Hey! #Android fans. I think I've discovered a small bug in the #AOSP contacts app.
If you're running com.android.contacts 1.7.34, could you please create a new contact and then add this as the profile image:

Then set your phone to "Dark Mode".
Does the contact picture invert?
Do you think it should?
🆕 blog! “It has never been cheaper to commit a crime”
The UK has what is known as a "Standard Scale" of fines for criminal acts. For example, breaking the law may incur "a fine not exceeding level 4 on the standard scale". Part of the reasoning behind this, so I understand, is to make it simpler for the Government to update the value of those […]

Its usually either an image that's in the post, or something suitably generic from my media library.
Sometimes I'll use Flickr or Pixabay to get something illustrative.
I have 399 blog posts which don't have a featured image.
Guess that's my weekend sorted!
Here's a one-liner for WP CLI which will find them and print out in a pretty-ish format.
```
foreach (get_posts( array( 'post_type' => 'post', 'post_status' => array('publish'), 'posts_per_page' => -1,) ) as $post) { if(get_the_post_thumbnail($post)== "") { echo $post->post_date . " " . $post->guid . " " . $post->post_title . "\n"; } }
🆕 blog! “The minimal-div minimal-span philosophy of this blog”
If you've ever leaned Mandarin Chinese, you'll know about "measure words". They're the sort of thing that trip up all new learners of the language. While 个 (gè) can be used as a generic measure word, using it everywhere makes you sound like an idiot (according to my old teacher). So you learn to use […]
To be fair, it was my fault for misspelling my device name. Has been corrected and reopened.
I don't think I found it to be a toxic experience.
I *think* #LineageOS is missing several updated #Android fonts.
I've raise an issue at https://gitlab.com/LineageOS/issues/android/-/issues/6290
If you have any knowledge or experience of adding fonts to a custom ROM, please leave a comment.
🆕 blog! “The Cleaner 🆚 Der Tatortreiniger”
After watching the BBC comedy series The Cleaner staring Greg Davies, I was surprised to learn that it was actually a remake of a German comedy series called Der Tatortreiniger1. I don't think I've every seen a German sitcom before, so I found the US DVDs (which is the only way to watch it with […]
@3c04c07f having just finished my MSc, I'm very happy to chat about this!
Zotero was amazing for tracking references. It integrates with Google Docs (and others) very well.
I wrote this about using bullet points to help write an essay - https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2022/01/an-algorithm-to-write-an-assignment/
Which is pretty similar to your paper-based approach.
Good luck with your studies. Drop me a line if you want to chat about it.
How sensible / feasible would it be to have a different CSS theme for each year on my blog?
So posts from 2009 have a different look from 2010's posts etc.
I was thinking about how… misleading it is that all my old posts look the same as my modern ones.
Why, yes, this Yak is particularly hairy. Why do you ask?
🆕 blog! “Book Review: Time Squared - Lesley Krueger”
★★★☆☆
What if the heroine in a Jane Austen novel had visions of the future and the past? That's the rather compelling premise of Time Squared. But, ultimately, it doesn't really fulfil the promise. It starts as a fairly standard regency-style novel - which of the two dashing brothers will our orphaned heroine marry?!? Our protagoni…
I think I have every #Hacktoberfest t-shirt since they started.
I know it is selfish and wasteful - but I kinda don't want to participate without some swag.
Yeah, yeah, I know.
(Not here for your "Hacktoberfest is shite" hot takes. I enjoyed it - and got lots of help with some of my small projects.)
Ah, I see.
If the registrar disappears, they'd usually transfer to a different one.
If that doesn't happen, the registry will either act as or appoint a registrar of last resort.
Basically transferring your domains to a different registry.
The only time that hasn't happened, that I know of, is when a country has unilaterally revoked a registrar and all its domains (Mali).
@024f08ef
Short answer - no.
The only TLDs which have ever disappeared have been:
➡️ "internal" gTLD like .xperia
➡️ a couple of countries which no longer exist
➡️ some free ones (like .ml, .tk) which were severely mismanaged
➡️ some minor gTLDs are all but abandoned (.feedback)
There is the risk that a registrar might find your content objectionable (Libya removed some adult-ish domains from .my several years ago).
Or, .EU suddenly became unavailable to UK citizens post Brexit.
