The population of bank voles in our garden seems to have exploded. They’re getting fat on the seeds that birds drop from the feeder (I also suspect that they’re the reason the flowers have disappeared from some bulbs I’d planted). No doubt a sparrow hawk or the grass snake we’ve seen will disappear a few voles.

This huge plane tree is apparently one of the oldest architecturally planted trees in the world. Planted as a sapling in 1793 in a lovely little courtyard adjacent to Bath Abbey.

 A late entry for today’s #WoodlandWednesday … a throwback to October 2019, a bamboo grove near Tokyo.

Lustleigh Cleave on the east side of Dartmoor is a moss-lovers paradise.

Horsham Steps, a higgledy-piggledy jumble of mossy boulders, forms a natural footbridge over the River Bovey.

The temperate rainforest that thrives in the steep-sided valley is particularly lovely to explore on a muggy day. Branches festooned with mosses, lichens, liverworts, ferns & fungi. So quiet, like being wrapped in a warm, slightly damp, green blanket.

This has a ‘heading into another week’ vibe to me.

@559439e2 I promised to let you know if I made korvapuusti with the recipe you sent me & post pics if they turned out presentable 😁. This one did, mostly 😂. I don’t think I’ve quite got the hang of shaping them. They taste great though, even if I do say so myself! Will just have to practice making more 😋.

Damson jam! I even managed to get most of it into the jars eventually! I feel like I’ve reached an adulting milestone (once I’d cleaned the kitchen floor, walls & counter).

It’s quite tart, but that’s how I like it…good job really!

Fortunately the only random encounters in the woods were of the fungus kind.

Wondered what these are…could they be dead man’s fingers or dead moll’s fingers? Any #fungi experts?

A dip in the sea was very refreshing after a lovely walk along the coast path near East Prawle in the South Hams of Devon. Really excited to see a peregrine falcon on the cliffs. No pic unfortunately - wildflowers & a basking lizard were slightly easier subjects.

I love this bit of coastline with its little coves, mostly only accessible on foot (or by sea).

My one & only brush with fame occurred here - meeting with Kate Bush to talk about a footpath issue.

First sea swim of the year today & it was fabulous! I’m still in a bit of a funk, but it helped a lot.

September is the best time imo - the water has had all summer to warm up & the grockles have mostly gone 😉.

Beautiful roses in Rougemont gardens by the castle in #Exeter today.

Whenever I see perfect roses like these I wonder why mine are so shabby, then remember that these are carefully tended & pruned. Must try harder!

Train home massively delayed so it was a bit of a bun fight to get on when it did arrive. As people piled on, a bare-chested man charged down the aisle of the carriage, shoving people out of the way shouting ‘F*** I forgot me doughnuts, f***!’
While in Exeter I thought I’d walk up to the university for a nostalgia trip. I didn’t study here but I practically grew up here because my dad was a lecturer in the engineering department. I learnt to walk & run along the parquet floored corridors, to swim in the pool & even to drive in the carparks. Just snuck into his old building. Haven’t been here in years - it didn’t look the same, but it did smell the same & it really triggered a lot of emotions. Had a little cry.
A trip into town does mean another smudgy view from the train as it travels along the Dawlish sea wall. It’s a very calming journey.

@214f1eda it did feel quite continental in that courtyard 😊.
