@996c1dd0 I have intermittent unfixable bugginess with Windows VMs too. In my case one of the VMs stopped doing the dynamic resizing to match the window size. No amount of reinstalling guest additions fixes it. Sometimes I’ve tried toggling through graphics card emulation options and turning on/off the 3D acceleration pass through to get to work again.
@Charlotte Walker Someone on the running Matrix forum was talking about how much harder it was to get started after three weeks of no running than they thought it would be. I could see two weeks being an upper limit before noticeable diminishing. For me when I fall off the fitness wagon it is usually measured in months or years so essentially a full reset.
I'm reading some ten your old blog posts as I try to do some analysis for a new blog post I am writing. In some moments it feels like I'm reading someone else's blog. In other moments I'm flashing back to vignettes of scenes from the time I wrote the blog posts. It is an interesting mental sensation.
It's been clear that Megyn Kelly broke her brain at some point over the last few years. This just puts it beyond a shadow of a doubt. When even Donald Trump sounds more reasonable than you do on COVID measures and vaccines you are complete and utter trash to me. www.joemygod.com/2023/09/megyn…
@7b660d22 There are about 6-12 accounts I used to follow regularly on Twitter that didn't come over. Many I followed regularly came over but don't really post here much any more. I hope they all come here or a platform that federates here anyway. It is what it is. I have zero intention of ever using Twitter ever again.
There are ultra-marathons across the Sahara Desert, Antarctica, and other extreme conditions but one of the toughest in the world is the Barkley Marathon in the USA in the state of Tennessee. After 37 years only it has only been successfully completed 21 times by 17 runners. The documentary team at Pilot Field made this great documentary of the 2023 event. #running #marathon #UltraMarathon #BarkleyMarathon youtu.be/IEIerVw1vsw?si=SqUK3R…
@3531e3da The asymmetry in their representation in the Senate is even worse since each have only 2 senators. And yes there was always the planned asymmetry, for better or worse, but it has gotten to grotesque truly anti-democratic proportions.
Thanks to @a1982639 I learn that the rich asshole who said we needed to put unemployment up to 50% to break these sassy workers is also the guy who gave us the whole avocado toast meme with a similarly out of touch anti-people commentary. As Don points out he is pretty much accurately describing what way too many of the uber-wealthy think and what is broken in our capitalist system. I bitch enough about how I hate how US labor unions try to leverage an "us versus them" mentality whereas I would like the more cooperative ones that exist in European unions or even better proper widely held ownership of businesses a la the co-op model. This guy points out that that "us versus them" mentality is more than alive and well on the other side of the table as well. Just like the Silicon Valley techbros that he would fit in with perfectly, they should be reviled not admired. #BillionairesShouldNotExist #economics #capitalism
The dismal return of the avocado toast guy
@ee1f9ab4 ...and he's the so-called moderate Republican the media is propping up as the Trump alternative (after DeSantis went even more offensively MAGA than Trump). They pulled that crap during the election too, downplaying how extreme his social positions were and painting it as "just about parental rights". So frustrating...
@James Gleick He has an account at @88c43060 . I don't know if TPM itself has accounts though. I don't think he's posted from it in a little while though.
Great write-up by Ed Zitron summarizing the rot of Silicon Valley Billionaire Tech Bro culture and the artifacts we are living with to this day #BillionairesShouldNotExist open.substack.com/pub/ez/p/sil…
@Fabio Manganiello Why would someone jump to thinking "autism" from either of those two terms in the first place?!?! It sounds like the vocal but small subset of internet people who just run around finding the "outrage" of the day to pile on. They move on to the next "outrage" in another day so I find it best to just ignore them nowadays. I'm all for internalizing actual constructive criticism and calling out when missing something but when it is just the nihilistic self indulgent internet troll crap I treat it as such.
In other breaking unforeseen news, you will get fat if you shovel large volumes of junk food into your face on daily basis. We have to have to have to address the addition side of the equation which will not be possible without phasing our fossil fuels. #ClimateChange #science #climate
‘A critical moment’: UN warns world will miss climate targets unless fossil fuels phased out
@e168c383 Yeah I can only imagine. Even her one physics one I watched was her click-baity conclusion that faster than light travel is possible. But not really of course...see we don't have quantum gravity (true) or unified theory (true) so therefore we can't say that faster than light travel may be possible (uhh *maybe*) so physicists should be researching that (wut?!?!).
I only learned of popular Physics YouTuber Sabine Hossenfelder this week. My first two introductions to her content were a really poorly done video on capitalism and another really poorly done one on trans people. I decided to watch one in her wheel house, physics, and that too was pretty shitty. It had the same sort of problem though. String together some straw man arguments (or worse) and try to make a provocative conclusion and then claim that everyone else isn't being open minded enough. It's a total fail in my book. If you see her content take it with a huge grain of salt.
@b6ace204@James Gleick As we've already seen with other LEO collisions the debris field spread can extend dramatically above the lower layers of the atmosphere. I'm not worried about a dead satellite becoming space junk. I'm worried about the excessive debris field that the inevitable collisions will create. These will be pieces of debris smaller than we can track and even with we could requiring a catalog of billions of objects which would be impossible to maintain even with all of the world compute resources put together. Just like with so much of Musk's public alpha/beta testing shit the whole "just trust me it's not that hard" isn't comforting to me one bit. I don't know why others continue to buy into it with all evidence to the contrary.
@Chris Pirillo@John Lusk Yeah it's called an internet meme. It's meant to be more tongue in cheek. But now that you mention it. I used to think it was a problem with how these things are filled and sealed on assembly lines. But now many many products, including granola, come in resealable bugs so I honestly don't know any longer. So why not cereal too? No idea. I just use a clip on the bag to reseal it.
Has Season 2 Episode 4 episode of Wheel Of Time shown up on Amazon Prime for anyone else yet? It was supposed to drop half an hour ago. #fantasy #WheelOfTime
@d7e3b44f I believe so, yes. I ripped it out of my Friendica server and I think, but may be mistaken, Friendica overall is mothballing it. Meanwhile they are adding more and more BlueSky support :).
@James Gleick And is essentially going to turn LEO into a toxic waste dump that the tax payers will end up having to foot the bill for cleaning up, if it can be cleaned up at all.
But hey, Musk can pretend to be Tony Stark and indulge his Mars Neo-feudalism fantasies so it is all worth it I guess... /sarcasm
@647f548e I started ignoring him 2 years ago and my time of using Ruby was from 2017-2018 anyway. To me he's just another vapid techbro with a god complex.
♲ @@8442e8f7:Stupid pilot tricks can kill. High G maneuvers, especially close to the ground, are particularly dangerous. Combine that with lowering the weight of your aircraft by dumping a bunch of water, and, well, watch the video. It’s shocking.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp19ch40t0c
@Ted Driver@7f6d53b6 Back in the day I liked two of her books: "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" and "The Poisonwood Bible". I haven't kept up with her writings since though.
@Count Shoqula When Apple started deleting RIPed MP3s without asking and replacing with their DRM Equivalents without asking I thought of rage quitting it for the more FOSS Android. I did a one week experiment. I had a pretty good UX. I went to look at the data vacuuming between the two. Even with me manually opting out of most of it I was horrified at what Google was doing. I bitterly went back to Apple hoping that one of those Linux phones that were “coming soon” would meet minimum sufficiency. That obviously never happened and I don’t think ever will.
