Society when the hundredth study shows that UBI pretty much instantly leads to a better life for literally everyone: 🤷

Society when fintech douchebros say prime numbers and bad pictures of apes are the future of the economy: "Of course it is. Here's billions of dollars. Also, do you want a back rub?"
Hi! Being against Israel bombing civilians as retaliation isn't antisemitism. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
If you feel sad or down just imagine how the people who gave Space Karen money to buy Twitter feel like

Some space photons I caught in the trap I set up in my driveway.

This is a work in progress, I need more data to reduce noise and clean up the structure in the galaxy that is a bit fuzzy. #astrophotography

If KOSA passes, it's literally the nails in the coffin of any sort of open Internet and access to information.

It's book burning, but virtual.

Lots of small sites, like many Mastodon servers, will not be able to survive due to the unmanageable burden of managing "allowed" content and the cost of implementing inevitable ID laws that will follow once KOSA made the table for more censorship.

 @527c3522 hola!
I really hope they do a good banger in that emergency message
US peeps, reminder about the emergency broadcast test today.

Do not freak out, we’re still living in the same good old hellscape as every day, no change.
It seems like Mastodon is losing its mindshare to #Bluesky among many academics.

@9adfce6d @5f9be9ad @b8de0890 I’ve been trying to tell the project maintainers for years (it also affects other groups), but there seems to be too much inertia.
Fascinating how Threads is dying, who would have thought pushing the most mid shit ever posted on people would lead to this.
It's great to know that so many people at Google work "from the inside" to keep it this way; and are absolutely not bullshitting themselves or anything.

I’m just gonna say it: if you claim to “love the Internet” but you’re working at Google, Microsoft or Meta you’re bullshitting yourself.
A relatively simple method to make the “LLM content is overwhelming search engines” problem better would be the ability to block domains in search engines.

Combine that with social search where people (you trust) could share blocklists with you.

This is obviously never going to happen because it would eat into Google’s revenue; they’re all for making the Internet ever more shit.
The level of enshittification of the Internet from LLMs is truly spectacular.

Search for anything (in my case my ice maker doesn’t produce ice correctly) is now an exercise in futility.

Wonder if we can ever dig ourselves out of this level of shit.

Thanks, tech bros. Really super awesome stuff.
It’s weird to see otherwise great people succumb to the generative AI hype. Reminds me of like 2 years ago when artists fell for NFTs.

Mark my words: any technology that is “disruptive” and that seems too good to be true has at least one major flaw that will make it unusable in practice.
This is the "Taskbar" in Windows 11, which has now achieved its final form as a 100% clone of the Dock that was introduced on Macs about 22 years ago (and in similar form on NeXTSTEP about 34 years ago).

I don't want to sound alarmist, but the iPhone will be 20 years old in about 3 years and a few months
Government shutdown looms, COVID is on the rise, climate catastrophe is threatening our very existence…

Congress: *passes dresscode*
Trump was just found guilty of likely one of the worst cases of fraud in US history, which means that media will report a lot about Biden’s age and how COVID is over.
 Good question, website!

1. Faster page loading
2. Content doesn't get obscured
3. Not getting tracked by data brokers
4. Not getting infected by ransomware via vulnerable ad networks
5. Forcing publishers to pursue sustainable revenue streams instead of racing to the click-bait bottom

Just btw, I have nothing against ads.

But almost all ad networks do way more than show ads, often the ads are just a byproduct of incessant tracking and data gathering.

Combined with inefficient and insecure implementation and fueled by a death spiral of websites trying to outcompete each other on the most gross content.

Still astounded that doctor offices, including the fucking allergy & asthma specialist, don’t require masks in an ongoing pandemic with an airborne virus.

Complete and utter bullshit healthcare.
In this exhaustive mega-thread I will list and analyze all the amazing reasons why it’s awesome to have a browser engine monopoly:

Did you ever wonder how Mastodon servers look and how it all works behind the scenes?

Not like this, regrettably.

⚠️ PSA for US peeps: please don’t forget, new COVID boosters are available now and recommended for everyone.

Schedule an appointment right now to be better protected.
We’re in a deadly and disabling pandemic and 99% of people do absolutely nothing about it.

That includes many of the people reading this.

They’ll shrug and just continue to spread something that maims and kills, themselves and their “loved ones” included. Even though we have an extremely effective, cheap and readily available solution that does not interfere with their lives whatsoever: N95 (or better) masks.

How do you even begin to address a cognitive disconnect at such a huge scale?
Photobombed by an asteroid again, this time 914 Palisana. It's cruising around in the inner asteroid belt, a rock of around 80km size.

Funnily enough the asteroid is named after a fellow Austrian.

Some photons that chose to leave a space nebula and the stars around it just at the right instant and the right direction to crash into my camera sensor thousands of years later.

NGC 7822 in Cepheus, SHO narrowband; ~55h total exposure time.

@6a30a78d Fun fact: for the price of one War on Terror we could have launched at least 800 JWSTs, probably more like ten thousand of them as cost per unit goes down with scale.
