If nostr builds the tools to enable subscription to creators, they’ll start making their way here. Being able to send notes is great but it doesn’t guarantee reach - something creators need to have. nostr:note1tlj7twd8vs305tuk2paswv7y7k0qtk2l4kmqfvqujwyqktwl3m9qgs9e9w
We can support subscriptions with NWC, but that also requires wallet providers to offer granular NWC support. E.g. Alby does it right, Coinos is not yet suitable.
If Alby does it good then why not turn that into a NIP for other wallets to follow?
There is a NIP for the client/relay/provider standard https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/47.md The difference is whats happening on the provider. Alby and LNbits (nwcprovider extension) support defining budgets for each NWC configuration, and allow multiple configs per wallet and overall granular control. Coinos has provided basic support, auto creating NWC connect string for the wallet, but no budget (unlimited spend), no permissions conatraints (full access) and only one for the wallet. In time I anticipate coinos enhancing that capability to bring it up to the standards of other implementations. Subscriptions using NWC for automating periodic pulls should only be configured with those wallets offering granular control.
Could that granular control also be codified into a NIP?
Maybe, but its not really a nostr issue. Its not a lightning or LUD issue either. Its a provider feature for their custodial accounts. NIPs are best as bare minimum specs for building blocks, vs documenting implementation specific options. As an example, I wouldnt want NIP96 for file servers to standardize and force those kinds of providers to implement transforms for downscaling, text parsing, transcript producing either. Those features are nice to have, but not essential for core function. The more bloat to a NIP, the more moat building it creates for incumbents What may be appropriate would be a NIP standard for discovering client/relay/services, and their feature sets. Individual domains would need to self regulate though, so it may just be passing the buck on the issue
Didn't highlighter offer subscription services for creators?
I thought so, but I’m not sure if it ever worked or if it does now. I recall the website changing a lot and often. Last I saw it seemed to be a clone of all the other clients. Feels like an identity crisis 😂 I’d love to just build faaans the way I designed it.
Identity crisis ,😂😂 I'll check it out again tomorrow, got out of touch with all the development tbh.
I just tried it on mobile and it’s broken. Links not working, UI a mess, views not displaying. I saw a subscribe button to highlight things which doesn’t make sense to me but clicking the button didn’t work. Def needs some mobile love. Curious to test on desktop but I’m going to bed soon
no, they won't. - when you have a community that values hodling over spending, those people will not subscribe. - having subscriptions available is not a guarantee of success. - nostr is a long way from being a viable way to earn.
1. Nostr is not for a single community. 2. Zaps are sent liberally by hodlers so it's not true that they are prunes. value for value is real But you can't earn a living on nostr now because the scale is too small. That has nothing to do with the technology though, it has to do with adoption
and attitude I think, so far. in the future it may change. at the moment, the capability is there (creatr) but the audience is lacking.
What does that exactly mean though?
100% delivery rate. Currently, if you send a note, only people who are online might see it, or if you use unseen DVM you might see it, but it’s buried in other notes. If people don’t want to miss your notes, they need a way to subscribe somehow and get a guarantee of your note delivery even when they’re offline. Basically a priority dm inbox that can be bulk sent to.
What’s the difference between a follow list then? Is it just a “priority follow” basically?
Follow list relationship is a bit different. You’re saying, I want to see your stuff. A priority follow is more of “I really don’t want to miss whatever you announce”. What you might call a subscription. I think nostr could solve this with priority DMs, but you need to have a tool for creators to make lists quickly and easily and be able to bulk dm the people who opted in to be on those lists. In kind 1 clients I imagine this as a subscribe button and a priority dm area. In specialized clients you might be able to opt into different lists and creator can categorize which list you belong to. This is mostly a front end function and a way to sort who should be priority dmed and who shouldn’t.
DMs are kind of like this now but people are treated as strangers by default (rightfully so). We could keep it all in one dm area as long as there was some way to indicate that you allow a person to go straight to your “known contacts”
I see yea that could definitely be very useful. In general we need a way to see content from people who don’t post as much
That too but it’s a bit different too. Creators want to make sure they can reach their audiences directly, but in a mutually agreed way (not like sending random dms to people). Following people doesn’t mean I want to get nonstop dms from them unless I specially say I do.

Community is great but I think we can keep it even more mvp with some sort of a subscription inbox where you only get notifications from people you subscribe to and not just follow. Then we could build a tool to send messages to all subscribers at once. Not all content creators wish to run communities, some just want to notify of new products. I know I don’t want to run a community but being able to know for sure I can reach the people that want to hear from me and they’ll for sure see my message is super valuable.
