I think there are reasons to be concerned with his nomination. His rank isn’t one of them for me. Quality of character and leadership ability do not always match rank.

No a Major is not the lowest ranked officer you can be. Being of a higher rank does not necessarily mean someone will be a better Secretary of Defense.

Probably a bit of both. I know people in politics so I wouldn’t be surprised if my number was acquired that way too. Interestingly the one campaign that got my number this year has never messaged me.
I get contacted by Republicans, Democrats, and Libertarians about Federal and more than one states/ local races. Likely local candidates provide phone lists to state parties and in turn the national parties. You have to provide your address and phone number when you register to vote. Even the DMV sells your information.
Odell handled it by directing them to the meetup page. Plenty of events next week if they’re still in town, including Nostrville 2.0 on Wednesday November 6th.
I think this will post a readable link to the article “We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages” on Business Insider. The irony that it’s behind a paywall is not lost on me.
