I used to run an XMPP server, had fun with it, but sadly hardly anyone else I knew used it.
If it was more widely used I'd definitely jump on it again. Conversations in particular has OMEMO E2EE on by default too. It's based on the Signal Protocol iirc.

Yep. I like Matrix but nobody wants to use it (none of the normies anyways) so im stuck with Telegram for the normiest and Threema for the few who care.
Telegram is at least half-decent even if it's cloud based. I tend to use Signal for peeps I know (and can convince) or Session for people who care but I wanna stay anon with.
I found session to be pretty good overall. 🫂
Very easy to onboard people to it as well. Just install and generate an ID. Boom. Done. It's become surprisingly popular in multiple circles of less techie people who want some anonymity for this reason.
I seemed to have less issues maintaining connections and getting notifications than on SimpleX as well. I’m low key retesting SimpleX on iOS right now though. Last time I used it, it was basically broken.
