U.S. job openings in July were reported at 7.7 million, a three and a half year low, and significantly below Dow Jones economists' expectations; openings decreased by 1.1 million from July 2023; job openings rate was 4.6%; notable decreases included 187,000 in health care and social assistance, 101,000 in state and local government, and 88,000 in transportation, warehousing, and utilities; layoffs increased to 1.7 million from 1.5 million in June; 5.5 million hires and 5.4 million separations were reported; July saw the creation of 114,000 jobs, with an unemployment rate of 4.3%, the highest since the pandemic; the Federal Reserve may consider cutting interest rates in September; the South had the most job openings at 3.4 million, while the Northeast had the least at 1.4 million; June job openings were revised down to 7.9 million.
