It’s not a big commercial conference, it’s non profit and we’ll be lucky if we break even 😅
It’s focused on the locals to get to know and use Bitcoin and Nostr and for our foreign guests to get to know Suriname.
So it’s 3 days of mixed events all over the country, including an Amazon rainforest adventure, a food festival, an edm/music festival where we expect at least 1500 attendees at Utopia event center. They’ll be using Boltcards to purchase at all 21 vendors.
A ‘conference’ part at Royal Torarica where speakers speak about the basics and topics that are relevant for the locals to learn more about Nostr and Bitcoin. Where we expect 450 registered attendees.
The event is free for locals and the tickets foreign visitors buy covers expenses for their trip to the rainforest and some extra side events especially for them.
Today we had a BBQ at the education center and the vibe is chill, hopeful, there’s a lot of fun and laughter and it’s just amazing to see everyone together.
Though we didn’t get any support from the Nostr community, I hope with what you see over the next few days, you’ll understand the impact of what we’re doing here and will.
Love you guys 🫶🏽
Aarthi from Amazon Conservation Team is there representing Su 🇸🇷
We’ve been working with them for over a year now.
Give her a hug and a purple pill for me if you bump into her.
Silencing the Press, Silencing Democracy
In Suriname, the government is weaponizing defamation lawsuits, violence, and intimidation to stifle journalists and muzzle free speech. The world stays silent—perhaps we're too small for the global stage to care.
But censorship here is real, and it's growing. As media platforms like Facebook are used to suppress local news outlets, we look to decentralized solutions like Nostr as a lifeline for our democracy. Yet, despite the urgency, we’ve been met with silence from the global community.
Our largest news outlets are under attack, with pages facing deletion. Facebook has become a tool for censorship, with false reports leading to suspended pages. We haven’t received any support, but we refuse to surrender.
Freedom of speech shouldn’t depend on a platform’s whims—or a government’s threats.
Starnieuws, Suriname Herald, SUN News, ABC, Rasonic TV… they all face the same crackdown. The time to act is now.
