Oddbean new post about login | logout I think a lot of you drastically underestimate how quickly notes currently propagate across relays. Both client design and relay syncing play a role. Most notes written to small relays are visible on many large relays within a minute.
It would be awesome if we had someway of seeing a visualization of the network topology in real time as the note travels through clients and relays.
I agree. You would basically have it monitor (every?) note and check which relays it’s on some interval for the first X minutes of its life. It’s quite challenging though because it happens fast!
I think you could just sample and experiment with sending a singular test note to a small relay. But yes, you would have to subscribe to a boatload of relays at the same time right before sending the note, filtering for the note that was just sent.
Everything feels so dead, tho, and we can't see where our notes have gone.

Probably just need more transparency in the clients, so that we can at least easily tell when it's hit the in/outboxes. Otherwise, you press send and it just gets swallowed up into nothingness until someone reacts or responds.
nostrudel has an activity log on the bottom left that shows you if you click on it how many sends succeeded to which relays, also coracle shows this in a popup at the top of the display that holds open while it waits for them to complete or timeout and then it lets you click on a details view but coracle doesn't show much feedback on the chat in the same way as notes, where nostrudel does many other clients are completely opaque about it

The browser starts timing out, after about 100 relays, but you get the general idea.
Yea this is part of the reason why some dont implement outbox, because the big realys also get those notes
Yes and many of these clients also rebroadcast the note anytime someone interacts with it so it’s self fulfilling.
That just totally defeats the purpose of relay hints (as much as i dislike them) Please don't do this people!!!
