A relay to client connection that is literally un-censorable across nation state firewalls would be epic. Make it so that the only way a state could block content is by turning off all computers in the country.

Jb55, can you create a way to incentivize BitTorrent video seeders , like zaps of some forms? So they can keep videos available for a long time. Or a mechanism to broadcast and get paid by the zappers. I don’t know, is it technically possible.

I think, video is critical for a platform, with nostr being a protocol, without video censorship resistant, it is only text censorship resistant, plus No nostr clients can host terabytes of videos like X, Facebook, YouTube, nostr clients and users must have a way to make money and being truly censorship resistant. The world will not change with text only news. Nostr is nothing with just text and nostr clients relying videos hosted on YouTube or X. Videos convey emotion and trust that no poetic text can

I was talking to bram cohen about bittorrent live, it was supposed to make video live streaming even better, but it got taken over by corporate interests and shareholders and all that fun stuff. Still lots of optimizations we could do at the protocol level to improve decentralized video.
Yay! 👏 i image notes with embed video ( live leeched stream from seeds), and payment options: preview ( free? ), continue to watch ( pay by zap some amount), a mechanism to distribute zaps from seeds, just some ideas. I am a amateur IT guy, this is beyond me to implement.

Files or video files must be stored on computers, it costs a lot for storage. Nostr clients cannot store millions of videos files because they don’t have tens of billions of dollars like X , YouTube or Facebook. So, hundreds of nostr users ( hopefully) each can store several videos on their computer at home or phones can choose to seed and get paid (zaps ) by viewers ( nostr users watch videos - leeches), this incentivize them to keep videos online for a long time. BitTorrent live might be needed here. This is decentralized video hosting, storing and broadcasting, therefore resists censorship. Nostr community now can be independent from X, YouTube, etc.
Ipfs is another alternative similar to bittorrent.

In what way? The efficiency of the DHT and gosssip protocols need a little improvement but the standards for making interoperable hashed content seem to be a good foundation to build from

BitTorrent is not optimized for video streaming. The best tech for video streaming is Adaptive Bitrate Streaming. Not everyone has the same bandwidth so it doesn’t make sense to have a single bitrate for all connections. I was actually brainstorming a protocol yesterday that was something like HLS + bittorrent, but it’s a hard problem.

The problem with that is, sure I will store and seed all seasons of Game of Thrones in 4K HDR forever, but I won't store and seed the 2h episodes of your podcast/show that - bc it is reacting to current events - is only relevant for a week...

But for how long? For example, How long will 100 people seed your large video files for , say, 5 months if you asked them for help? Would YouTube grow to be a giant as it is now if uploaders were not paid by YouTube ( by displaying ads). The world exists based on work. Everything costs money. You pay people for their work . if nostr wants to exist long term, incentive is the way
Lol, that is a conservative take. Piracy is booming. People buy seedboxes overseas and share for long periods of time. Dirt cheap.

My favourite topic 😍 Nostr+Torrent+Zaps Maybe the torrent protocol part of it should get modified to fit the streaming needs and zap integration. Nostr should index it all and provide discovery and the social aspect. I'm sure there will be some centralization, where some entities will just store and seed everything. If there is a zap value per MB streamed why wouldn't someone do it? But the little guys would do their part too, especially with the controversial stuff that really needs decentralization. Not everything would need to be paid by the viewer too. There could be sponsored "preZapped" views... "for my followers i'm sponsoring 1000 views of this video, 2 views per npub". It could be sponsored by the seeder or by a 3rd party. Adds could pay you to view them. "Oh... I need to charge my zapper, lets watch some adds". I'm sure there is a way how to use nsec/npub to sign the video/torrent and automatically verify in the nostr client. That would be helpfull for recognizing fakes. I have no idea if people that built LBRY used their knowledge somewhere, but I'm sure they would have some experience to pass on. Don't want to point at Jack here, but it seems like a thing he could help move forward (as he does with many many things).
Of course the major hurdles are the network effect and competing with "free".
