Why do fancy restaurants fill their meals with junk oils, sugars, chemical preservatives, and worse?

With rampant food inflation and razor thin margins, even the fanciest, most exclusive and expensive restaurants can’t resist the tendency to cut corners on ingredient quality.

That means that no matter how much you spend on eating out - with few exceptions - you’re still getting shockingly low-quality food.

So how do high profile celebrities and the rich and famous achieve such dramatic transformations?

And are regular Joes and Janes like us actually better off without private chefs and nutritionists?

Today we’re here with celebrity chef and entrepreneur, James Barry.

Chef James Barry’s 20 years in the field started as a private chef cooking for billionaires, musicians, and celebrities, including Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, and John Cusack, to name a few. But it was becoming a father that forced him to go deeper in his exploration of functional food.

As the Founder of Pluck, Chef James is the creator of a unique organ-based superfood seasoning that can be sprinkled on foods for a tasty kick that packs the nutritional punch of grass-fed liver, kidney, spleen, heart and pancreas along with organic spices.

In this episode, you’ll hear why the food served at fancy, expensive restaurants is so often terrible for our health, how to encourage picky eaters to become more adventurous by expanding their palate, the unexpected challenges and downsides of relying on external experts like private chefs and nutritionists, and much more.

Drop a line and let us know what you think!

What’s the difference between education and indoctrination?

Is our education system broken, or is it operating as intended?

The public school conveyor belt is a relic of the Prussian military model, designed to produce compliant workers for factories rather than sovereign thinkers with upward mobility.

We’re left with a blindly obedient population that’s smart enough to follow orders, but not smart or courageous enough to question the status quo.

The masses are conditioned to become habitually compliant conformists forever reliant on external authority.

As Seth Godin writes, “To efficiently run a school, amplify fear (and destroy passion).”

These days, educators have limited intellectual freedom to teach what they want to teach.

In past decades, we had far less access to information or schooling, yet were far more educated.

Now in the age of AI, we have access to unlimited information, but we don’t know if any of it is real or true.

So what is the future of education?

Our guest today is Matt Beaudreau, a former public school educator and administrator who has dedicated his career to rethinking the very foundations of our education system.

Matt shares: “When I saw this system for what it was, I could no longer be a part of perpetuating it.”

As founder of the Apogee Strong mentorship program, Matt has an unwavering commitment to empowering young people to become sovereign, self-directed learners - a radical departure from the compliance-driven model that dominates our schools.

True education should foster creativity and critical thinking, allowing individuals to pursue their unique passions. Matt’s belief, which I share, is that genius is common, and true learning is about unlocking the innate genius in every one of us.

In this episode, you’ll discover how to unshackle your mind from the limits of traditional schooling and cultural conditioning, the status games played by elite institutions, how to utilize passion as a vehicle to learn how to learn, and much more.

 Hey #nostriches

Is your work aligned with your true calling in life?

Or are you being paid to overlook your overwhelming disinterest in the work?

Is your work-life driven by an illusion where the trivial is disguised as important?

Paul admits, “I spent 10 years doing an enormous amount of work but feeling as if I created nothing of substance.”

Most of us know the feeling, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

In other words, work doesn’t have to suck.

Today, I'm thrilled to have my friend and fellow Austinite, Paul Millerd joining us on the show.

Paul is a fellow former corporate consultant who has spent the past 7 years blazing an unconventional trail, leaving the rat race behind to pursue a life of creativity, curiosity, and freedom as an independent author and creator.

If you’re looking to reclaim your inner ambition, as Paul writes: “The only true and worthwhile edge is deeply caring about what you do.”

The real journey isn’t in indulging our desire to escape work, but in finding meaningful work that is true to our mission and purpose here on earth.

In this conversation, Paul shares the uncertainty and loneliness of leaving a successful consulting career, to the unexpected joys and challenges of building a life around his curiosity and passions. We'll dive into the frameworks he's developed for discerning "good work" from "bad work," and how he's navigated the ebb and flow of creative entrepreneurship, including the decision to turn down a lucrative publishing deal.

Whether you're feeling trapped in a soul-sucking job, or simply curious about what's possible when you break free of societal scripts, you're going to find an abundance of wisdom and inspiration in Paul's story.

What does the concept of longevity mean to you?

Does it mean pumping your body full of exogenous hormones, peptides, stem cells, brain implants, and gradually replacing your organs with lab-grown pig parts?

Perhaps some of us will sign up to be a brain in a jar?

Or can we cruise into our second century by living a simple life of self-reflection, meditating deep in the mountains?

After all, in remote corners of the world, there are legends of yogis and spiritual masters living so long that their true age is forgotten to time.

Indeed, there are many paths on the road to a long life. In the years ahead, the bifurcation between devout transhumanists on a quest to live forever and those who prefer a more natural approach to aging will become more and more obvious.

Today I’m honored to be joined by our friend Mark Divine, a former Navy SEAL commander, entrepreneur, New York Times bestselling author, and renowned expert in personal transformation, mindfulness, and the untapped potential of the human mind.

In this expansive conversation, we explore the transformative power of silence and self-reflection, the intricate dance between the ego and attachment, as well as extraordinary feats of consciousness, healing and longevity documented in Eastern spiritual traditions.

In this episode, you’ll discover how to break free from the conditioning and limiting beliefs that lead many of us to a "common" life of quiet desperation, powerful practices to master the mind’s energy by combining Eastern wisdom and Western science, how to redefine your relationship with reality to unlock your full potential, and much more…

Sit back, open your mind, and this conversation might just change the way you see the world.

First time diving into using Fountain for podcasts. Liking it so far.
 Fountain is awesome
When you know what you’re supposed to do, what keeps you from actually doing it?

We’re all guilty at times of procrastination, pleasure-seeking, indulging in distraction and escapism, and even self-sabotage.

Perhaps it’s all part of the human condition.

But since knowing what to do is different from actually doing it, it’s essential to set up systems in our lives to make healthy choices the default option.

And sometimes we need a little help getting out of our own way.

By helping you work through the subconscious emotional blocks that prevent you from taking positive action, finding the right coach and accountability partner can make a massive difference in your long term results.

As today’s guest quips, "I can't help people solve their problems until I find out why they like having them."

Today we’re here with our friend, Adam Gilbert, founder of MyBodyTutor.

Whether you're a seasoned athlete, busy parent, coach, or just dipping your toes into health and fitness, you'll walk away with actionable strategies and a renewed sense of motivation to make positive and lasting changes in your life.

Have you heard that eating animal protein causes cancer?

Or that you’ll save the world if you only give up hamburgers forever?

Despite dutifully reducing our consumption of animal protein for decades, rates of obesity and chronic disease have skyrocketed.

In the face of relentless anti-meat propaganda, what if the blanket advice to follow strict plant based diets is actually accelerating rates of obesity and disease?

When I gave up meat as a young athlete for the sake of health and the environment, my results were abysmal. I lost muscle, gained fat, lacked energy, recovered poorly, and my race performance suffered.

Since plant-based fake meats and meat substitutes are incomplete proteins that are not well absorbed or utilized by our bodies, avoiding high-quality animal protein can lead to poor outcomes in health and performance for children and adults alike.

Meatless Mondays may sound virtuous, but they’re not saving the environment or solving the obesity epidemic as many are led to believe.

Indiscriminately blaming cattle for the sins of fossil fuels and industrial agriculture is a mistake. We all want to save the world, but as this week’s guest quips: “we can’t eat our way out of a climate crisis.”

Whether you’re raising animals or growing crops, industrial agriculture isn’t friendly to the environment or our health. Prioritizing the health of your body and the planet requires that we source real food according to the laws of nature, opting for regenerative agriculture and pasture-raised animals over the products of concentrated feedlots and industrial monocrops.

When it comes to health and performance, eating high quality protein from healthy animals is one of the most powerful weapons we have to fight obesity, muscle wasting, and premature aging.

Today we’re back with our friend Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, a New York Times Bestselling author, podcaster and functional medicine physician specializing in the concept of muscle-centric medicine, which focuses on the largest organ in the body, skeletal muscle, as the key to health and longevity.

In this episode with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, we chat about:

Why what we think of as aging is actually a disease of impaired muscle

The surprising relationship between meat, protein, and cancer

How society's focus on weight loss has led to neglect of muscle building, which is critical for overall health

The most effective exercises and training frequency to build skeletal muscle, optimize metabolism, and fight aging

And much more…

If you’re not happy all the time, do you feel like you have a problem?

No matter how much you achieve, does it feel like it’s never quite enough?

This is totally normal.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the pursuit of happiness, but it’s critical to understand that even in the best case scenario, happiness is fleeting. It’s not something we ever get to keep.

We’re conditioned to think that if we don’t feel happy, we’re failing at life. The traditional approach to addressing unhappiness is flawed, however, as it assumes we’re meant to live in some perfect state of perpetual bliss. But that doesn’t jive with biology or reality.

The truth is that our mammalian brains are wired for survival, not to feel happy all the time.

Feelings of happiness and achievement are short-lived, and it’s meant to be that way.

But by harnessing proven principles of brain science and evolutionary biology, you can use dissatisfaction, pain and discomfort to propel you to your next epic success.

Today we’re back with our friend, Loretta Breuning, PhD, author, Professor Emerita of Management at California State University, East Bay, and Founder of the Inner Mammal Institute.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

Why our brain's happy chemicals are only released in short spurts, and quickly habituate to rewards

How to untangle your emotional wiring by tracking down patterns from childhood

Why our natural "herd impulse" can lead to groupthink and the suppression of individuality (and how to counteract it)

Simple strategies to manage anxiety and fear

How to spark small joys and harness dopamine triggers in the brain’s reward system to create meaning and purpose in your life

And much more…

 Happy National Cheesecake Day #nostriches!

Ok, some "holidays" may be a bit of a stretch, but it’s hard not to indulge when there's an excuse to nom on cheesecake.

Made it back to Austin after an inspiring trip to #Nashville meeting up with folks at the forefront of new technology in music, media and podcasting.

And I’m thrilled Alyson whipped up such a tasty cheesecake creation, as there’s much to celebrate.

So don't waste cheesecake day on one of those store-bought monstrosities packed with high fructose corn syrup, wheat flour, artificial flavors, emulsifiers, industrial oils, GMOs and other grim nonsense.

Instead, enjoy a slice of this homemade cheesecake, made with real food and free of added chemicals. Top it off with fresh strawberries or blueberries to delight your tastebuds.

What an epic weekend in Nashville.

The energy, excitement, and innovation of this community reminds me of the early days of the internet in the best way possible.

Bands of Bitcoin and the @wavlake and @tunestr concerts were absolute highlights of the weekend.

Incredible to meet and hang with so many of the insanely talented OG musicians in this space - @Joe Martin 🎶🟠⚡ @Ainsley @justloud @The Higher Low @Sara Jade @aliciastockmanmusic, Martin, Andy, and many others - you all rock!

Perhaps what surprised and impressed me most about these musicians and builders was the lack of ego, creating a spirit of collaboration over competition.

This meeting of the minds might just change the trajectory of how we create and share music for years to come.

Leveraging technology to exchange value is a heck of a lot more fun and interesting than being exploited by centralized platforms in an algorithmic race to the bottom.

I started dipping my toes into Nostr and uploading tunes on Wavlake just a few short weeks ago, with little understanding and no expectations.

Now it’s clear that the paradigm is shifting rapidly, and incumbent platforms like Spotify could be rendered obsolete thanks to this motley crew of early adopters, artists, and builders.

Shout out to JL for inviting me up on stage for a spontaneous songwriting session. Jaw-dropping to see what you and your band came up with on the spot!

Jim and Julie, thank you for creating such an epic event, sharing my tunes on your podcast, and for inviting me to fill-in as guest MC for #bandsofbitcoin.

I was totally starstruck when the one-and-only podfather @adamcurry and @Dave Jones (accidentally) shared my cameo as guest MC from Bands of Bitcoin on the Podcasting 2.0 show!

questions are the most important currency we have
glad we can ask them here
Are we blaming red meat and butter for the problems vegetable oil caused?

Contrary to popular belief, there is no correlation between either saturated fat or animal fat and heart attacks.

Despite that fact, doctors learn that there is.

So why does the American Heart Association lie to doctors and the public about the true cause of heart disease?

All the way back in the 1950’s, Ancel Keys manipulated and falsified data to blame butter, red meat, and saturated fats for heart disease.

The American Heart Association has been misleading us about the cause of heart disease ever since.

This indoctrination of physicians, dietitians and the public enabled Big Oil and Big Food to flood the American diet with cheaply produced industrial vegetable and seed oils that alter our body chemistry in unfortunate and unnatural ways.

The very diet doctors recommend as healthy is making us sick.

Consuming industrial vegetable oils, like corn, canola, cottonseed, soy, sunflower, safflower, rice bran, and grapeseed oils disrupts cellular energy metabolism and leads to toxicity, oxidative stress and disease in the body.

Conversely, avoiding newfangled industrial junk oils and replacing them with traditional fats like butter, tallow, olive oil, and coconut oil can help restore metabolic health. This week’s guest is here to set the record straight.

Returning to the show today is our friend, the brilliant Cate Shanahan MD, one of the world’s leading authorities on nutrition and human metabolism. A board-certified Family Physician with over 20 years of clinical experience, and NY Times bestselling author, her expertise is fixing the underlying problems that cause metabolic damage and inflammation.

In this episode, you’ll discover why doctors working in the insurance-based system no longer have the freedom to do what they think is best for their patients, which oils are most damaging and what to use instead, the undisclosed conflict of interest between the vegetable oil industry and organized medicine, and much more…
