Crunch time has arrived. The rain hit last night so yesterday I had a ton to get done. The lumber logs are all stacked and covered, rounds under the wood cover, shed roof covered, tools put away, lots of misc things found their homes, then I dug 82 pounds of potatoes from 2.3 rows. I still have 6 rows to dig which should put me over 1000 lbs of spuds this year.

I am SO SORE after the lumber and firewood cutting trip yesterday. It took 2 hrs drive each way, an hour and a half of cutting, and an hour and a half loading but I have a full load of 12+ foot logs for lumber and a full tree in rounds to cure for firewood.
Hardest drive I can remember in years as the trailer was way too tail heavy so I was fighting it fishtailing the whole drive home. 55mph max was all it could handle and I know there was some pissed off people who had to go around me on the highway.

I think I have enough pine needles to cover the garlic garden this year. After raking the old road and some of the hillside I had almost too much for the truck and trailer. Last year I just filled the truck bed but with 4 times as much garlic I'll be growing htis year I need the extra. Rain is inbound so I wanted it all gathered prior, save my back some abuse without the water weight to lift.
Was going to go get lumber wood tomorrow but it will be raining in the mountains so I am going today.

It seems a perfect fit for the low power devices and would be really nice to have a BBS available without phoneline or internet. There is a ton of old BBS software still floating around I just can't seem to find any specific esp32 builds, and I'm not exactly good at programming. Maybe one of the Linux versions could be ported over?
Found a wasp nest at eye level yesterday morning but it is long empty, so I have it in the house to save. I got a bit more done on the stump as I had to cut another vertical cross cut to reduce the size of the chunks I have to cut out. Got a bit of shooting time and threw some lead at the hillside for the first time in a while. In the evening my new wireless tracker #LORA arrived and I got it quickly setup on #Meshtastic. I have plans on setting a number of the LORA devices up in my local region.

After my predawn grain run yesterday morning and a second trip to town mid day I was able to get the fence swapped out in the yard and the dog christened it first thing. While in town I got a pair of partial #ISS #SSTV images decoded as the ISS went overhead and am trying for more as long as it is running. Today my new wireless tracker gets here so I will have the 3rd node in my #mesh net going.

The turkeys and chickens finally found their way to the upper property yesterday and have done a number on the layers of pine needles coating the entire pen. I have well more than enough to haul down to cover the garlic garden for winter but I will need tto use the old bed liner as the sled to lower down the 90 foot hillside. Should be interesting.

I just got my pair setup properly again this morning. The Heltec Lora v3 is pretty cheap and I've gotten a 4 mile connection between them. I'm looking at more so I can setup one on a sensor for my packages box to alert when something has arrived and one as a base node.

The greenhouse is now harvested thanks to the lying weather forecast saying 25F overnight. Regardless I got it all in the house and cooler so now I can work on pulling all the plants and getting it ready for winter. I have to get grain spread in it this year so need it down to soil sooner than later. If only my body would stop the muscle and joint pain I could get this stuff done faster.

The #freezedryer finished batch 95 yesterday morning and the onion tops came out delectable, the boys started devouring them once home from school. I worked around the gardens during the day but today will be the real crunch with 25F tonight. I get the fireplace parts today but likely won't be able to get the work done in time... At least we have central heat to cover until then.

Thanks to the muscle relaxers I was able to sleep so yesterday was a bit better. The PDC grand prix is on this week so I have the matches on during the day. Despite my need to rest my body I still had to get something done for the day. I'd been meaning to move it for months so the treadmill finally got shifted to the other studio.
In the late afternoon I began the process of collecting hte fir pitch from the stump I am removing. There are patches a 1/2 inch thick! I'm scraping oodles of it off and am going to save it in a big batch to melt down. Fir pitch has for eons been used for an innumerable variety of uses but was usurped by the manufacturing industry. No point just burning it in the firepit, at least not what I can collect.

Deer will, most rodents, maybe the wandering goat?. Always good to cover young tree trunks with wraps or even loose pvc if pests have access. You could treat it like a grafting point and wrap the damaged areas.
Oopfh this stump is a pain in the ass. Huge, old, and now partially removed. I have had to chunk it out since it is a foot wider than the length of my saw bar. I took the tree down 5 years ago and am now finally removing the rest. Talk about a sore back though... The amount of sawing I did on the stump was easily as much as the entire tree I cut up and brought home. Now I have sharped ALL my chains so I can get the rest removed.

Holy balls! That was quite the few days out in the forest getting #firewood, #camping, #hiking, #caving, and #exploring with my oldest best friend. We dove into some amazing caves in the bottom of the canyon, found more rocks, cleared trails, then cut loads of firewood. Yesterday dawned red so I knew it was time to cut wood and head for home. I drove home into a solid rain storm but it stopped early enough for me to get the truck unloaded.
While splitting wood J found and incredible pair of spiders squished in the wood. The pic is towards the bottom of the slew of pics. No telling how old they are.

After my chiro appointment yesterday which really helped my soreness I got the yard cleaned up around the wood cover. With the load of wood I will be bringing home this weekend I needed it cleared and ready. I've had the images in my head of the wood cover for over a decade but never took the time to build it so to have it coming together like this and looking as good as it does makes me quite pleased.
Before bed I had a frog vistor next to my computer that must have come in with the house plants from the greenhouse. It is now in the basement where it will have water, bugs, and stay consistent temperature as long as it hangs out down there.

It's the end of the growing season for sure with the freezing temps setting in more now. I got a bunch of smaller tasks done over the day and mid afternoon popped open the bee hive to find they had not moved into the upper super. I pulled it and put it in storage after the bees had moved back in the hive. I hoping the 2 full supers will be enough for them for winter.

That was one of the most slow 2 hours long awful lines EVER! BUT it was for #GARLIC! We went to the "Taste of Garlic" festival at the Snow Valley Garlic farm in Priest River Idaho yesterday and I came home with 6 new types to plant. By then end of October I will have 13 varieties in the ground. Next time we will pre-order so no waiting in line...
While I waited in line a feeble old woman on oxygen died near the east end of the vendors but was brought back and life flight landed and took her most likely to Spokane. We got the full run down as the woman in line in front of us was a paramedic and went to try and help.

I'm going to have a few more hard neck than soft this year but I know they should all do well on my farm given I got them from a place north of us. The Inchelium was discovered on the Colville reservation about 40 miles due west of our farm, I love having a true local type growing.
After my predawn grain run yesterday I had the "pleasure" of an uncomfortable conversation with our youngest's principal... Lessons are being learned.
Not long later I got an amazing encounter with my resident Kestrel as it landed on a mouse about 15 feet from me then sat on the fence to let me get pictures of it before flying off. Birds of prey are all so awesome!
The wood storage area is really coming together now. It looks badass at night with the lighting and will look even better once I get everything cleared out in front of it. The butcher equipment has its place now as do the axes and mauls. The cardboard section got filled but now it's not piled everywhere.

The greenhouse got a stick through it from the wind storm but that was the worst damage I could find yesterday. I got the wood cover roof on and fixed in place, the last bits to do on the cover are on the tree end by the gear shed. It was nice and bright last night with the lights on and will be so much nicer this Winter. Still more work to do on the structure but it can rain now all it wants.

The wood cover roof is almost fully framed. It was a long process to gather all the 2x4s from around the farm and I still need a few more to finish it off. I've only used 4 new boards so far and am trying to use up all the scrap and reclaimed wood littering the farm that I can.
Solid round of thunderstorms rolled through in the afternoon and with a big gust front knocked out the power for the evening. Thankfully we have natural gas so were still able to cook dinner. The farm is covered in tree debris now.

Rather proud of myself for the problem solving yesterday. I had to figure out a way to set the rear posts at the right depth and after a bit of rummaging I made a tool that worked perfectly. It was nifty how strong the structure became as the bracing went up. I'm getting to use up a ton of the old scrap wood I have floating around the farm and a bunch will be lining the back side. Hopefully today I get the roof built and installed.

I took down all the amaranth flowers/seed heads yesterday and ended up with a nice amount of seeds which I'm saving while the tub of heads got spread ALL around the farm. I really hope to have a forest of the stuff growing each year.
The wood cover build has begun and I got the front wall up. The post holes weren't too bad to dig but half of the rear ones I am not looking forward to with all the roots I'll have to get through. It's coming together pretty well though and today I will keep at it to hopefully have the structure in and locked solid.

First half of the winter squash got picked yesterday and we had one of the acorn squash for dinner. 5 pounds each is really nice size and enough for 2 meals for the 4 of us. I got a bunch of lights swapped out for the LED shop lights and what a difference it makes. Winter will be a good bit nicer with the increase in light. Now I get to cleanup the mess the freezes left me.

Well, Fall fell like a brick on the garden. Hit freezing overnight and thwacked the plants. Since I am not selling this year it isn't a massive blow like prior years. I'm sure there will still be a bit of growth from them but likely the end of the road for most of the squash plants. We are looking at a warm up again so eveything frozen will be mush soon.
I have my #mesh radio back working and mounted on the antenna mast. I'm still trying to learn how to utilize the mesh best but as of now both radios work. I was REALLY happy to FINALLY figure out the CLI to change the damned timezone since it isn't in the web gui.

After my work around the farm yesterday we went to the school for the #wormcharming event. It's called worm grunting, charming, calling, etc. I brought a tub of tools to try as we had no idea what would work best. Evening time is probably not the best time to try and coax worms up but it was a fun time none the less. I met one of the teachers who is a rock climber as is her husband and son so I have a contact now for potentially climbing new areas.

Well, that was a wild day yesterday. After the morning of tasks and pulling a fir tree down I was in the house for a short break when the dog came in with quills sticking out of his snout. I was really proud of him for letting me yank them all out with pliers. Our last dog got a mouth full and had to be knocked out to remove them, so this was far better. I dispatched the porcupine and the #dog is seeming just fine.

YAY ME! Got my damn S9 running again. Seriously annoying having to use an 8gb card to upgrade the firmware, every card I have is 16+. So after getting the new 8gb cards I got the firmware upgraded and the thing is back hashing now. Now I'm ready for heating the greenhouse again this winter with it.

Ended up finding the perfect pieces to make my decompression rack yesterday. The 4" posts are the right size for the supports that go under the arms and with some padding they aren't too uncomfortable for the time I am on them. Using my safety belt, carabiners, bags weighted with railroad spikes and the rack I am able to decompress my spine at anytime. Even just body weight helps my spine and hip pain. I will probably need to find somewhere inside to mount it for winter as the cold wouldn't allow for relaxing into the hang.

As Fall approaches the gardens are prooducing less but the harvests are pretty consistent considering (which makes partial sense...). I had a pair of appointments mid day yesterday which took me off the farm for a while. I have new tires on the scooter now which makes a huge difference, found myself some cbg carts at one of the local shops, gathered some of the parts for the decompression setup I am building, and moved a stack of tires from the yard, all amongst a litany of smaller tasks.
All I can say is muscle relaxers are THE SHIT!

After getting the harvests done yesterday, watching Littler win the PDC title, and the Seahawks eek out a win we all headed to the Spokane County Fair. The boys are 7 and 10 but they seem to have become disenchanted with the amusement area now they see the return with the insane prices for everything. Any "game" costs $5...
The destruction #derby was the reason we went and it didn't disappoint. The powder puff derby had the women hitting really hard and the fire department ended up having to use the jaws of life to cut the door open on one. She luckily was okay and walked away. Such fun watching and feeling the roar and crunches of the derby.

The upper garden is now no more. It was time to remove it and bring all the materials back down to the farm. It was a good run which saw a couple tons of produce come out of the 20x80 area with 100 growing spots. Largely the pumpkin patch it gave me some good years of production.
Went to try and fly but the winds were just all wrong. Tested the scooter and it mostly worked, just needs better climbing torque. The sudden flight over the handlebars and subsequent impact with the ground were a bit rough of a way to finish the test but the blood soon stopped.

I've taken to audiobooks far more than reading as I can still work while listening. I may not get as much of the content as if I was reading but it is far more than not. But I generally am listening to non-fiction, like your book.
The upper garden grew more grasses and weeds than produce. It's my own fault for not weeding early but hey, at least the sheep get hay. It was a battle to get it all to fit in my truck but the sheep and alpaca were deleriously happy at the mass piles suddenly dumped in their pen. The itch the grass caused was awful and I had to deal with it quick but it mellowed after the Benadryl. I will be tearing the garden dowwn fully so I can use the posts for the wood cover.

After spending my morning yesterday getting my scooter working great, essentially resurrecting a 15 year old machine, I got more cleanup done around the farm. It was late in the afternoon when the real work happened. 5 of our turkeys had gotten "lost" across the creek for a month or so and it was finally time to bring them home. WHAT A SHIT SHOW, literally for J... But they are back and they slept in the coop again last night. Shit head birds.
