The 20- and 24-month sentences that these activists received are criminal.

I've asked a few Germans and they don't know what I'm talking about. I remember there's a German idiom that roughly translates as "roasted pigeons flying into one's mouth". Am I hallucinating?
We should all look forward to the day when we’ve decarbonized enough that fossil fuel subsidies are no longer the lever by which governments attempt to control consumer prices and inflation.

Turns out LinkedIn is also full of climate denying idiots. They’re just not anonymous.

If we’re serious about solving the climate crisis, we have to research promising climate solutions like ocean alkalinity enhancement.

Attitudes like “keep our sea chemical free” are uninformed and unhelpful.

True: Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) has failed to deliver on its promise.

Also true: CCS has captured orders of magnitude more CO₂ than CO₂ removal (CDR).

It’s unfortunate (in a sense) that while temperatures were extreme this year (warmest in the instrumental record in many places), most of the US and Europe were spared so many will feel that this level of warming is no big deal.

At [C]Worthy, we're looking for a postdoc in oceanographic modeling to work on a NOAA-funded project. We will conduct alkalinity and tracer releases in San Francisco Bay and use observations and models to examine the efficacy and efficiency of ocean alkalinity enhancement as a form of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR).

Pay is $83,000–95,000/year with lots of benefits. Please distribute to your network.

“I know how this information looks—when taken out of context, it seems bad,” Exxon CEO Darren Woods said in response to the Wall Street Journal’s inquiry about the documents that show Exxon executives strategized over how to diminish concerns about warming temperatures, and they sought to muddle scientific findings that might hurt its oil-and-gas business.

@5b4f22a8 That's an excellent question. At our research project scale, there won't be much HCl and that's Ebb's job to find a place for it. If that industry ever scaled, it's a legitimate question that they need to answer. My interest is in developing MRV to make sure that the method is safe and effective once alkalinity is added to the ocean.

We're apparently removing ~6 billion tonnes of sand a year from the marine environment.

How does this removal impact the potential addition of alkalinity to the ocean from the weathering of that sand?

Another CO₂ removal (CDR) as time machine example:

H&M, the second largest international clothing retailer, recently purchased 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ removal from Climeworks. 10,000 tonnes sounds like a lot, right, but it's a time machine that takes us back only 8 seconds. 😩

My #CDR friends on twitter got mad at me for pointing out that the four regional Direct Air Capture (#DAC) Hubs under the Inflation Reduction Act (#IRA) specify a minimum CO₂ removal capacity of 50,000 tonnes/year.

Hence, each DAC Hub is a #time #machine that takes us back only about 40 seconds a year!

It's important to point this out because some people think CDR is a replacement for #decarbonization and that can never be the case.

Nearly 70 years ago in 1953, The US #Atomic #Energy Commission published Energy in the Future where they argued that burning #fossil #fuel releases CO₂, which affects #climate & #sea #level.

They pointed out that temperature had been increasing, #glaciers were retreating, and sea level was rising, and speculated that it was due to rising atmospheric CO₂ from land use change and fossil fuel burning!

We've known for 70 years!
