I’ve been off Twitter and all social media except for Nostr for a month now, and the results are hard to argue with.
I’ve started reading real books again (4 this month) and have noticed both my patience and attention increase noticeably. I also feel less angry and anxiety daily, along with being committed to my workout routine.
I found that Nostr has met my social media needs, most importantly, my own ability to self-limit with it. Nostr is a bit ‘boring’ compared to traditional social media because ITS NOT TRYING TO KILL YOU!!!
Controlling your own data isn’t nearly as important in terms of ownership, as it is about allowing that information to be used against you. All of your most intimate thoughts and feelings are data mining by massive corporations specifically to find emotional triggers for you, so they can sell you shit, or force thoughts on to you.
Fuck these people that run these companies that farm our emotions to sell us shit, and to work with corrupt government to censor our speech, sell out dissidents, and destroy our internet.
We are much, much, much more powerful than they will ever be because we don’t need force, corrosion, or permission to run these systems of social connections that they cannot destroy.
My month of social media detox has really lifted the veil from the hate industry complex that are all social media companies today. Stop prostitution your content, thoughts and powers to these shitty companies that enrich the scum of the earth, and empower illegal, unconstitutional and immoral government agencies from their dragnet surveillance.
I’ll make one last tweet explaining this and then nuking my account in the next few weeks. Then I’ll be Nostr only.

Same! I just closed my Twitter/X account on Friday. I quit Facebook and Instagram over a month ago. Yes, Nostr is “boring” but I’m okay with that for the reasons you listed. Also, I think as more normies get wise to what’s really going on, they’ll see the light switch to Nostr as well.

No… and I only say that because all of the books were historical and all covered aspects of genocides that I didn’t know much about. So it was quite depressing in that respect.
Nice. It really does feel better and vastly improves one's life not being manipulated by centralized platforms. One of the best things you can do is actively order your world in such a way that you can thrive for your own benefit, instead of that of some puppet master.

Great to hear your experience. I'm having similar effects swapping Nostr for Twitter. I don't know if I'll be 100% Nostr-only from now on, but at least day-to-day I'm scrolling Nostr, not twitter.

Three days ago I decided to go on a dopamine detox. No X, YouTube (unless it's used for learning). It is to be replaced with reading, writing, creating for Nostr or spend time with loved ones.

Large media studies people's desires, feeds desires through algorithms and controls people's daily emotions. It makes people addicted and consumes a lot of people's energy on some hot spots that are meaningless to our lives. We are not using these media tools, we are being enslaved by them. We should let AI serve us. But once large technology companies master the best AI technology, they will make AI more traceless to make people fall into the gentle land of algorithms. Until everyone's emotions and attention are drained. Because the advertising business model requires more attention from people, the more attention they pay, the more ads they can buy.

I understand why you don't like Twitter, I have always been allergic to it. Every time I followed a link to a Twitter page and read a few extra replies, I got the emotional equivalent of hives and nausea. Since these links to Twitter post now only expose the single post made by someone, it's much better! But what I don't get, yet, is what Nostr is supposed to be good for. I don't feel like I can search for Nostr content to educate myself, nor can I get my questions exposed to the right persons so they can answer them, nor can I get exposed to questions by others which I might be able to answer. It might just be a matter of time until I find a reason, but so far it often feels like a waste of time to scroll around Nostr, just because I like Freedom Tech.

As someone who is fairly new here like yourself, less than a month of consistent use of Nostr.
Here what I found:
1.) You need to make an effort to find the content, people and tribe that you want to connect with. For starters, explore the hashtag which every Nostr client has it.

3.) Nostr is new and so does its clients. Therefore, take your time and be patient with it. Importantly, you are thr algorithm. It means you choose which client suits your needs. You may prefer a client that has algorithm like the centralised platforms that feeds onto your attention (luckily this is not available yet but it does not mean technically impossible!) or you could choose clients that are less evasive on your attention, read notes in chronological order or by hashtags or by topics. The topic categories is getting better.
4.) Lastly, if you have questions, I find that using #asknostr is very helpful. A lot of people respond to questions through it because I used it a lot.

Since our notes on #Nostr are opened to public, they can still harvest information out of it. At least they cannot censor my thoughs and hopefully DMs will be kept private and E2EE.
They can see our data, but we aren't on their platform. So it can't be used to manipulate what you see, the behaviors they want you to take, or to change you feed to manipulate your view of reality to their benefit.
It's a *very* different proposition from simply being able to see something, vs having total control over what gets in front of you and when it does.

Good vibes after reading this. It is mind blowing how the socials are just tools to get data to feed the AIs and in turn profits. Everything you said I have experienced myself as well. Nuking a large social account has always been matched within the fear of leaving other vulnerable ones behind. We need ways to bring those who don’t into the fold.
I join NOSTR a few months ago but didnt use it much because I thought everything is fine. Not until found of Telegraphy got caught for not censoring his platform. I forced myself to stay in NOSTR now until I got the habit to check on my NOSTR first before everthing else. 🥰

Eric, I have also been off for around a month or so and I totally agree it has really helped my mental health with X specifically. I am loving #nostr, loving the community and the #bitcoin content on it as well.
Never realized how bad the psyops on X were until you step away from it for a while. Typically, do that leading up to a presidential election anyways, but not going back.

Have you tried no data connection on mobile?
I think the best way to detox is to get a smart watch with a data connection and just use that instead of your phone. You can do all the phone things but you cant use social media or the web. It’s kind of like having a flip phone.
Sometimes I leave my phone at home, and just use my watch. I can get my insurance card, I can pay for things, I can text, I can listen to music and podcasts

More of a LineageOS guy myself, but my daily driver is an iPhone now.. Pixel 6 kept overheating even tho I degoogled it
I couldn't agree more. I did the same for 10 days, and the results were quite similar. I was WAY more productive at work, more patient, and my mood was so much better. It's not easy, to be honest. The craving kicks in, and you might miss out on interesting/valuable things, but so far, I believe it's worth it.
i did the same thing but didn't call it "social media detox" i called it "dopamine fasting"
but it worked the same - less angry, more focused and motivated.
i only do it when i feel i am getting off track in the real world though, then once i feel i'm back on track i get back on X.
Now that's what I call a glow-up! Nostr might be "boring," but at least it’s not a digital hellscape designed to fry your brain.

Inspiring words. Have to find my way within nostr a bit more first before leaving X, but can definitely see this happening for me too.
The other thing to mention is, the average quality of posting on X these days is very poor. I created a normie outreach account with good intentions. But I ended up interacting regularly with content that was so bad that I couldn't bear it and I had to rethink things. Unless you know specifically who you want to engage with, and no doubt there are some quality accounts still, you will come across the average content, which is extremely low effort and low information.
The other obvious problem is all the fake people. The site is absolutely overrun with fake accounts now. Sometimes you will see different accounts posting the same thing with a few hours gap between. A side effect of the AI revolution is that the internet is now spammed with fake people. And as it becomes harder to distinguish between real humans and bots, it becomes less justifiable to use the platforms that are overrun with the latter. Not least because sorting fact from fiction even in identity becomes that much harder. Of course, the news is all fake now, so you're not missing much there.

I am about to do the same. Especially lately, I have the feeling that Twitter becomes more of a weird addiction and less of an information source (used to be great for this). The hours I spend there are becoming less productive, and more of a sort of useless entertainment.
Who knows how they f*ck with your brain in ways we not even understand. In theory the algorithm could even be set to maintain a perfect 50/50 divide on every subject to keep us fighting each other (a paranoid thought I had recently).
For information, #Nostr is a great substitute to Twitter. For the addiction it's not, which is a good thing!
