 Silencing the Press, Silencing Democracy

In Suriname, the government is weaponizing defamation lawsuits, violence, and intimidation to stifle journalists and muzzle free speech. The world stays silent—perhaps we're too small for the global stage to care.

But censorship here is real, and it's growing. As media platforms like Facebook are used to suppress local news outlets, we look to decentralized solutions like Nostr as a lifeline for our democracy. Yet, despite the urgency, we’ve been met with silence from the global community.

Our largest news outlets are under attack, with pages facing deletion. Facebook has become a tool for censorship, with false reports leading to suspended pages. We haven’t received any support, but we refuse to surrender.

Freedom of speech shouldn’t depend on a platform’s whims—or a government’s threats.

Starnieuws, Suriname Herald, SUN News, ABC, Rasonic TV… they all face the same crackdown. The time to act is now.

True, don’t discount X and Telegram though. They are part of the good person contingent. NOSTR is unlikely to go mainstream and mainstream is important.
For now she's cross posting I think, without her posting it here I would not know it's going on.
 L F GROW!
Maya, you know this already. Don't expect the rest of the world to care, pressure from the outside won't happen.

Mobilizing on a local level is the only way. Suriname still has a chance to be free, they deserve it.

Just follow the El Salvador playbook.
Hi @MeA_BzZz - we at Nos would be interested in speaking with you about this to see what tools are needed and how Nostr can support this type of journalism. I’ll send you a DM
Are people open to moving from Facebook to Nostr?
If the media moves, the people move
Yeah keep cross posting across platforms. We've had similar draconian measures in UK, people arrested for voicing their opinions on fb 20 months prison sentences. Stay strong Maya, keep the fire inside you lit. You will get there, Maya future President of Suriname.
