Don't go through this path to discuss what someone should do with their property/assets. The gas station owner should do whatever he wants, donate the gas, raise prices or shutdown to keep all the gas to him. Is his right and none of us has nothing to do with it.
Not in my plans to own a gas station, so there is no point to have a personal opinion on this matter. I really believe that this decision should be taken by the owner and I don't have the right to judge him.

I like to view the house where I live as utility, not investment. Specially because it's provide shelter to my family. This kind of thought bring me peace to know if something happens to me, they are not depending on anything else to have a place to live. Different case if was a second house being rent, airbnb, etc.
If I remember correct, if you reboot and start in recovery mode, tjere is a tool available capable to read raw disks and format with a MacOS partition. Or you can try with a Linux in a live USB.
