Question for content creators, artists, musicians, and creators of all types on Nostr: what do you feel is the biggest benefit of using Nostr to share your content versus centralized social media platforms? What makes Nostr better? Alternately, if you feel Nostr is NOT better than legacy social media platforms, what would make it better in your opinion? #AskNostr
Owning access to one's audience, small as it may be now.
nostr needs to get better hosting video form content, long and short! I would have made an account for the podcast way sooner if the flow of uploading clips are easier and faster. It will get there sooner than we know and can't wait!
have you tried uploading videos via zapstream yet?
I haven't. for now for clips only Iris would work for uploading, I'll look into zapstream. Thank you!
I thought Iris development has been discontinued? Also there is a slight difference in "just" adding a clip to a note or in uploading clips, shorts and videos to nostr via sites like flare or zapstream. Notes disappear in the void while those platforms keep them visible since video content is their focus.
I recommend checking out @Highlighter and https://www.flare.pub https://highlighter.com/walker I upload my videos satellite.earth then post them via Highlighter, and they’re automatically pulled into flare.pub 🤙
For the nostr streaming part: * No affiliate grind to reach monetarisation * No tax interview * No 50% platform cut * Free re-streaming (if desired) * emotes, badges and "other stuff" available "out of the box". * No channel deletion unless a DMCA is presented. * and more...
Forgot to add discoverability. On nostr ANYONE can and will be discovered at this moment in time.
Really solid points 🤌
thanks and I love seeing that you're uploading lots of your content to nostr. Keep it coming because nostr does have users but it needs more content. much more!!
I’m not a creator per se…but seems like ownership is a huge win here. Guessing the technology limitations are the big challenge though.
The idea to be rewarded with real value through #zaps, even if you have a tiny audience. Centralized platforms only reward those with big following, since much of the revenues comes from sponsorships and so on. Here, my content is reward without taking that into account.
It's almost obviously not better in so many ways. Probably huge benefits for joining and creating on here early. Especially for the non bitcoiners, but few are willing to put the time in (yet). It definitely feels more personal, instead of just a game on centralized social. And I wonder if that feeling will stay as the tools for creators grow and the network grows.
AND I'm still a zap maxi. Too fun for some reason.
The key thing about Nostr for me is that since there are no algorithms, when my art is liked, it reaches anyone because it is shared without limit. On Instagram it only reaches a small circle of friends, and on Twitter the same, unless you pay to be spread by their algorithms. Zaps then are a plus, because they are the real confirmation of whether my art has value or not.
What makes nostr better? - No commercials - You control the algorithm - You control your own data - Zaps - High Signal - People are nicer - Ability to switch client What can make nostr better? - More users - More content - Larger network effects
- The only things monetized are those that the free market values. ⚡️
What makes nostr better THAN WHAT? - No commercials - You control the algorithm - You control your own data - Zaps - High Signal ( Lots of static ) - People are nicer ( nicer how? Most here are fake AF & Seek to hold onto their perceived power. Receipts 🧾 coming ) - Ability to switch client (agreed 100!💯)! What **could** make nostr better? - More users ( maybe ) - More content ( agreed ) - Larger network effects ( we laugh 🤣) https://media.tenor.com/kF4bzg_TriwAAAAC/qq.gif https://media.tenor.com/WzzeZbOQhRcAAAAC/starbeam-netflix.gif
Isn’t the following note by @Byrdman talking about a coffee brand with link to shopping page considered advertising? It appeared in my feed… https://primal.net/e/note1ah502h26fxwydlzgmjuwj2g2t3shkvucqxxjf3pqcdsut6jkjm3qsnm60w
The reach, the engagement and zaps. With those barriers removed, I'm incentivized to get off my arse and produce. And the decentralized nature of Nostr is a priceless insurance policy. Also appreciate that I'm not talking to or engaging with bots. The audience so far, reflects a level of curiosity that makes it all fun.
Currently, Nostr is harder to get engagement. Not impossible, but requires lots of attention, posts, comments, etc. All the creators I’ve talked to love how payments are embedded directly into the UX, allowing income to happen generously and more often
There is no way to try and alter history on Nostr by deleting a post (or 2) (or all), because you CAN'T in Nostr. This is perfect for timeline and history achival purposes or proof something happened at a certain time or in a sertain sequencial order, even though not always convenient for the publisher. A typo will forever be logged. A lie will forever be a logged. A mistake will forever be a logged. Truth will forever be logged. Nostr is a better historical archive of whatever is posted versus centralised solutions with options to edit history. Sort of like: Nostr is the proof-of-work version of published history X is the proof-of-stake version of published history
To me the social graph. As a musician my fans will get my last song on Wavlake and hear my podcast on fountain, I’m not loosing my audience from one app to another
Having a gallery view or media tab built into profiles would be a nice feature. A dedicated media only feed with UI similar to insta would also be interesting. Like combining Twitter and Insta into one.
A number of good answers here already so I won't repeat things. I never spent a ton of time on Big Tech socials specifically promoting my artwork, but experienced enough of it to affirm what others have more thoughtfully pointed out in the past as a foundational issues with content creation and monetization, specifically how content creators are often exploited by the platforms. Also, between algos and influencer culture the incentives around content creation get weird. It is very refreshing that V4V is integrated into the fabric of Nostr. It is also fun to be in the early days. Hash tags and communities for art, design, illustration, video, and other creative content are all still in their infancy. This makes being *discovered* a bit easier in some ways and zaps make sharing work more rewarding. I'm regularly surprised and humbled by the generosity of this community. It is pretty wild getting zapped in bitcoin for something I did professionally and was initialy paid in fiat to create. —— Not sure if this suggestion would make Nostr *better* but it would be neat to see a client or two that are designed to be more portfolio oriented and creative-centric. like Dribbble or Behance or Vimeo.
I appreciate the thoughtful response. Regarding your last point, I think what @PABLOF7z is building with @Highlighter might be what you’re looking for.
I'll look into it, thanks!
To me are the following: 1.) unfuckwithable both content creators and censorship. Meaning, I do not have to keep second guessing myself so I conform to certain rules of the platform nor worry if I offend anyone. tbh, it has been mentally refreshing for me. I attract the content and people I want to engage. 2.) Community maturity - To support my first point. When I started #nostr I was completely lost and the community has been welcoming. The engagement is very positive and helpful. The tribe encourages discussion and respectfully disagree without throwing stones to each other and being mean. it is indeed a very mature community in a positive way! 3.) Lastly, value for value. I earned £3 in less than a month. to some people this is nothing. but it means a massive difference. I started Tiktok since 2019 and not receive a penny from them. In fact, I have given them more money than they reciprocate to me as a creator. If you are a creator then you know that content creation is a long process esp if you are a one staff running the entire thing. From ideas, to research, to scripts, to shooting, editing, organically marketing it, pivot, repeat and lesson learned. The competition is so high esp if you are competiting to £ million of ads, etc to get the opportunity to get more audience. No guarantee that the algorithm will give you justice. I spent money to boost some of my post and when I stopped, it has affected my views massively because the platform wants more money from you. However, nostr, I can pick and choose which clients will meet my needs. In short, in a month of consistently being on Nostr, my experience have been overall positive so much so that I am doing research to promote Nostr and the community has been helping me with all the questions I throw at them. I truly believe of what Nostr's vision and I am willing to help the cause with as lil as I can. There is no place I'd rather be! 🫰👌👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Cheers, M💋
As for room for improvement, I had a look at the streaming, video only and long form content. I believe it is something we need to invest more. Eg. The storage is cheap these days but I noticed that nostr storage is not competirive which deter people from buying or using it. At the moment I am using my own hosting so I am not concern of it atm. Privacy - I am always using VPN but keen to know how we stop leaking data which I believe jack mentioned on one of his talks, unless I misunderstood this. I'd like to see a how-to guide on how to create a relay or host your own so we can support and expand nostr more. lastly, perhaps a question than a suggestion. if the accounts from centralised platforms are going to move now, do we have the speed, bandwidth and scale to accommodate them? If not, how can we help? I asked the same question to @jack 🤓
This is good feedback and the reply above some wise insight into tiktok. If you are interested in video you might want to check out https://hivetalk.org
Thank you and I will defo look into it. Much appreciated! 💯
I had a quick read of the "About" page of the hivetalk and it looks very promising. I wonder if this is the app that can fully replace MS Teams! 🤞🤞🤞🤞
No idea on MS teams, as i dont use microsoft. But feel free to drop us feedback and try hivetalk out with frens
definitely! You are not losing much for not trying MS Teams. All my life I was condition to use Microsoft and I am slowly moving away from its grip! Yes, will definitely give you feedback. Where do I send my feedback? Ty
Best place to send feedback is DM or on telegram. Thanks
I don't use telegram. Only Signal
I tried to login but it is NOT asking for nsec option. I looked at your video and it is asking for login extension but on the actually web page, it is not available. Btw, I do not have Alby yet even though I register on their waiting list. My immediate thoughts of your app, is the login. I'd say I am tech savvy but not all people are so this maybe a detractor unless your target audience are techy people and not those non-tech. If the latter then convenience must be a priority without having to go through GitHub or something to install anything. People get intimidated by seeing code. Why I say github because I was clicking "other key stores" and got directed to a github. I have not use nsec.app nor other keystore. You have a page for FAQ but in order to get further info I need to install Telegram which an app I do not use. The login journey is not straightforward to me and it takes a lot of user effort. I hope this helps! 🤓
In general you dont want to paste your nsec into an app, as a best practice nostr is moving away from that, and towards browser extensions. We’ll take your feedback into account. Thanks
thank you. I know it is a good practice. However, the browser extension is very limited and is not available on Firefox or Startpage browser. Alby is still on waiting list 😩
Do you just need an alby code? If yes i can DM you one
I have managed to figure it out. Here are the root cause: it turned out that nsec.app and your hivetalk do not seem to work on my firefox. When I moved to chrome, it seems to be fine and I was able to login. I am not sure of this is expected behaviour. It maybe worth putting your help guide on the same page as your FAQ without asking to use another app like telegram. You have to consider not everyone is using telegram or other app. Lastly, as for login, a simple guide of how to login or explainer what is keystores to those who are fairly new to nostr or the concepts of keystores. I have created my room and so far, looking around, it is quite good. I will have to test it first with other people. Thank you for sharing your creativity to this tribe and greatly appreciated! 💯👌👏 https://image.nostr.build/d12c67b8310c6603d95501eaa36122fce9be23ac68c7ccbd2cdeb67c463166bb.jpg
Do you have plans to create a mobile app of hivetalk.org?
No. It will be a web app only. We are currently only p2p funded as volunteers only, so it won’t be run at a corporate pace.
oh I see. It makes sense. I am rooting for you! 💯
The extension works on Firefox!
hi. thank you to getting back to me. yeah it was working on firefox. I do not know but a month ago I could not get it to work. thanks for reaching out! 🤓👌
this is not working for me for both mobile and desktop. I am trying nsec.app rn and it is still loading. https://m.primal.net/KZYc.jpg
@brugeman can possibly help you with this as he wrote the nostr login extension
Would be very keen to use your app so I can migrate my stuff from MS Team to yours. 😩
Do keep in mind this is all beta, unfunded or underfunded software, so best not have microsoft level expectations just yet
Don't worry you have surpassed MS Teams already for the requirements that I am after! You have done well for sharing your creativity. I am an early adopter and love to share new tech to people esp small businesses! I am adding this to my tool kit! 😉👌💯
Haven't seen any spam on here yet
Nostr Pros: - Censorship proof (Brazilian here) - No ads - High signal/noise ratio - Personally, I find more like-minded people here (this can also be a con) Cons: - Still a small network (which in turn is the reason of a few of the pros listed) - User experience can be improved (so far I tried primal and domus)
wife got her Etsy account disabled without any reason or recourse given. luckily it wasn't fully developed and we weren't depending on it for our livelihood. Nostr gives me hope of living without fear of getting cancelled because someone's half baked algo thinks you are a bot.
