@134318c2 i remembre story of real sleezy judge sending minors to his friend's private prison on really trivial infractions and getting gifts for years. he only got caught cuz something was fishy about his taxes.
sheesh.
@134318c2 ok but... if my contention that science is a property of COMMUNITY then it's gotta be more than one kid. harder to write a story about. people like to read stories focused on individuals.
reminds me of the story of the birth of israel (Exodus to ...) focused on Moses and a wild god, but in reality probly a subtle development in a society as a whole, but people don't know how to tell THAT kind of story!
@134318c2@5d5dab61
i'm sure there is some beautiful math in there.
it is also very hard. i've learned some wacky math. never been able to get very far in statistics.
hard to find a class or book that does it justice.
and all that reject the null hypothesis and roundabout double negative way of looking at things....WHY? makes my head swim.
@134318c2@5d5dab61
well statistics as taught in colleges.
i had to help someone taking a fairly sophisticated statistics class for i dont remember what major, at columbia u.
so many recipes. when do you use which recipe for what?
who knows? how do they function? who knows?
also.. i now have few enough decades ahead of me that i will probly never be able to convince myself if most statistics makes sense.
i'm still think it's just a way to get rid of th INTERESTING patterns
@134318c2 to this day... the vast majority of kids taking calculus aren't expected to question, wonder, understand... either. it was the first math class that bored me. so MANY machines to learn.
i did my questioning outside of math class context.
@b4c50e1b@9f023162 the bigger nuisance is to test whether single particles attract each other with gravity (as they do with electromagnetic force), but without such a test, i am deeply disturbed by our ignorance about such a seemingly basic thing. WHAT IS GRAVITY. WHY SO DIFFERENT THAN EM?
90mg is still 10^22 particles. is gravity some kind of emergent property of LOTS of particles?
@b4c50e1b well that's a first step. now: does antimatter MAKE gravitational fields just like matter does? i guess if energy can, so does anitmatter? still should test. will need several grams of antihydrogen to test that i think.
@5864a332 ok so this can produce sharper images and if it can collect more light can it see DIMMER further away objects than jwst? but jwst can see IR wavelens blocked by atmosphere, so are those wavelens better for seeing the older dimmer (redder) galaxies?
