Sometimes when you generate an nsec instead of creating one in a client, the clients will not let you follow anyone, because they can't find your contact list, when you create an nsec from a client they generate a contact list where you follow yourself. If you're somewhat of a dev you can fix this, by generating a kind 3 event with your own pubkey. Or you can trial and error different clients until one let's you follow someone, try to open your own profile and see if you can follow yourself. If you need an easier option, just ditch this key and and create a new one from inside a client.
Hmm okay! I’m not a programmer unfortunately—I’ve already been engaging on this key for a while now so I’d prefer not to start over. I did my profile through Iris. What do you mean with clients in this context? Apps?

I’m using Primal and Damus—can’t seem to find any button to follow myself 🤔

Welcome to nostr where ur follower numbers won't display right but they will be there. The more relays you add to your profile the more you will see each relay is it's own feed from a site so it depends if you want to see more or not. The more relays you add to ur profil# the faster your mobile battery will drain as each request to each relay is a constant fetch. Any relay connected can delete your notes & you will have no notification of it.

It might along with everything else I said above. Yeah it has to check esch relay if followers are from there. Mine ususlly takes 1 min to update correctly when I look at my profile.
However, still not seeing who I’m following. Do I need to follow myself somehow?
No depending on ur connection it may take sometime to update it. If ur using orbot & a vpn behind that it may take longer for it to update. Mine takes 1 minute before it starts to move & tell me how many I really have. So it sits at 0 for a minute for me then starts to slowly start adding numbers takes me almost 2 minutes after to know the real number of followers
