 Falcon 9 program grounded as FCC, SpaceX investigate launch failure
==========

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket was grounded after a failed satellite mission in California. The rocket experienced an issue during the launch of 20 Starlink satellites, causing them to be deployed into a lower than desirable orbit. The missions are halted as the FCC and SpaceX investigate. SpaceX found that the upper stage of the booster suffered a "liquid oxygen depletion." The company is trying to bring 10 of the 20 satellites up to target orbit using their ion thrusters. The remaining satellites will likely burn up in the Earth's atmosphere. Falcon 9 has completed over 350 missions since its debut in 2010. It experienced one catastrophic failure in 2015 and another explosion in 2016. The recent failure puts SpaceX up against the clock as it is scheduled to run two more crewed missions in the next couple of months. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said they are updating satellite software to run the ion thrusters at their equivalent of warp 9. SpaceX likely won't reach the target date for the upcoming missions, but they are confident in resolving the issue quickly. The Falcon 9 rocket was also slated to launch a vital resupply mission to the ISS next month. NASA is working with SpaceX to understand the issue and ensure crew safety. The failure is a setback for Falcon 9, which has had a stellar record since its debut.

 Rights group: China imprisons more than 449,000 Uyghurs in Xinjiang
==========

China currently imprisons more than 449,000 Uyghurs in Xinjiang, about one in 17, according to a report by the Uyghur Human Rights Project. The report also estimates that 1 in 26 Uyghurs and non-Han people in Xinjiang were incarcerated in 2022. The ethnic minority in the Uyghur Region accounts for 34% of China's estimated prison population. Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised concerns about human rights abuses in Xinjiang during his trip to China, but Beijing criticized him for interfering in domestic affairs. The State Department's 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices documented genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang. The report also highlighted harsh conditions in penal institutions. The Uyghur Human Rights Project director stated that the prison system benefits the Chinese economy, as prisoners work in factories near prisons. The report also mentions cases of Uyghurs being imprisoned for reading the Quran. Chinese Muslim community leader Ma Ju stated that the U.S. has exhausted its efforts in addressing Uyghur human rights. The report concludes that China's oppression of the Uyghur minority group continues.

 IMF sounds alarm on U.S. debt, warning 'something will have to give' - UPI.com
==========

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned the United States that its rampant spending and growing national debt are not sustainable and could threaten the global economy. The IMF's latest report states that the U.S. national debt and fiscal deficit could lead to sky-high inflation levels. The U.S. federal budget deficit grew from $1.4 trillion in fiscal 2022 to $1.7 trillion last year, and the debt is projected to exceed $45.7 trillion within a decade. Despite inflation and growing debt, the IMF praised U.S. economic growth, projecting a 2.7% growth rate for this year. The Biden administration blames the country's debt on former President Trump's tax cuts. The IMF warns that the U.S. fiscal stance is out of line with long-term fiscal sustainability and raises short-term risks to the disinflation process and longer-term fiscal and financial stability risks for the global economy. The IMF calls for a cautious and gradual approach to easing by the Federal Reserve.

 White House orders NASA to develop lunar time standard for celestial bodies
==========

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has directed NASA to develop a unified time standard, called Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC), for the moon and other celestial bodies. The LTC will be tied to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and will enable cislunar operations. NASA is expected to deliver a strategy to implement the LTC by December 31, 2026, in coordination with the state, commerce, defense, and transportation departments. The new time system must be accurate enough to support precision navigation and science, resilient in the event of lost contact with Earth, and scalable to environments beyond the Earth-moon system. The implementation of new time standards is necessary to address Gravitational Time Dilation, which affects the passage of time under different gravitational conditions. Time dilation is crucial for future space travel to other celestial bodies to ensure coordination with mission controllers on Earth. The development of celestial time standards is seen as important for safety and accuracy as NASA, private companies, and space agencies around the world launch missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

 U.N.: Immediate action is need to end Haiti's 'cataclysmic situation' - UPI.com
==========

Immediate action is needed to combat the "cataclysmic situation" in Haiti caused by rampant gang violence, according to a new report from the United Nations' human rights office. The report states that gang violence is the "main driver of human rights abuses and violations" in Haiti and calls for the urgent deployment of a multinational security support mission to bolster the Haitian National Police force and re-establish security. The report also documents how criminal organizations recruit children into their ranks and use sexual violence to brutalize, punish, and control their victims. Violence in Haiti has escalated since President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in July 2021, creating a political vacuum. In 2023, at least 4,451 people were killed and nearly 2,000 more were kidnapped due to gang violence. The report highlights the recruitment of children into gangs as a critical problem, with male children used as lookouts and female children forced into exploitative sexual relations with gang members. Gangs also use sexual violence as a tool to spread fear and as a punishment. The report calls for dialogue leading to free and fair elections in Haiti and states that corruption has allowed the illicit trafficking of weapons and ammunition into the country. Other human rights violations attributed to gang violence include the international displacement of over 313,900 people. The report concludes that immediate action is necessary to address the deteriorating security situation in Haiti and create conditions for free and fair elections.

 Though U.S. economy shows signs of strength, poll shows third of Americans rate it as poor - UPI.com

A Gallup Poll shows that while the U.S. economy is showing signs of strength, a third of Americans still rate it as poor. The poll reveals that 30% of respondents say the U.S. economy is good, 30% call it fair, and 39% view it as poor. However, actual statistics indicate a strong economy with positive GDP growth, low unemployment rates, and job creation. The U.S. economy added 275,000 jobs in February, and unemployment was at 3.9%. Gallup's Economic Confidence Index was at -20 in March, an improvement from the -50 measured last fall. The poll also shows that perception of the economy is heavily influenced by political affiliation, with Democrats rating it positively, independents rating it negatively, and Republicans having an overwhelmingly negative view.

 U.S. markets fall after Powell says interest rates will likely remain unchanged beyond March - UPI.com
==========

U.S. markets closed lower and treasury yields surged following comments from Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell, who indicated that the central bank wasn't likely to lower interest rates anytime soon. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 421.74 points, or 1.09%, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.82% and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.98%. The 10-year Treasury yield opened up by 5 basis points to 4.081% on Monday, while the 2-year Treasury yield went up by more than 6 basis points to 4.435%. Powell noted that the first cut of the year was unlikely to occur when the Federal Reserve Board meets again in March. Powell clarified his economic outlook days after the central bank maintained interest rates between 5.25% and 5.5% for the fourth consecutive time, even as inflation had fallen to nearly 3% since the end of the global pandemic. Powell sought to temper expectations as some economists had predicted the Fed could potentially issue five rate reductions throughout 2024. Powell warned that interest rate cuts would be more gradual than what economists had predicted. Last week, the bond market was on the decline but jolted upward a day after Powell emphasized that the nation's central bank was concerned about inflation regaining steam if the body moved too hastily to lower interest. Investors remained wary about the persistently elevated interest rates despite signs of a strengthening economy, including an expanding labor market.
