It's bizarre how many Nostr users seem to think that everyone is using or wants to use Apple's stack. Just use Damus (Can they?) Wen iOS? (Why iOS?) No stack is perfect, but the Apple ecosystem seems about as far from the general Nostr ethos as one could get, in my opinion. Focusing energy and attention on such a centralized stack seems counterintuitive to me if your goal is to escape systems like that.
Naidl it
Yes, but I'm bullish on PWA's.
Damus is just because @jb55 happened to have an iPhone for another company he was working for at the time lol. Not a pre planned thing. Android coming early 2025 💜
Cool, but not my primary point. My issue is with asking devs (like Amethyst) to create for a worse stack and trying to convince people to switch to what is currently Apple only software. It seems more prudent to support the ones building on much more open stacks than to go in reverse, again, if one's goal is to escape those types of systems. I just think it's bizarre to do things that strengthen a system you're trying to escape.
I think people should still have a good nostr experience even if they haven't yet accepted your correct opinion on the state of software sovereignty. This is why I am working so aggressively on making damus cross-platform. I think building *only* on apple is a mistake and will be limiting to nostr clients building there.
I do too, but I don't necessarily agree that telling newcomers (who have already landed on Primal, Amethyst, etc) the best way to experience Nostr is through a closed Apple ecosystem just because they need help with something in Amethyst, Primal, etc. That's what spurred this thought for me. I see it quite a lot and I think it only reinforces the Apple model, which is awful in my opinion. It's great that you're working to get Damus (and Nostr) to more people, I can't wait to try it if it works with GrapheneOS, but I'm not going to steer people away from projects that are already here and better align (today) with what I think is the general Nostr ethos. Obviously, opinions are just opinions, and mine aren't strictly focused on growth over principles that may very well be dogmatic. Thanks for the response.
I happen to think that many of my opinions probably should NOT be strictly accepted by everyone. But I also think a push and pull is important for things like Nostr, Bitcoin, etc. Maybe we land somewhere in the middle and have a great experience for the maximum number of people, including extremists like me.
Do you value Nostr because it isn't closed like Facebook, etc? Are you actively encouraging people to hop into the Apple system and remain there indefinitely? Will you buy another iPhone when you can afford something like a Pixel with GrapheneOS? If Yes, No, No, then you aren't the type of person I'm referencing here. I'm referring to the people who claim to hate closed, controlled systems yet use AND promote (this is really the key) one of the most controlled systems on earth.
Your issues are somewhat separate from my point here, but Pixels with GrapheneOS are really easy now. I started hacking Android devices when some of the first ones came out and things are SO MUCH better now. Rooting Samsung phones was a lot more dangerous and difficult than using a Pixel with GrapheneOS. It's certainly okay to be afraid and I'm not telling anyone to go buy anything. I've used Swappa to buy used Pixels for years. I never buy the latest release. I bought my last Pixel new, but it was a model behind and a lot cheaper. The A series is great. That'll save money if you decide to switch in the future.
It's also worth considering that being stuck on an iPhone for now doesn't mean you can't try to maximize your freedom within that box. My point here really is that some people are promoting the box and telling other people they should enter the box. Not necessarily that some people are temporally stuck in the box. I'm not criticizing anyone really. It's just a bizarre approach to me.
