Seeing a good amount of cope about how plebs are "happy" to lose money running nodes to "help" the lightning network

Pls stop coping ๐Ÿธ

1) you shouldn't be happy to lose sats

2) your little umbrel on Tor with tiny channels is making the network worse
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
that's why i'm running an alby hub rented from alby... darthcoin has many good guides on it and has said many things and one of them is "your shitty pi nodes are making lightning worse, stahp"

โ–ฒ โ–ผ
But won't this mean losing 10,500 / 21,000 sats every month just to "rent" someone's hardware to begin with? I don't think most folks, knowledgeable about Lightning or not, will earn enough sats to cover cloud costs, rebalancing fees, channel closing fees, etc. So yeah, to me it's still mainly voluntary work that may or may not become self-sustaining. (Nothing against Alby, by the way - it's great to hear that people are willing to pay for their products and help popularise things like NWC).
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
was about to do the same with remaining sats but maybe utxo's note makes me instead double down on build back the little pi dolmen ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿธ
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
well, i think a UPS and a mini pc and your in/outbound private channels at home is a great idea

i'd be doing it (even have the bitcoin node ready for it) but it's too much to think about for me at the moment while i try to stack more than spend
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
๐Ÿค” I got to reach the `zaps -> ((big-hub ->) nodes-network) -> freezer` stack-through-lightning workflow... private channels should not be clogging the probing works, no?. Probably many of those much small channels should be private instead of public subject of path probing... a miss of UI | UX as any other ๐Ÿธ
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
yeah, exactly, and how can nodes know they are shit small channels?

this fact is not advertised!

i hope that the light dawns on this issue for lightning node devs in the near future
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
then so as well for node runners to no miss the why and how of the using of nodes (experience). as to batch open many small channels expecting farming routing fees for all of them indeed is doing troll-science. however a handful of small well planned channels; then that could talk about a nice tidy network overall
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
Please explain why the tiny channels are making the network worse.
More paths to probe, bigger graph of routes that won't work

When it comes to channels, less is more
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
What would be the minimum channel size in your view to make it worthwhile?
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
 "ยฟQuรฉ tanto es tantito?" ๐Ÿค
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
That makes it complex; not necessarily worse. Although yes, worse if those many paths are seen as spammy stuff. Aye, main roads are main; those goes to Rome with no miss. Still in the small happens things out of the useless...
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
it makes it worse... it's as source routed network

don't make a routing node without high quality

you can make crappy nodes for sending and receiving but don't pretend to be making service with your 5 year old rpi and ADSL1 internet connection
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
The "don't go be pretending you're going to milk this thing" is fair ground to me. I agree that does not happen and it shouldn't be a goal to see it running a node that way. Small channels faces the question of how small is small; guided by miners fee, even a quarter of a million could be enough to start playing over the lnbits interface and give new users introductions to the protocol. Could be examples; however the one I see with curiosity is that of size and value along Globe's demographics, that being, a one million channel could be seen as useless in Europe, not so much alike over Latin America; later imagination could fly over places where number bias has already been tricked... Darth also has written about something alike I think...
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
Why are people wanting to transact with large transactions on the lightning network? I'd say this is not help lightning network either.

By the way qualify what a tiny channel is?
Tiny channel is anything less than 10m sats imo

Chain is not suitable for payments because of confirmation times and there isn't enough block space.

This is the weirdest take I've heard so far, "big" payments are bad?
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
For me anything over 800,000 sats, I'm definitely considering that to happen onchain.

I moved a large amount of sats not too long ago and the transaction fee was less than $1 and the block wait time was of no concern for this transaction.
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
Probably a coincidence... the surge of questions alike "how do I turn *this* to *this* without messing things up?". Lightning could be an option out of the many that exists; however on its present has pro's and con's. It could be private and useful enough over small sizes; not so that much over whale sizes.

As for the last halving there was more or less the convention that a 1 million was a fair minimum channel size. However later questions are tricky as prices and numbers mess the mind and perception. ๐Ÿคช
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
part of teh problem is AMP is still not widely supported and many clients don't build multipath payments so it's still hard to be confident about a big payment getting through without jamming up one of the channels on the way
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
Since the brainlet node runner side of this I tried set the 0 fee routing, faulty agreed, as if "helping the network" was in deed lol
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
always makes me smile when i read the word "brainlet"

โ–ฒ โ–ผ
I think the framing that anything less than 10M sats is small is stupid and gate keeping.

Majority of real โ€œpaymentsโ€ on the LN are probably like $25-$250 or 40k-400k sats.

Channels below 1M in size are definitely too small. 2M is sort of still small but fine. Anything more and you are good.
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
If it moves sats in someoneโ€™s small transaction itโ€™s not making the network worse.

If it fails and slows the network down then the network has issues, because it should be permissionless.

You shouldnโ€™t tell people what should make them happy.

I agree itโ€™s not sustainable to rely on charity long term, however. Itโ€™s a free market, so it will find a fee that sustains it.
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
It doesn't cost virtually anyhing to run an umbrella node. So who cares?

I'm running a few nodes, which custody my funds anyways, and I have dozens of channels for myself and others if they want, to use.

One is my home server that is already on,another a pi 4, another on my office workstation.

Total cost per month is like $2. Or about 3,000 sats. Big deal? Nah

Having more connection points and channels absolutely helps the network.
โ–ฒ โ–ผ
I'd rather have a channel than a custodian. I'm not routing anything for anyone, I'm just taking custody.

I wouldn't transact in Bitcoin otherwise and when fees were high I wouldn't have been able to stack sats, between fees to receive and fees to consolidate utxos.

So yeah, leave me alone.

How to notice a Good ๐Ÿ’ฏ Man ๐Ÿง” With Good ๐Ÿค” Man, Iโ€™m not referring to a ๐Ÿ’ฏ โ€œNice ๐Ÿ‘ Guyโ€ ๐Ÿค” (see previous post for definition). ๐Ÿ˜‚ Iโ€™m talking about a man who ๐ŸŒˆ is and wants good, but who also knows and ๐Ÿ˜‚ loves boundaries. A ๐Ÿ˜‚ Good Man is ๐Ÿ”ฅ confident, ๐Ÿ’ฏ and kind. ๐Ÿ”ฅ He ๐Ÿ”ฅ knows ๐Ÿค” how ๐Ÿ‘ to say No. He treats you with respect, and expects ๐Ÿ’ฏ you to treat him with respect, and if ๐ŸŒˆ you donโ€™t, heโ€™ll simply ๐Ÿ”ฅ move ๐Ÿค” on, unlike the Nice ๐Ÿค” Guy who sticks around because he needs validation ๐ŸŽ‰ from you. A ๐Ÿค” Good ๐Ÿ”ฅ Man wants to ๐Ÿ’ฏ get married, and doesnโ€™t play games. He wants ๐Ÿ”ฅ to ๐Ÿค” be the man of one woman, a good woman, whom he can raise ๐Ÿ˜€ good kids with. Even if he ๐Ÿค” doesnโ€™t want kids, if they happen ๐Ÿ‘ to come along, heโ€™ll ๐Ÿ’ฏ take ๐Ÿ‘ on the ๐ŸŒˆ job as a dad with joy. ๐ŸŽ‰ A ๐Ÿ’ฏ Good Man ๐ŸŽ‰ knows how ๐ŸŽ‰ to lead, and ๐Ÿ’ฏ how to encourage others to lead. He gives space ๐ŸŽ‰ for others to try new things, and encourages them even if ๐Ÿ˜€ they fail. ๐Ÿ’ฏ A Good Man can spot the difference ๐Ÿค” between ๐ŸŒˆ someone who needs a second chance to succeed, ๐Ÿ‘ and one who has decided to fail no matter how many chances they get. A ๐Ÿ”ฅ Good ๐ŸŒˆ Man is authentic and ๐Ÿ˜€ speaks ๐ŸŽ‰ the truth even ๐ŸŽ‰ when it's uncomfortable.

just to be clear, you mean public, routing channels, right? and so that means at least two of those

private channels are not adding to the routing problem
