience, the second one lost its visual awe a bit since it wasnt new but still decent. the story is very dumbed down compared to books but i understand they had to make compromises. so, part 1 is a good movie if seen in theatres..especially for one that has read the book and just wants to see a cinematically impressive interpretation of the world 🤙
Did you watch on imax ?
Maybe you gotta be into the books. They did a good job according to the book lovers, which is rare. A lot of stuff had to be left out but they absolutely nailed the look and feel. Also, the stayed extremely close to the story as written.
I get the feeling you would like the books. The author builds the world by explaining all the "macro". It's not too late either. The two movies cover just the first book out of like seven. "God Emperor " is my favorite, it's the fourth one.
Really? Have you ever tried the books?
It's imaginative with well-developed cultures stemming from an understanding of problems that we experience today or will likely experience in the future. Unfortunately, cultural beliefs and thousand year ulterior motives don't translate well to film, so much of this is lost when watching the beautiful scenes of Timothy Chalemet. A fun dive into the cultural interplay and hidden motives is this video, revealing just how complex and interesting the future world of dune is: https://youtu.be/R0krUthYxF4?feature=shared
The 2000 miniseries was great. 4-5 hours, bad special effects but I loved it. Story line and all.
They're trash movies.
I enjoyed both of them. Thought the second one was great. 😬 Villeneuve won me over with BladeRunner 2049 so I’m kind of partial to whatever he does. Besides that though, I thought they were entertaining films.
Have not see 2 yet but did read the books when I was younger. The first movie could have explained the beginning of the series better. The Dune series is fantastic imo. It has many deep and well thought out themes involving religion, power struggles and the control of resources. It takes place far in the future after humans had a war with intelligent systems and what remains is a currency called spice and few groups or federation in control. In this new future humans have outlawed intelligent systems and reverted back to a feudal government and most normal folks mine spice. the control over spice is the most coveted commodity because it powers travel in this fictitious universe and also when spice is consumed by humans it is akin to drug use.
I liked them but I also read the book.
Maybe, good for wasting time. I didn’t watch it anyways.
Huge fan of the books, read all of them. I actually find the 2nd trilogy more interesting. Anyway… first movie had a great start then got very boring. I fell asleep on 2 attempts at Dune 1 both times it was after they escaped… still looking forward to the 2nd one I had high hopes.
For me Dune gives a feeling of being a kid in a candy shop again. It’s the prequel of the command and conquer series (most know for red alert) by Westwood studios. As a young kid it was the first game I couldn’t stop playing against ever more and stronger computer opponents. The storyline in the game with the different houses is also quite nice. For me it goes back to this computer game I really loved. https://m.primal.net/HpAK.jpg
I haven’t seen either film, but I’ve had so, so many moments watching movies like this with friends who don’t understand what Art actually is. But more important is to recognize that “Hollywood” is absolutely a propaganda industry casting a spell of hypnosis over people. I don’t say this as a hater, and in total sincerity I’m an Artist who recognizes great Art when I see it…but still, as a Bitcoiner: once you see the workings of a thing, you only see it. Yet you can’t discuss it, because the people we love LOVE living in the ‘suggestion’ and don’t wish to get out. So I guess we abide. And hope. And wait. “Dune” is the least of your problems, obv. Wait until your children begin to argue with you about how Bitcoin is damaging the climate….
suck my dickhttps://m.primal.net/HpAY.jpg
I understand what you mean. Denis Villeneuve isn't for everyone. He puts a lot of emphasis on visual storytelling over pacing. I'm only partially okay with that style. I loved the narrative about power corrupting even those who seem incorruptible. That alone made it a worthwhile watch.
thank you!! finally someone says it. it's cliché, full of plot holes and tries so hard to impress with visuals that are just corny and stupid. It's more like a modern Leni Riefenstahl movie than anything else.
How do you make that comparison?
I would say that movies, especially the second one, are implemented well technically, including cinematography, using multiple visual styles, representing scale of the conflict, world building, etc. I would also add that the pacing was great in the second one. This is all in addition to the timeless story of Dune, as a meditation on power, heroes, and other themes that Herbert explored in the books.

😀 IMO DELIGHT FOR FANTASTIC, ADVENTURE MOVIES ARE CONNECTED WITH GENERATION AND AGE. IN MY CASE, FOR AN EXAMPLE: - I WASN'T TOO IMPRESSED BY - STAR TREK - I WASN'T TOO IMPRESSED BY - STAR WARS - I ABSOLUTELY ADMIRE AND LOVE - THE MATRIX, AND NEXT - I WASN'T TOO IMPRESSED BY - THE LORD OF THE RINGS - I WASN'T TOO IMPRESSED BY - DUNE (...) BUT I LIKE GOING TO THE CINEMA AND I GIVE DUNE A SOLID 7 ON A SCALE OF 1-10. A REALLY COOL STORY AND GOOD MOVIE. (...) ALSO, HANS ZIMMER. 🔥
The book was so prescient for 1965. Read the book, then the 5 sequels. Frank Herbert built a rich universe, many ideas became reality.
Havent seen the movies but IMO the first book was okay and then went downhill... i stopped after the 4th
Going to watch it now! My last show was "Better call Saul" 🔫Bang 🔫Bang = 🗣️Hooooo
Its original intention is to serve as a powerful cautionary tale about the perils of unchecked ambition and the corrupting nature of power. Through Paul's story, Herbert warns readers about the dangers of blindly following charismatic leaders, the importance of understanding the delicate balance of ecosystems, and the potential for even the most well-intentioned individuals to be consumed by their own power. Ultimately, Dune serves as a reminder that the path to hell is often paved with good intentions and that the pursuit of power can lead to devastating consequences for both individuals and entire civilizations. I am a big fan of the world/ecology building but the storyline itself makes my stomach churn. The movie made my stomach churn a lot more than the book, as numbers don't translate as well as movies with soundtracks do :)
It’s great books and trashy movies. The philosophical depth and character development thats oh so rich in the books is skipped in the movies, so i can not imagine that the films would make any sence without reading books.. I’m sorry for your wasted time, it’s just hype for hypes sake…
Lyn, please FHS, tell me that you watched them on a big screen in a theater ! I can’t explain you why this is a good movie (haven’t seen part 2 yet), but I can tell you that there are huge efforts put in being respectful to the books. Are you acquainted with the David Lynch version ? 💋
David Lynch is an odd bird. With Laura Dern? Recently tried to watch ‘Inland Empire,’ too weird for me being a bit pedestrian. https://www.criterionchannel.com/inland-empire Must be an acquired … nah.
What is this criterion channel ? Must need a vpn because it doesn’t work in Japan.
‘The Criterion Collection’ is great number of mostly classic but including a few contemporary films for purchase that are deemed significant culturally, artistically or historically.
Thanks for the explanation, that’s great, I had never heard of it ! Their collection is amazing.
The books sukkdikk, I couldn't get into them
It's the mix between the movie and the book... the movie alone does not cut it.
Haven’t seen second one yet but I would summarize it as a relatively good adaptation of the book to film, but it still suffers from the usual big movie problems of okay acting and over dramatization. It’s watchable and fun enough for me, but I probably wouldn’t watch it again
I take it you’re not a fan of sand.
Spice-y take.
I must not fiat. Fiat is the mind-killer. Fiat is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
Have not seen latest Dune will pass on current. In the original there were a number of solid character examples: the value of heritage and cultivation of heirs, driving to goals, overcoming fear, good over evil, not deviating from mission, etc. Same messages in numerous movies. To save time with less muddled messages I recommend ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ , ‘Braveheart’ or any future screen play by Lyn Alden.
I felt the same way after reading the book.
So like, imagine water is bitcoin - There's a fixed supply of water on Arrakis - The Harkonnens are wasteful (very fiat) - The Fremen are thrifty (check out those Stillsuits!) There's a whole thing in the book about how the Fremen are saving all the water (decaliters upon decaliters) to eventually transform the planet Anyhow yeah if you go to the book and DYOR the whole Dune fit with bitcoin = water will jump out at you!
me neither
Lyn I recommend you watch this documentary about the best Dune movie never made. The Jodorowsky's Dune. https://www.amazon.com/Jodorowskys-Dune-Chris-Foss/dp/B00KRIYI3K
Here is the trailer in Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0cJNR8HEw0
Book beats movie every time. However, the cinematography and sound in the movies is epic. The sense of scale is incredible and the contrast sounds between planetary scale objects vs dust trickling over the dunes in quite is just amazing.
What don't you like about it?
Have you read the book? A lot of this really boils down to those who read the book hoping some human has the ability to bring it to life in a way that not only respects the book but respects that people really want to see the thing they read about. This is the third attempt to bring Dune to life and it fails to do so and I thought this was the best attempt so far. David Lynch tried in the 80's and I liked it but it wasn't really Dune. SciFi did a 3 part mini series that included the 2nd and 3rd books (scant) in the series but . . . meh. It was way too ambitious. Now we have this latest attempt. As with the first two attempts many things in the book that gave the story the deep political, economic, and sociographic contexts had to be jettisoned because there is not enough production money and time available to do it the "right" way. One of these days someone will step up and knock that son of a bitch outta the park but I don't think it'll be very soon. I highly recommend reading the first 6 books in the series (I tried his son's attempts to further the series but I find them horrible). The sheer depth is eye watering. Dune Part 1 was pretty boring but beautiful. Dune Part 2 was fantastic: the costuming, cinematography, editing, sound design, score . . . it was bad ass BUT! without the full context it just can't be Dune: The Movie. Does this help?
It may be because they are better than the earlier version.

Although far from a masterpiece, I actually enjoyed the first one to be fair. Not desperate to watch the second but will definitely watch it.
In a nutshell, a proposed representation of the Hermetic principle of "As above so below".
a colossal representation not so impossible given massive technological advances
🤣 it’s like bitcoin. If you don’t see it you don’t see it and you continue living a poor life(just 🙃)
OMG same! I don't get the hype. I forgot I saw Dune 1, very forgettable.
Did you see the sand worm? I repeat did you? 😂 😝 #nostr
😭😭😭😭😭
Hey Lyn, maybe this Aubrey Marcus podcast can be helpful. Despite your critical observations, you seem to be intrigued at the same time. I remember when I read the books in my teens, I kept on reading although I didn't even understand half of it, haha. It's gloomy, yes. But there's deep beauty woven in and somehow it can be a revealing spiritual experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpZyiQIIHLI
It is the same thing as GOT, Soprano’s, Sports and all the other MUST WATCH shows and movies; Never seen either & don’t want to waste my time. Add to that the 100+ super hero movies and shows that are SO AWESOME. Yeah 100+ movies and shows of the same story line over & over. None of it ever appealed to me though, I saw them as pretty stupid, But others told me that Counterpart & Black Sails, Inception, Tenet. sucked. I enjoyed them. Three out of the four I just mentioned were original storylines that were not remakes or reboots of the same old crap. Dont get me started on the whole Star Wars & Star Trek universe; enough already.
