Looking for suggestions on the least technical approach to running a bitcoin and lightning node.

Came across umbrella. Anyone have experience with umbrella or have suggestions/advice for other solutions.

It’s a great OS. If you need any help, more than happy to guide you through the process.
 Thank you.
Hi TKay, I order my umbrel and then did the research on what it takes to run a profitable node. Yes, completely back asswards. Did not realize all the costs and how much BTC needs to be staked. Is your node profitable? Is there a way to have your channels rebalance automatically? All these questions came up after I read the thread below.

Did you order an Umbrel Home?

On profitability. Mine is not profitable so are 90% of the nodes on the network 😅 if you find someone with a profitable node, let’s find a way to talk to him and learn how they do it.

But I’ll say this, you learn a lot, it’s an investment for the future, it does save you money on transfer fees so over time, instead of paying for onchain fees every time you DCA or send someone some sats, all of these will be almost free.

If you had asked me, I would have said don’t buy an Umbrel Home, it’s a little expensive for the spec. Any old miniPC would have done just fine, if not better. I say this because the more expensive the hardware, the longer it will take to break even. 😅

Definitely join the nodestriches. Which I can’t tag. For some reason.

I joined @The Nodestrich ♾️ . Thanks for the info. I did purchase the Umbrel Home. My plan is to run a BTC node and lightning node and do my part to validate the networks and make a tiny bit of BTC on the side. I will set them up at look for other ways to earn some BTC.
Hi TKay. Setting up umbrel now. Currently, updating the blocks on the BTC node. Should I leave the factory settings alone on my BTC and lightning node?
 Hey!
For 95% of the use cases, yes.
No need to tinker with it. It will just sit and do its thing.

The first setting you might want to change is giving your lightning node an alias and a unique color 😊

There are some settings that you might need to change down the road, but really all of this is due to specific functionalities you will learn with time. Of course feel free to go through the settings page, and read all the settings, @umbrel does a great job explaining each toggle.

Is there something specific you are noticing?
Nothing yet. I’m waiting for the BTC node to download the rest of the blockchain. I thought I would be able to set up the lighting node today but this may be a tomorrow thing.
Yeah it needs the bitcoin node 100% synced.
 Well I’m at 7.8% after 15ish minutes.
 kick back and relax.

The first 30% basically did not have any info. these go by quick.
between 30% - 70% it will get slower.
70% - 100% will basically be a crawl 🤣

This might take 1-3 days depending on your device.
 Hi TKay,
I downloaded the LND lightning node. I believe I need to fund it with some BTC and open a channel. How much BTC should I allocate to the node and what channel should I open?
That is awesome! Please make sure you wrote down your seed phrase and have everything secure.

You are correct, first thing is to fund the on-chain wallet. This depends on what is your goal of this wallet?

If you just need a wallet, for small purchases i think 500k-2m is a reasonable. just remember that you need to have a little bit more in the on-chain wallet than you intend to have in the lightning channel.

If you use Telegram, I suggest you find Nodstrich @The Nodestrich ♾️ and join. I can help you there and many others can provide even better insights.

Thanks. I downloaded Telegram and sent a request to join The Nodestrich group.
 Well I’m at 7.8% after 15ish minutes. 😝
 Thank you
