I used to run an XMPP server, had fun with it, but sadly hardly anyone else I knew used it. If it was more widely used I'd definitely jump on it again. Conversations in particular has OMEMO E2EE on by default too. It's based on the Signal Protocol iirc. nostr:nevent1qqsznv3cykkshgpj6ql8j2svukshqzs3zu72pw75g898l6net7z0f8spz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzvupzqgzs9zp6ecjkvmaymcf07m7qrv4x5e2d383gxshd2g7r6f3vfghuqvzqqqqqqyp7g2de
Same. I used Matrix fairly often But when I was consolidating a bunch of my services to save some money, I realized I was only really using it for random group chats and end up nuking it because it wasn't a daily chat app for me, unfortunately.
Same. I used to run a Matrix server implementation (pretty sure it was lighter than Synapse) running on a RaspPi 4. Was a fun project but I just never used it.
On it now, and can definitely relate with the adoption pain. But God, is it nice when someone DOES jump on it at your recommendation. WhatsApp isn't shit, but I have it for those too cowardly for XMPP (and my youngest brother).
It is satisfying haha! I sadly pretty much have to use WhatsApp because it's become the standard instead of SMS here, but I use contact scopes permission in Graphene so it only sees the numbers I want it to.
Yep. I like Matrix but nobody wants to use it (none of the normies anyways) so im stuck with Telegram for the normiest and Threema for the few who care.
Telegram is at least half-decent even if it's cloud based. I tend to use Signal for peeps I know (and can convince) or Session for people who care but I wanna stay anon with.
I found session to be pretty good overall. 🫂
Very easy to onboard people to it as well. Just install and generate an ID. Boom. Done. It's become surprisingly popular in multiple circles of less techie people who want some anonymity for this reason.
