I finally have the misfortune of encountering windows 11. What a hot steaming pile of garbage.

Someone at microsoft needs to be told that consent applies to computers too. So much crap installed and reinstalled automatically no matter what you do. Things repin themselves to start after you unpin them. You click to uninstall garbage and it isn't in the installed apps. There is no way to get rid of the recommendations in the start menu, only allegedly how many of them, and they are closer to the start button than the stuff you pinned. Total user hostile UI disaster.

I really think that in the future if you want my help you have to be willing to switch to Ubuntu LTS. We both know all you use is the browser anyway.
I like Ubuntu because I have PTSD from the early rolling release distros like arch when it was new. Maybe it improved but back in the day you had to watch every update for breaking shit you had to do manually.

5 years standard support and 10 years security support with pro (free) and no release changes breaking things is very nice for stability and them not needing help from me for a long time.

I'll load up a mint VM to check it out and see how it compares.
Counterintuitive, but a longer leash. My last dog would always pull on a 6ft leash but at 15ft of lead he rarely pulled.
The only people I know who support any of these wars are hopelessly addicted to "the news"
Zombie movies are finally catching on that gasoline and diesel go bad.

They still treat batteries like magic eternal storage.

I think a lot about self discharge and cycle limits when thinking about my #hamradio equipment and emergency comms. Haven't thought of any great solution though.
Exhaustion as a status symbol. Grinding. Busyness. They’re all old energies. They’re not gett...
Grindset is everywhere in your algorithm because it is great for convincing wage slaves that if they bust their ass and make a few extra burgers or stack a few extra boxes they'll be the top 1% of productivity and get the full 25c an hour raise.

Creativity and outside the box thinking will serve YOU much better instead of serving your boss. They are far more likely to come from a walk in the woods than more grinding.

Ok, but hear me out. It isn't a real deathplug. Despite the red wire it is simply a ground link that allows me to extend ground from a good circuit into the bad circuit. The other prongs are not connected.

That will let me confirm my weak ground theory and make it safer to use the in ceiling lights that are on the faulty circuit while I work on finding the problem. They are the only lights in the office where I work from home.

I'm still alive and my theory is confirmed. Now I just need to go outlet by outlet in the circuit and find the problem.

For those that are curious what value #hamradio can provide in an emergency, here you can listen in without any special equipment.

Not that I know of but I'll share if I find one.
Is it a partially open ground or a partial short to hot? I shut off the breaker and tested continuity in an affected outlet, no continuity between any leads.

In that case, I could just run a new ground into the circuit and call it a day. I think I want to be sure I found the issue though. That might leave some things unfixed.

The circuit with the fault is on an extended ground. It was in a wire nut but corroded and loose looking. I took that apart, shined all 3 wires in the bundle, and put it back together with a wago.

No improvement.

Ocean with yet another underwelhming announcement. Datum is Stratum v2 but no e2ee and binary dat...
Ocean is really feeling like the swan of the mining space. More about the PR than the proof of work at their core business.
Everyone will tell you to run your own node.

My bitaxe costs less than my node and uses about the same amount of electricity. An s9 is even cheaper these days.

Mining is still seen as elite. It shouldn't be.

Currently doing both, mining is less hassle and costs less than running your own full LN node.

Hash because you are helping secure your savings not for a profit incentive. Once we fix that narrative and point people to entry level miners we can make progress distributing hash power.

Instead we keep telling everyone they need the biggest newest miner to profit or don't bother and the ones who buy an s21 will probably still lose at residential prices unless they are using the waste heat. Plus they are out millions of sats when they finally give up.
It isn't just my "desktop toy." It it's about changing the culture until everyone is running them to secure the network and not just for an immediate profit motive, the same way everyone should run a node. That will drive down profits and force some of those bigger players to shut down too.

Bigger hodlers should hash more, I just used the bitaxe as an entry level example.

If you have 1 bitcoin I think you should at least run a node and 1 bitaxe, minimum. How much per month should you be willing to spend to secure a larger stack?

It scales up from there. If you have 100 coins I think a much larger hashrate is appropriate. Any losses should be thought of as the recurring security cost of keeping your life savings secure.

That other security first coin some people like to bring up is hopelessly unprofitable to mine at any electric cost and any CPU efficiency. That is because everyone mines as a matter of course. Bitcoiners could take a lesson.

Mining isn't a thing you do for a profit motive. It is more of a civic duty, like picking up trash in the local park.
Were the PR campaign for more distributed civic mining instead of always for a profit motive, you and me and anyone else we can convince of the importance.

I'm pointing it out to you. I've posted on nostr about it before even doing the math for how much hash you need for your % of hash to equal your % of all coins held. I brought it up at the last in person meetup I went to.

The commercial miners won't ever stand up to the gov when the rubber hits the road, they are infrastructure dependant. It has to be distributed at the device level so the government simply has too many targets to effectively engage with forcing compliance.

Then the individuals can change pools at will or even solo from their own infrastructure like some of the people in meshtadel are working on.
I guess they finally realized that if I'm already running linux on my laptop I'm far more likely to run linux on my servers rather than switch OSes regularly in my workflow.

Honestly even Red Hat being ornery with licensing is enough to drive me away if it is my choice.

Meanwhile Ubuntu LTS is readily available in server and desktop form, runs great on my laptop, and Canonical gives me 5 free pro licenses for personal use.

That also means search results are full of Ubuntu fixes while Red Hat and BSD fixes are harder to find.
I couldn't help myself, officially nerd sniped. New breaker identified. This one also has 1 of 2 sump pumps, all of my basement ceiling lights, and my ONT on it.

Plot twist. I had the wrong breaker. I used a breaker finder and it was confident, only a single breaker beeped. I went over the entire panel multiple times and it always beeped on the same breaker.

I figured it out because after that last test I turned the breaker back off, walked back over to my meter and it still showed voltage.

I guess I'm back to step find the problem breaker. I had that false positive issue with the breaker finder before and the cause was the circuit being on a subpanel.

I'm done for now. More on this developing story tomorrow.

Nah, just a cheap ass circuit finder being worth what I paid for it. The new breaker I found more closely matches my memory of what was on the one breaker and it matches another mapping of some of my breakers I forgot I had done.
First step, the panel. Took a torque screwdriver through the panel tightening every ground and neutral with a wire on it.

I know you think you have a calibrated arm, YOU DO NOT. It is a wonder this is my only problem. I'm going to change shoes and do the hot wires later after what I just saw. I probably should have worn my insulated boots for the entire panel now that I think about it.

All tight now including confirming the specific ground for the faulty circuit. Tested, still voltage on ground at the outlet where I found the problem.

I guess that means I'll be opening up outlets and light fixtures. <s>Yay</s>

I just upgraded my home to have NSF53 rated filtering for all our drinking water and ice.
Is that your all day every day drinking container?
I have nsf 42 whole house filtering and drinking water and ice are both filtered to nsf 53 as of this morning.

We drink out of stainless double wall bottles all day every day and fill before leaving and take them with us for normal day to day time away from home.

When camping, we use a lifestraw dispenser. That is in a trailer, so the larger filter isn't an issue.

Lifestraw straws stashed in each vehicle, house, camper, and rucksack for emergencies.

Grayl looks cool but I don't regularly spend any time in a situation where I'm not covered by those other solutions.
Everyone knows about Michael Bay and explains.
Most even know about Tarantino and feet.

But I ...
I don't know about Bay and explains.

The other 2 I did know about. Nolan even decided that the batmobile was a bridge building vehicle.
 This I did know about.
I don't have time to watch all of every Michael Bay movie back to back right now but I'll save this link for later.
 Slashdot is still kicking?
Some people on nostr never got hit with a -1 disagree and it shows.
I tried a few of the forks, but it was never the same as the real thing before the collapse.
Do you mean a half and half?

"The term Black and Tan has a totally different connotation in Irish history. (fairly recent Irish history, at that) “Black and Tan” was the nickname given to the British paramilitary force “formed to suppress the Irish independence movement in 1920 and 1921.” They were mostly of ex-servicemen who’d served in World War I and they all wore khakis and dark shirts."

 I have shocking news.

Refresher on my electrifying #hamradio adventure. Last night I noticed, by getting shocked, a 60vac difference between my antenna feedline and #hf amp chassis. The voltage is on both the pin and shield, which is alarming.

Backstory, I disconnect my antenna and put a dummy load on my amp when not in use in case of thunderstorms. The dummy load is in case I'm a dummy and forget to reconnect next use so I don't blow my amp or radio up by transmitting into nothing. I got zapped when I attempted to reconnect my antenna feed, so this voltage exists on a feedline connected to nothing but my outdoor antenna and ground system.

Today I did more testing to try to find the problem.

Compared to my shack outlet, the voltage between the coax and ground is 60vac, between coax and neutral is 0vac and between coax and hot is 120vac. This looks like a big clue!

I ran an extension cord from another outlet so I could meter each wire to the shack outlet and compare. Ground on the shack outlet measured 60vac to all 3 wires on the other breaker.

That took me a minute. Then it clicked. They are both 110. The other outlet uses the other hot in the panel.

So the shack outlet has ground and neutral reversed somewhere. I switched to neutral on the shack outlet and it measures 0vac to the extension cord ground.

It was fine until you put chassis ground devices from different breakers next to each other. Or the antenna which has a dedicated ground rod outside for a true ground.

I had noticed touching my laptop on the shack outlet and s19 miner on a dedicated 220 outlet at the same time was no fun before, but the measured vac between them was low so I thought it was static from the fans on the miner.

This is what confuses me now. I had noticed voltage between the feedline and amp before but it was transient and low single digit voltages so I thought it was static or induced by a nearby AM station. How was a ground neutral reverse a sub 5v transient issue? Was my 8ft shack ground rod making a poor ground conductor somehow? We have had a fair amount of rain and a high water table lately that could explain the improvement last night.

Now for the bad news. Any older house I've worked on seems to have 90% of the house on 3 breakers and the rest of the house on a 1 breaker per 1 outlet or light policy. My shack outlet was on one of the 3 breakers that does everything (I know I know), so a large part of my house has this issue. Because any 2 chassis ground devices pose a threat, I have to fix the entire issue.

What say you #radio nerds and other #diy and #electrical wizards of nostr who actually read all that, how would you fix it? My nodes, shack, personal and work computers, lights for multiple rooms, and a wifi AP are all on that breaker so I can't shut it down for days and sort it out later.
Working through identifying outlets and moving things off the breaker with the issue. It is a 15a breaker. Just found one of the outlets is a 20a outlet.

 I don't get it.
The outlet the power supply is plugged in to tests fine. Where the hell is 55vac on my antenna feedline coming from?

Nope, I see the voltage between the cable shield and the outlet ground with the power supply completely removed from the picture.
55v AC between the chassis of my #hamradio power supply and my #hf feedline.

I did not have the luck to find it with a multimeter, that hurt.

Now I need to find a groundfault before I can continue my #js8call on #linux quest. I'm not even sure which one has the stray voltage on it yet.

Trying to get my xiegu x6100 #hamradio working with #js8call and #ft8 on Ubuntu #linux

Jtdx can cat and PTT but only when I use the R1CBU firmware. Good enough, I'll just use that firmware. Now I need to figure out my sound settings and I'm on the air.

TLDR, CUPS + bonjour was auto adding any printer advertised to it over mdns and not validating data coming from the printer. Spoof a printer advertisement and send malicious code. Tada, remote code execution as root.

Good to know it isn't even possible to have accidentally enabled CUPS on your start9 node.

I wanted to test and share because I know when the "imminent disclosure" first made the rounds on nostr people were warning that it may affect nodes. It wasn't known that it was a CUPS issue at that time.
