Forgot to post my #SundaySong on Sunday – that's how the weekend went. This is a simple #piano and #bass cover of a song by Gin Blossoms, "As Long As It Matters." No one seems to know it, everyone seems to like it.

@b5cdaf1a The hope is that no one will hear the date, just retain the carbon neutral part. But it’ll always be greenwashing, making new cars will always have a significant impact.
@792a3c2d Yes, it may have to be through the desktop interface. Every app interacts with Mastodon differently, according to their own developers' whims, so there I can't be of help.
@a71ec350 I'll take that as a recommendation. Didn't know which to watch next. The last one we saw was "Dragonwyck," which was delightfully off the hook (and yet, pretty historically accurate!)

@b5cdaf1a I was thinking today that anyone who thinks the science isn't in on climate change should *really* not take any form of medication – climate science is based on hundreds of thousands of observations, probably millions. Pharma studies may have a few hundred observations. Environmental policy, which I did, often relied on a handful of samples for make determinations.
@55cc3e77 I know. Our company repeatedly sends us phishing attempts, which is great. But then the legitimate communications also look phishy. When they launched the cyber security training, they never notified us first – we were all just sent enrollment notifications from a third-party website. Gawd!!
New #cycling jersey – a Castelli in the Giro d'Italia's ciclamino, (the color of the points jersey, which is nuts because I'm no sprinter, but I like the color.
Last few weeks have been lighter on cycling, but I'm at about 1200 miles on the year (1998 km). and 12 miles of climbing, so it's a much better year than last, and my most miles since 2017.

Not exactly #spooky, but maybe a bit of a carnival theme fits the month? This week's #SundaySong is "She Worked Her Magic On Me," by Maura Kennedy (of The Kennedys) and B.D. Love (who was in one of my favorite bands of all time, My Sin). Both former Syracusans like me, hence the connection. Just piano and me this time.

Cloudy but warmish #autumn day here. Going north to see our kid, who's been sick with #COVID for three weeks and used up all their leave so is suffering through. Our plan was to walk to their town's farmers' market, but looking at the small number of vendors . . . gonna hit our farmers' market first just to be sure we can bring them some fresh apples!

"When Broadway Was Black" – this is an *excellent* #BlackHistory book on an absolutely transformative piece of #MusicalTheater from a century ago – the show that gave Josephine Baker her start – that is now almost forgotten. Super well-written – we had the privilege to hear the author talk about it at a local showing of "Stormy Weather." Excellent cultural history and some really intelligent observations on racial issues. #books #history #HistoryBooks

@c8fadb91 I've used Arvixe for many years for both domain registry and webhosting. Not the best for support, by far not the worst, but you can point your nameservers wherever you like. As for privacy, I've never seen any issues coming from them. I'm not a very tech person, you may have specific needs.
I had to get up, shower, shave, get dressed, and now I have to leave the house to do work somewhere else and honestly, I do *not* know how I did that for so many years. Every weekday? That's insane.
@b8f20444 I don't disagree. Cloud computing is sorta inherently evil when you can't control who has your information, and you can't keep it out of the cloud.
Anyway, posts deleted because I'm just not looking for that kind of feedback.
@b8f20444 "I love being able to see who's at my door etc." – which has nothing to do with the fact that Ring is sharing your info with police agencies. And I didn't tell anyone to do anything! Just shared the info.
Becoming increasingly dismayed with how real life friends react to what little I post on FB. Twice recently I've posted useful information, found here on Masto, regarding privacy (Ring doorbells, e.g.) or Amazon's general shittiness, and have been met with loud defenses – when I wasn't even telling people to do anything, just trying to share some information. Think my skin's getting too thin, but I expect better of rl friends.
@fd2bc569 Once I finally tasted actual maple syrup, I recognized that that corn syrup stuff is an actual crime. The color scheme in this ad does nothing to refute that realization.
This week's #SundaySong is a very low-key effort, recovering from vacation as I am. This is a song by #CrackerBand called "Kerosene Hat."

@f8da0a07@06d3112a Comin' up on my 40th anniversary, so don't believe I can agree with the last point. The first two I'll gladly concede as a) an alcoholic b) relative of a gun suicide.
@55cc3e77 I like that setup. I mostly avoid docks if I can. Most docks for motorboats that I've encountered are far, far too high for either of us to get in or out of our boats. If we can use it, on bigger water, or in boat traffic, the boat's just gonna get banged around against the dock anyway, so if I can get out, I'll pull it out.
@55cc3e77 One town where we used to live touted their new kayak dock. Great. They made it accessible – not for kayakers, but for wheelchairs. Great. That meant they put in a low railing all around that made it utterly impossible to safely launch a kayak from. I just found a safe bit of shoreline to launch from instead.
@55cc3e77 Well we started out for decades as canoeists, so to us it's natural to be able to tie up, but the reality is that it mostly gets used when I'm marshaling the boat into place for her to get into it. She can't really get into that boat from a dock. (The canoe has a painter too, but it's in the back)
"This oversight was engendered by a weak-kneed sympathy for those who loved expensive things...
"Thus did a handful of rapacious citizens come to control all that was worth controlling in America. Thus was the savage and stupid and entirely inappropriate and unnecessary and humorless American class system created. Honest, industrious, peaceful citizens were classed as bloodsuckers, if they asked to be paid a living wage...
"And they saw that praise was reserved henceforth for those who devised means of getting paid enormously for committing crimes against which no laws had been passed. Thus the American dream turned belly up, turned green bobbed to the scummy surface of cupidity unlimited, filled with gas, went bang in the noonday sun.

We were led down a forest road by the largest raven I have ever seen. Flying ahead of our car, landing in the center of the road, flying ahead again. So we assume it was a harbinger. An omen at least.
@06d3112a in the original formulation, worked just fine.
The reality us that nearly all health and medical studies are done on a frustratingly small number of people. Results are easily skewed, and nearly always biased. A single case study of a handful of people can stand for years (decades) before further analysis is done… largely because the only funding for most studies is profit-driven.
@0969237f If you get a chance, check out Forever Changes record store, just around the corner on Main Street— my friend Shawn owns it and is the best. I know he promoted some tickets for your show and said you were dope!
@878d351c Agree with all of this. I rarely get that personally invested in any of the teams or personalities, but Wiggins, Froome and Sky were just grim-death-racing-as-a-business, and it made the races SO boring to watch. There's so much more joy and mutual support in the women's peloton, and now that spirit seems to be coming into the men's side as well. And yeah, I want *everything* for Sepp, but especially whatever he wants it to be.
@55cc3e77 Timely. We've got a friend who is struggling and thought she'd had her epiphany, but it didn't last. She's in constant crisis, and can't see that what she needs to do is *stop* struggling, and just stop. She's even had some longish sobriety, but I don't think it's happening until she gets serious therapeutic help. So hard to watch.
Another day, another game whose colored squares I have to figure out how to block because really, I don't care to see a timeline filled with colored squares.
(When I first got on Mastodon, someone told me how to block the squares themselves, not just the game hashtags which not everyone uses. But I lost that filter at some point. If anyone knows how, that'd be great.)

@06d3112a Their perfect lives are often not only an illusion, but an outright lie, carefully constructed and abusively endorced. I’ll take my outsider contentment.
@b5cdaf1a Unfortunately you're not the first person I've heard say she thought her curly hair was somehow "unprofessional." I'm really sorry that constrained you; there's plenty of awful appearance restrictions but that was one I really wasn't aware of.
Yes, yes, yes, we'll use the time machine to take care of Hitler and Manson, but we've gotta make a quick side trip to deal with whoever invented the computer popup that keeps tearing your focus from doing the thing you were trying to do.

@06d3112a We did a huge downsizing when we moved down here, and there has been a whole bunch of stuff I *swore* we had cast off that somehow reappeared. Zombie goods…
@55cc3e77 I wasn't sure the weather broadcast still existed. Last time I tried it on my walkie talkies I got dead air. Will have to try again; useful in the areas without cell service.
@bc80eaf5 Thanks for putting behind a content warning. I once had a filter that blocked all these colored squares but lost it and can’t figure out how to do it again.
@b5cdaf1a I just finished re-reading Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," and ... hoo boy, is that book on point for these times. And it couldn't align more with your statement.
