But @Derek Ross, it is also correct that Nostr allows us also to have a portable digital social identity that allows us to be anyone, right?
Looking at the @saylor profile you mention and the posts that are done, I can hardly believe that this is THE Michael Saylor. Michael doesn't strike me like the kind of guy that posts generated bitcoin images all the time.
My thinking is that the followers of that profile purely comes from the fact that someone created this profile early, and managed to get enough followers to get the snowball rolling. If this is the case, the real Michael Saylor might have a hard time building a web of trust later on.
But I'm very new on Nostr, so there might have been some back and forth in the beginning when that profile was created to establish that is actually is THE Michael Saylor.
Funny enough, one of the first private messages I received after creating my profile on Nostr was from.... Michael Saylor himself! After my first surprise, I realized that fake accounts exist on Nostr 😄
Crazy... I try to picture him creating some bitcoin related images with Dall-E for a few months and sharing them on nostr. That's not the real image I have of him (pun intended).
Mmm, it looks like my quest for finding out about relays and Nostr beginners will keep me going for a bit.
I figured to #asknostr community about how it might work after some live testing myself. Only to find out that my actual questions were not being accepted on most relays. Due to long form? Due to mentioning relays? Due to having too many relays?
So I do not know what kind of reach I have with the questions (if there is any reach at all).
But better to try and fail then not to try at all...

@asknostr
I'm trying to figure out the whole relay thing.
I send a note 3 times using @primal desktop, every time connecting to different relays.
Good to know: I am a new user with 6 followers (including myself) and 192 following. This will give me probably a low WoT score, but it will be the case for many new people who come into nostr.
To check which relays accepted my notes, I used @Coracle (shout out to @hodlbod for his amazing work)
TRIAL 1 - standard primal relays
3 relays accepted my note:
- nostr.oxtr.dev
- relay.damus.io
- relay.nostr.band
The strange thing is that only relay.damus.io was in my relay list, the others were not. Not sure where they came from, unless there is a delay in (dis)connecting to relays?
I also was very surprised that relay.primal.net did not accept my note
TRIAL 2 - relays that are advised online (google search)
I connected to 13 relays in total, including nos.lol and relay.snort.social
3 relays accepted my note:
- nostr.oxtr.dev
- relay.mostr.pub
- relay.damus.io
So, all these 3 relays were in the list of 13, so basically my note got rejected by 10
TRIAL 3 - the WoT relays that are advised because of spam.
I was curious to see what would happen for a new user like me
I connected to 15 WoT relays.
The only 2 relays that accepted my note:
- nostr.oxtr.dev/
- relay.damus.io/
Both those 2 relays were not in my relay list
QUESTIONS
1) Is there indeed a delay between connecting to relays and the actual usage of relays to accept your notes? This could explain some of the relays accepting my notes while they are not in my relay list
2) Is there a way for new users to get some engagement on their notes? With a low WoT score, I think their notes are rejected by many relays. Even if they are connected to 10+ relays, it is likely that their notes are only accepted by one or two relays. What are the best 5 relays to be connected to as a new user?
3) Is there a reason that I cannot see my own posts in my primal (desktop) feed? A few days ago, I could see my own posts in my feed, but that seems to have disappeared. I assumed this had to do with relays, and this started my initial investigation.
4) What can be the reason that in primal I see 5 reactions on my earlier post, but in Coracle I see an extra reply by someone? Can this be relay - related?
A long rambling, I know, but I try to figure out how all these parts work together. Because I want to build on Nostr, without users having to understand anything about the underlying plumbing. For that to succeed, I will need to understand it myself 😉 )
Mental note: get my wallet filled up, so I can start zapping the helpful community.
I'm not quite there to run my own relay (but would love to in the future). Bookmarked your relay setup remark for future reference.
Currently, I try to figure out how Nostr works through the eyes of a 'normal user'.
And then peek behind the curtains as a new dev, just to gain some more understanding.
I now added to my list to look into the outbox model that you mention, and see what it entails.
It's an exciting learning journey.
I'm just not ready yet to onboard my friends and family, while I still struggle to get a hold of the how and what myself ;)
Thanks for taking the time to shine some light on this @Mazin
I'm still trying to take it all in.
There is indeed a big difference in experience between for example @primal and @Coracle. The thing is that you don't know what you don't know. So all felt normal at Primal for a while, but looking at my profile in Coracle, I see different messages, replies, etc.
It's a new brave world for me to get into. One step at the time.
But tips like yours definitely help!

POST 3 (last one) - Advised WoT relays (helpful community)
Relays and Web of Trust... Two things that new users don't really have a clue about (like me). I understand what they are, but I am still figuring out what the implications for 'daily use'.
So that's why I want to make comparing posts with different relays to get a feel of what's happening on that level.
I am very curious to find out how WoT relays deal with new users like me, who don't have much of a following, but do have a heap of people I follow, because of group recommendations by the primal onboarding (which I very much liked)

Question:
I am new to the whole Nostr thing, but is there a way to see / check if your posts are being seen by others?
I ask this, because since a day or two, I cannot even see my own posts after I made them. I am using the primal client on desktop.
This could be a relay thing of course, but I'm using the 'standard' ones that primal.net already connects to, plus a few others.
I know I have very little followers, but I have the feeling that I just send things 'Into the Ether'. Which allows me to use an image that might trigger some response, which in turn would show me that things are all set up correctly, and I just have to work on my exposure somehow...
Tips and advice are welcome.

Hey @ThatDudeLuke thank you so much for your reaction. I'll send out the question with the hashtag too later today.
interesting enough, it shows your reaction as replying to 'UNKNOWN'. (see screenshot)
Do you know by any change how you got my message into your feed? Was it the introductions tag, or something else?

Thank you for this tip @Svoboda!
Turns out that my messages of the last days are indeed only picked up by 1 or 2 relays. I'm pretty sure this has to do with PoW score.
I can imagine relays have tightened hard to fight the wave of spam.
But if that's the case, new users will have a hard time reaching anyone at all. Sounds like this could seriously block adoption, while the more established accounts don't even know about it, because their PoW is high enough.
Ha, while writing all this, I now see in @Coracle that my earlier note has been picked up by 6 relays, where it said 1 relay just a few minutes ago. Interesting times...
Turns out that new notifications also don't show up on primal desktop anymore. At least the pink 'point' that shows that you have new notifications.. So I completely missed your last message.
I very much appreciate the help!
I will look into the WoT relays and see if I am able to post anything there. My WoT will be very low, since I am new with very few followers, and I added a lot of people to follow from the primal onboarding part. Worst case scenario, I might have to unfollow to get anywhere.
The price of beer dropped with 50% at oktoberfest in Munich!
At least that's what friends told me who are there and are living on the bitcoin standard.

That Octoberfest in Munich is celebrated in September is always messing up my mind. But at least I understand how it is possible that having a beer there is cheaper every year, as long as you are on a bitcoin standard.

So far, this course from @pleblab seems to be the best starting point. @Super Testnet, Topher Scott and Captain Stacks are the mentors here. I am going to find out how good it really is.
