I want to set up and run my own #Bitcoin node. Any input from you all about going about this? Looking at #start9 or #umbrel Pros, cons of either? #asknostr
I've been very recently convinced that start9 is the better option for BTC related things.
Any specific reasons? I’m just beginning to look into this. I know umbrel has a lot of “apps” that run on it as well. Is start9 similar?
Start9 is better integrated with the services that they offer. Umbrel is broader, but, seems to be less reliable for things like BTC and lightning.
Interesting. Okay good to know. My primary purpose will be bitcoin specific. Node, connecting wallets, lightning etc.
I've been trying to decide between both and I gave up. I will just run both, but start with start9 since getting a node and lighting setup is more pressing.
Yeah I think im going to run with the start9 as well. Those are my priorities as well.
You want a fast disk (NVME). I run a node on an old laptop with an hdd and the initial sync took over a month.
!! I know the initial sync can take a long time. So you put together your own node? I know that’s an option, but I like the simplicity of purchasing something that is simple, plug and play so to speak. If I had something laying around I would consider this, but I would have to buy all the components regardless which is why I was looking at either umbrel or start9.
I just had an old laptop (like 2011 old) and just installed Debian and bitcoind in a docker container. It was a good option that didn't require me to spend any money. If you're planning to buy new hardware it will probably be much better for you. Umbrel and start9 are super easy since they give you a nice ui, but they basically just run containers under the hood. Learning how to self host containerized services was one of my goals so that's why I did it myself instead of going with the easier software.
Got it! Makes sense.. yeah the only thing I have laying around is a cheap, small laptop from like 2010. It doesn’t even have a reliable power supply (shuts off if I move it basically) And I don’t want to hog space on the family Mac. So I definitely need to buy the hardware anyway. Thanks for the input!
With nostr:nprofile1qqs9df4h2deu3aae83fmet5xmrlm4w5l9gdnsy3q2n7dklem7ezmwfcpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq5xamn8ghj7dnvv45xs7tywde8g6rpvakkjuekw46nvar4vdhxgan6wumkxatzwpckk6rk0puhjdm2da5k7ce5x4kkkumjx3jkzepwdahxjmmwqyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnwdaehgu3wd9hxvmckqw0xz you have BTC node, electrs, LND, Alby hub and mempool working together flawlessly through Tor. Cherry on top: you can also run your private nostr relay. Definitely worth a try.
Oooh I think you just sold me. This is exactly what I’m looking to do and set up for myself.
If you are going to use lightning, I would get something with a mirror RAID storage.
I’m going to have to look up what that means. Backup?
